You cannot renew your driver’s license in person in PA by simply walking into a PennDOT center, paying, and leaving with a new license. Why There’s No True Walk-In Renewal
PennDOT offers three renewal paths — online, by mail, and in person — but all three begin the same way. You submit your application and fee, PennDOT processes it, and then mails you a camera card. The camera card typically arrives within seven to ten business days after PennDOT processes your application.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Starting the Renewal: Online or by Mail
PennDOT usually sends you a renewal invitation about three months before your license expires.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Renew a Driver’s License From there, you have two ways to file.
Online is the fastest option if your renewal is straightforward. You’re eligible as long as you have no corrections or changes other than an address update. You’ll need your license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and a credit or debit card.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. By mail, you complete Form DL-143 (or the DL-60A or DL-60R that arrives with your renewal invitation) and send it with payment to the Bureau of Driver Licensing, P.O. Renewal Fees
- Standard four-year renewal: $39.50
- Four-year renewal with motorcycle (Class M) endorsement: $63.50
- Two-year renewal, age 65 or older: $27.50
- Two-year renewal with Class M, age 65 or older: $39.50

What to Bring to the Photo Center
Once your camera card arrives, bring it to any Driver License and Photo License Center along with another form of identification. If your address changed, you’ll also need proof of Pennsylvania residency. Acceptable documents include utility bills, bank statements, tax records, a lease or mortgage, a vehicle registration card, or mail that has passed through the U.S. Postal Service.6Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. If nothing at your address is in your name, you can bring someone you live with, along with their photo ID, to sign an affidavit confirming the shared address. Should You Upgrade to REAL ID at Renewal?
Since May 7, 2025, federal law requires a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.8Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If your current Pennsylvania license lacks the gold star in the upper right corner, renewal is a natural time to upgrade.
The upgrade adds a one-time $30 REAL ID fee to your renewal, bringing a standard four-year renewal to $69.50. A REAL ID requires more paperwork than a standard renewal. You need originals or certified copies of:
- One proof of identity and lawful status: a U.S. birth certificate with a raised seal, a valid U.S. passport, a certificate of citizenship, or a certificate of naturalization
- One proof of Social Security number: your Social Security card, a W-2, an SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing all nine digits
- Two proofs of Pennsylvania residency, such as utility bills, a lease, tax records, or a vehicle registration showing your name and PA address
- Proof of any legal name change, such as certified marriage certificates for each marriage, a court order, or an amended birth certificate
If you don’t fly and don’t enter federal buildings, a standard renewal is fine for everyday driving. Skipping REAL ID now just means dealing with it later.
After Your Photo Is Taken
Your permanent license is mailed to you after the photo center visit. For a REAL ID, PennDOT states delivery within 15 business days after document verification, and standard licenses generally arrive in a similar timeframe.9Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Give Yourself Enough Time
Because the process runs in two stages — application first, photo center second — cutting it close is risky. PennDOT sends renewal notices three months ahead of expiration, and between processing time and the seven-to-ten-business-day wait for a camera card, that lead time exists for a reason. Start when the invitation arrives, and you’ll have both steps done well before your license expires. Driving on a valid license matters: while an expired license is not the same as a suspension, driving on a suspended or revoked license in Pennsylvania is a summary offense carrying a $200 fine, with penalties escalating sharply for DUI-related suspensions.11Pennsylvania General Assembly.
