Can I Renew My Florida Driver’s License Online?

You can renew your Florida driver’s license online through the FLHSMV’s MyDMV Portal if your last renewal was completed in person, you hold a standard Class E license with a REAL ID gold star, you’re under 80, and your license isn’t suspended, revoked, or canceled.¹ The transaction takes about ten minutes, costs $50 total, and can be started up to 18 months before your license expires. Because Florida requires an in-person visit every other cycle, most drivers use the online option once every 16 years.

Who Qualifies for Online Renewal

The portal checks your eligibility as soon as you log in, so you’ll know quickly whether you can finish online or need to visit an office. To qualify you must meet all of the following:

You’re under 80 years old.
You hold a standard Class E (non-commercial) license.
Your license is not suspended, revoked, or canceled.
Your current license is REAL ID compliant, shown by a gold star in the upper-right corner of the card.
You’re a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Your most recent renewal was completed in person at an FLHSMV or tax collector office.

That last condition is the one that trips up the most people. Florida alternates renewal channels on purpose: your photo, signature, and vision screening from your last in-person visit carry over to the online cycle, and then the next renewal after that has to be done in person again.¹

When You Have to Go In Person Instead

Several situations rule out online renewal even if you otherwise look eligible:

Your last renewal was done online, by mail, or by phone.
You need to change your name. This requires an original or certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order verified in person.²
Your photo or signature needs to be updated.
You hold a commercial driver license.
Your card is printed with the word “TEMPORARY.”
Your current license does not have the REAL ID gold star.

Address changes are different from name changes. You can update your mailing address through the MyDMV Portal before or during the renewal, and doing so does not push you into an office visit.

What to Have Ready

Before you start, gather:

Your current Florida driver’s license number
Your date of birth
Your Social Security number, which the FLHSMV verifies during the transaction
A Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover card

Confirm that the mailing address on file is current, because your new card ships to that address.

How to Complete the Renewal

Go to the MyDMV Portal at flhsmv.gov and choose the renewal option. Enter your license number, Social Security number, and date of birth. The system pulls up your details and current address for confirmation, then moves you to payment.

The Class E renewal fee is $48.00, plus a $2.00 online processing fee, for a total of $50.00. Renewing in person at a tax collector office adds a $6.25 service charge to the same $48.00 base, so online is the cheaper route.³

Once payment clears, you’ll get an email confirmation that doubles as proof your renewal is in progress. You can print a temporary license from that email and use it right away.

When Your New Card Arrives

Your physical card arrives in the mail within two to three weeks.¹ If 30 days go by and nothing shows up, check the Driver License Check and ID Tracking System on the FLHSMV website to see whether the card was mailed and when. If the tracker shows it was sent but never reached you, you can order a replacement through the portal for $25.00.³

If Your License Has Already Expired

Florida gives you 12 months after expiration to renew without starting over with a new license application, though the FLHSMV may require you to retake written or driving exams depending on how long the license has been expired.⁴ The online system may still work for recently expired licenses if you otherwise qualify, and the portal will tell you if it doesn’t.

A late renewal adds a $15.00 delinquent fee on top of the $48.00 base.⁵ Past 12 months, the license is treated as fully lapsed and you have to apply for a new one, exams included.

Driving on a license that expired six months ago or less is a traffic infraction under Florida law.⁶ After six months the violation escalates.

REAL ID Is a Prerequisite

If your card already has the gold star, nothing changes for you. If it doesn’t, online renewal isn’t available and you need to visit an FLHSMV or tax collector office with identity documents: typically a birth certificate or valid passport, your Social Security card, and two proofs of Florida residency such as a utility bill and bank statement.¹

Federal agencies began requiring REAL ID-compliant licenses for domestic flights and entry to certain federal facilities on May 7, 2025, with full enforcement phased in by May 2027.⁷⁸

Military Members Stationed Out of State

If you’re active-duty military and eligible for online renewal, the FLHSMV recommends handling it through the portal before you deploy or relocate. If you can’t renew online, the department can issue a military extension card that keeps your driving privilege valid, renewed automatically each year, until 90 days after discharge, your return to Florida, or you obtain a license from another state. You’ll need to submit the Military Personnel and Dependents Affidavit (HSMV Form 73641) with a copy of your current orders. Extension cards may not be accepted in some countries if you’re serving overseas, so check with your unit’s legal office before relying on one as your only ID.⁹

Drivers 80 and Older Cannot Renew Online

Once you turn 80, Florida shortens your renewal cycle to six years and requires every renewal to be done in person.⁴ You’ll also need to pass a vision test at each renewal, either at the office or by submitting Vision Examination Form 72119 completed by your eye doctor.¹⁰ No written or road test is required based on age alone, but the FLHSMV can require reexamination of any driver when there’s reason to question ability.¹
