Can I Renew My Ohio Driver’s License Online?

Yes, you can renew an Ohio driver’s license online at bmvonline.dps.ohio.gov, but only if you meet every one of the ten conditions the state has set for the online process.¹ The transaction takes a few minutes and costs $30.25 for a four-year license.² The eligibility list is narrower than most drivers assume, so it pays to check yourself against it before starting an application the system will reject.

Who Qualifies for Online Renewal

Ohio law requires all of the following to be true. Miss one and you cannot use the online system:¹

Your current license was issued in person at a deputy registrar office, and the BMV has a photo on file from that visit.
Your current license is a four-year license, and you are applying for another four-year term. Eight-year licenses are not eligible.
Your license is still valid or has been expired no more than six months.
You were at least 21 when your current license was issued, and you are currently under 65.
You are a U.S. citizen and a permanent resident of Ohio.
Your license is not suspended, canceled, revoked, or restricted, and nothing else in law bars you from holding one.
You have not changed your name since your last renewal. A change of address is fine.
You do not have a medical condition that the registrar has flagged for an in-person visit.

Two groups of drivers frequently think they qualify and don’t. Commercial driver’s license holders cannot renew online at all. Neither can anyone getting a first Compliant (REAL ID) card. If you already hold a Compliant card and meet the rest of the conditions, an online renewal keeps that card type without new paperwork. If you currently hold a Standard card and want to upgrade, the first Compliant issuance has to happen in person.

What to Gather Before You Start

Have these ready:

Your current Ohio driver’s license. The system may ask you to verify details printed on the card.
Your date of birth and Social Security number, used to confirm identity.
An OH|ID account, which is the state’s single sign-on for online services. Create one at ohid.ohio.gov before you begin if you don’t already have one.³
A credit or debit card. Payment is electronic only.

You do not need a vision test for an online renewal. Ohio requires vision screening only for applicants who renew in person at a deputy registrar office.⁴

How the Online Renewal Works

Start at bmvonline.dps.ohio.gov and choose the license renewal option.⁵ Log in through your OH|ID account. Some BMV services allow guest access, but a full renewal requires the authenticated login.⁶

Once you’re in, the system verifies your identity and asks you to confirm your personal details. You will be prompted about your current address and about voter registration. Federal law requires every state license renewal to double as a voter registration opportunity, so the question shows up whether or not it is relevant to you.⁷ You can decline. The last step is entering payment and confirming the transaction.

What It Costs

The published fee for a four-year operator license renewal is $30.25.² Because online renewal is limited to four-year terms, the eight-year rate of $59.40 does not apply here. Online transactions may also carry a convenience fee set by the Department of Public Safety in place of the deputy registrar service fee charged at a physical office, so budget a few dollars beyond the base amount.

After You Submit

You will get an email confirmation once the BMV approves the application. An interim document is available online that serves as temporary proof of a valid license until the physical card arrives.⁸ The card is mailed within about 10 business days. Ohio stopped issuing licenses over the counter in 2018, so even in-person renewals go out by mail.

Check your mailing address on the BMV record before you submit. A wrong address is the most common reason a card fails to arrive, and reissuing one means paying a duplicate fee. If nothing shows up within two weeks, contact the BMV.

Standard or Compliant: Decide Before You Click Renew

Since May 7, 2025, a Standard Ohio driver’s license is no longer accepted for domestic air travel or entry to certain federal facilities.⁹ If you fly and don’t carry a passport or military ID, you need a Compliant card, which is Ohio’s REAL ID and shows a star in the upper corner.

Both cards require proof of your full legal name, date of birth, legal presence, and Social Security number. A Compliant card adds one more requirement: two documents from different sources proving your Ohio street address, drawn from the BMV’s acceptable document list.⁹ A utility bill plus a bank statement would work. If you already hold a Compliant card, online renewal preserves it without re-submitting anything. If you want to switch from Standard to Compliant, that trip to a deputy registrar is unavoidable.

When You Have to Renew in Person

The online option is deliberately limited. You will need to visit a deputy registrar if any of the following apply:

You are 65 or older. The statute excludes drivers 65 and up from online renewal, and this age group is also limited to four-year licenses.¹⁰
You hold a commercial driver’s license.
You want an eight-year license. Only four-year terms can be renewed online.¹¹
You are getting your first Compliant (REAL ID) card.
Your license has been expired more than six months. At that point renewal is off the table and you must obtain a temporary permit and pass all required tests again.¹⁰
Your name has changed since your last renewal. A marriage, divorce, or court-ordered name change requires original or certified documentation in person.
The registrar has flagged a medical restriction.
Your license is suspended, canceled, or revoked. Resolve the underlying issue first.

Bring your current license to the deputy registrar if you still have it. If you can’t produce it, you’ll need full identity documentation as though applying fresh: proof of legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, Ohio residency, and legal presence.¹⁰ Expect a vision screening at the office. If you can’t pass it there, an optometrist or ophthalmologist can complete the screening within 90 days before the visit on the BMV form.⁴

What Happens If You Let It Lapse

Driving on an expired license is more than an administrative problem. Failing to display or furnish proof of a valid license when a law enforcement officer asks is an unclassified misdemeanor with a fine of up to $1,000.¹² Three or more violations within three years escalate the charge to a first-degree misdemeanor, which can carry jail time. And once you pass six months expired, the online renewal path closes: you’re back to a temporary permit and the full testing sequence. Renewing on time, even in person, is always the cheaper choice.
