Who Qualifies

The agency serves people with genuine urgency. You qualify for an appointment if you have international travel booked within 14 calendar days, or if you need a foreign visa stamped within 28 calendar days.1U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center A trip six weeks out won’t qualify. A flight to London in 10 days will.

A faster track exists for life-or-death family emergencies abroad, involving a parent, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent who has died, is dying, or is critically ill or injured. That track requires supporting documentation such as a death certificate or a hospital statement. Traveling for your own medical care doesn’t qualify.2U.S. Department of State. What Happens at the Appointment

Arrive early. You’ll clear security before reaching the agency’s floor, and lines back up during busy periods. Inside, an agent reviews your documents, conducts a brief interview, and processes payment. If everything checks out, your passport is typically printed and handed to you the same day. Sometimes the agency asks you to come back later that afternoon for pickup rather than wait on-site.

If a document is missing or fails requirements, the agent may not process your application at all. There’s no holding your place while you drive home for a birth certificate. Over-preparing pays off here more than almost anywhere else in government paperwork.

If You Can’t Get an Appointment in Detroit

When the Detroit slots are gone within your travel window, try another passport agency. There are 26 agencies and centers nationwide, and availability varies. A day trip to another city can be worth it if your travel date is firm.

The State Department also authorizes private courier and expediting companies to hand-carry applications to agencies on your behalf. They charge service fees on top of government fees but can sometimes access slots that aren’t visible to individual applicants. A list of authorized companies is available through the State Department website.1U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center
