You cannot get a same day ID in California. The DMV does not print permanent identification cards in its field offices, so applying in person gets you a temporary paper document on the spot and a permanent plastic card by mail roughly two to four weeks later.1California Department of Motor Vehicles. What You Actually Walk Out With
After you finish your application at the counter, the DMV hands you a temporary paper document. The permanent card is produced at a separate facility and mailed to the address on your application. The DMV’s published estimate is three to four weeks for an in-office or mail application, and about two weeks if you handled an eligible renewal at a DMV kiosk.2California Department of Motor Vehicles. Nothing you can do at the field office speeds this up. Paying extra is not an option. The card simply is not printed there.
What the Paper Temporary Won’t Do
The temporary works for many everyday uses, like proving your age at a retailer. It has real gaps, though, and the biggest one catches people planning trips: TSA does not accept a temporary driver’s license or identification document at airport security checkpoints.3Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have a flight coming up and no passport or other federally accepted ID, the temporary will not get you through security.
Private businesses can also refuse the paper document at their discretion. No law forces a bank, notary, or other institution to treat a temporary the same as a plastic card. If you need ID for a specific transaction on a tight schedule, call ahead and ask whether the temporary will be accepted.
How Long the Permanent Card Really Takes

- In-office or mail application: about four weeks.
- DMV kiosk, for eligible renewals only: about two weeks.
Some applicants receive their cards sooner, but the DMV does not guarantee any delivery date. If yours has not arrived within 60 days of your application, check its status through the DMV’s online tool or contact the DMV directly.1California Department of Motor Vehicles. Identification Cards
If You Need ID Sooner Than That
The most common reason people search for a same-day ID is an upcoming flight. Two things to know.
Since May 7, 2025, REAL ID enforcement is active at all TSA airport checkpoints. Travelers without a REAL ID-compliant card or another federally accepted document (like a passport) face delays and a $45 identity verification fee through TSA’s ConfirmID process.4Transportation Security Administration. If you already hold a valid U.S. passport, that solves the airport problem while you wait for the plastic card. If you do not, and your flight is inside the DMV’s processing window, there is no DMV-side workaround. Rescheduling the trip or flying with a passport are the options.
One planning point worth acting on while you are at the counter: both the standard and REAL ID versions cost the same $40 fee and use the same DMV visit. Cutting Your Time at the Counter
You cannot shorten how long the card takes to reach you, but you can shorten the visit itself. Start online through the DMV’s eDL 44 portal before you go: enter your information, upload documents, and bring the confirmation number to your appointment.5California DMV. Apply Online for a Driver License or ID Card You still sign the application in person. Scheduling an appointment through the DMV’s website also cuts wait time significantly compared to walking in.
Bring originals or certified copies of everything. The DMV needs proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two documents showing your California address, and photocopies are not accepted.1California Department of Motor Vehicles. Identification Cards If your name has changed through marriage, divorce, or court order, bring the legal document bridging your old and current names. Missing paperwork is the most common reason applications stall and require a second visit.
The Digital ID Is Not a Shortcut
California offers a mobile driver’s license through the CA DMV Wallet app on Apple and Android.6California DMV. CA DMV Wallet It is accepted at TSA checkpoints in a growing list of California airports, including LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC, and Sacramento.7California DMV. mDL Q&A
It does not solve the same-day problem. To set up the mDL you scan your physical card into the app, which means you need the permanent plastic ID first. California law also still requires a physical card during traffic stops and similar encounters with law enforcement, and the DMV recommends carrying it even when you use the app.7California DMV. mDL Q&A
The short version: plan around the mailing window. If ID is needed for something before the card arrives, use a passport where possible, confirm in advance whether the paper temporary will be accepted, and do not count on a digital option to fill the gap.
