Can You Pay Chicago Parking Tickets Online? Steps, Fees, and Boots

You can pay Chicago parking tickets online at chicago.gov/parking, the city’s official payment portal, which is open around the clock and accepts all major credit and debit cards.¹ The Department of Finance runs the system, and it handles parking, red light camera, and speed camera citations in one place.² The catch is timing: wait past the due date on the ticket and the penalties climb fast.

Paying Online Step by Step

The portal at chicago.gov/parking redirects to the Department of Finance’s payment system. You can look up what you owe using any one of three identifiers: your license plate number, your driver’s license number, or the 10-digit ticket number printed on the citation itself.³

Once your tickets load, pick the ones you want to pay and enter your card details. The system accepts all major credit and debit cards.² When the transaction goes through, you’ll get a confirmation number. Save it or print it. Your payment clears instantly on your side, but the city’s records can take three to five business days to fully update.

Don’t Pay a Ticket You Want to Fight

Paying is final. Once the payment posts, the violation is closed and you lose the right to contest it. If you think the ticket was wrong, contest it first at parkingtickets.chicago.gov using the 10-digit ticket number.⁴

You have seven days from the date the ticket was issued to file an online contest.⁵ That’s a short window, so check the ticket the day you find it.

What It Costs to Pay Late

Miss the due date printed on the ticket and the city adds a late penalty equal to the lesser of two figures: the original fine, or $250 minus the original fine.⁶ A $65 expired meter ticket essentially doubles. A $150 fire hydrant ticket picks up $100 in penalties. Either way you land near $250, which is the statutory ceiling for a single parking violation under Illinois law.⁷

If a ticket stays unpaid long enough, it goes to a collection agency, which adds a 22% collection fee on top of everything.⁸ Unpaid tickets can also block your vehicle registration renewal until you clear the balance.

When the City Can Boot Your Car

Your vehicle becomes eligible for the boot when you have either:

Three or more unpaid tickets in final determination status, at any age, or
Two unpaid tickets in final determination status that are each more than a year old.

Parking, red light, and speed camera citations all count toward those totals.⁹

If the boot goes on, you owe a $100 boot fee for a car (or $400 for trucks, semi-trailers, and trailers) on top of every unpaid ticket.⁹ Ignore the boot and the car can be towed and impounded, with daily storage fees added. Once your car has been booted or impounded, some payment plan options are no longer open to you.¹⁰

Payment Plans If You Can’t Pay in Full

The Department of Finance offers installment plans that let you spread payments over time and keep your car off the boot list while you pay. Two plans are available depending on where your tickets sit in the enforcement process.¹¹

The early payment plan is for tickets still in violation or determination status. You get up to 24 months to pay, a down payment as low as $25, no late penalties on the enrolled tickets, and those tickets won’t count toward the boot list as long as you stay current.¹⁰

The standard plan is for tickets already in final determination or seizure status. You get up to 24 months to pay, or up to 60 months if you can show financial hardship, with the same $25 minimum down. Enrolling waives the 22% collection fee.¹¹

To enroll online, you’ll need your driver’s license number, your license plate number, and an active email address.¹¹ Defaulting on a standard plan triggers a $100 fee, restores the 22% collection cost, and puts you back on the boot list. Three defaults and you lose the right to enter another standard plan.⁸

Paying by Mail or in Person

If you’d rather not pay online, two other options exist. By mail, send a check or money order payable to the City of Chicago Department of Finance to P.O. Box 6289, Chicago, IL 60680-6289. Include the ticket stub, or write the citation number and plate number on the check. Never send cash.¹²

In person, you can pay at one of four city payment centers: City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle, Room 107; 2550 W. Addison on the North Side; 2006 E. 95th St. on the South Side; and 4770 S. Kedzie Ave. on the Southwest Side.¹²

Whatever method you use, the math is the same. Pay by the due date on the ticket and you pay only the fine. Wait, and each week brings you closer to doubled penalties, collection fees, and a boot.
