You cannot play the South Carolina lottery online. State law requires every ticket to be bought in person at a licensed retailer, and lottery courier apps that operate in some other states are not authorized here. The only piece of the South Carolina Education Lottery that lives on the internet is the Players Club, where you can enter eligible scratch-off tickets you’ve already bought into second-chance drawings.
Why Online Sales Aren’t Legal in South Carolina
South Carolina law is blunt on this point: no one other than a licensed retailer can sell lottery game tickets.1South Carolina Legislature. There is no official state platform for buying tickets online, and none is under development.
The state’s broader posture on gambling makes a change unlikely in the near term. South Carolina banned video poker in 1999, doesn’t allow casinos, and hasn’t legalized sports betting. Authorizing online lottery sales would be a real policy shift, and the legislature has shown no appetite for one.
The “Online Games” Confusion
If you’ve seen the South Carolina Education Lottery use the phrase “online games,” that’s worth clearing up. In lottery terminology, an “online game” is a draw game generated by a retailer terminal connected to a central computer system. Powerball, Mega Millions, Pick 3, and Palmetto Cash 5 are all “online games” in this technical sense. The word refers to the terminal network, not the internet. You still have to walk into a store to buy the ticket.
What About Lottery Courier Apps?
Courier services like Jackpocket work by sending a real person to a real store to buy a physical ticket for you. They operate in roughly a dozen states. South Carolina isn’t one of them.
In April 2024, the South Carolina Attorney General issued an opinion on the question directly. The Education Lottery Act doesn’t expressly prohibit courier services, but it doesn’t authorize them either. The AG’s office said the call belongs to the South Carolina Lottery Commission, which has the regulatory authority to permit or block such services.2South Carolina Attorney General. Any website or app that claims to sell you a South Carolina lottery ticket online without that authorization is operating outside the legal framework. Treat those offers with skepticism.
The One Thing You Can Do Online
The South Carolina Education Lottery runs a Players Club at playersclub.sceducationlottery.com. You still have to buy the physical ticket at a store, but once you have it in hand, you can log into the Players Club, enter the ticket code, and earn entries into second-chance drawings, including drawings with prizes up to $1,000,000.3South Carolina Education Lottery. It’s not playing the lottery online in the sense most people mean when they search for the phrase. But it is free extra value on tickets you’ve already bought, and it’s the only online component the state lottery actually offers.
How to Buy Tickets in South Carolina
Tickets are sold at authorized retailers throughout the state, mostly convenience stores and grocery stores. The lottery’s official website has a retailer locator if you need to find one nearby. As of July 1, 2025, participating retailers can accept debit cards and contactless debit cards for lottery purchases, in addition to cash. Who Can Play
You have to be at least 18 years old on the day you buy the ticket.1South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code Section 59-150-210 – Sales Restrictions You don’t have to be a South Carolina resident, but the purchase has to happen inside the state. Buying a ticket for a South Carolina game from anywhere else, whether through a website, an app, or a friend crossing state lines with your money, doesn’t fit the statute.
A narrow group of people is barred from purchasing tickets or claiming prizes at all: members of the lottery board, commission officers and employees, and lottery vendor employees with access to confidential information. The ban extends to spouses, children, siblings, and parents living in the same household as any of those individuals. The Short Version
If you want to play the South Carolina lottery, you go to a store. That’s the only legal path. The lottery’s website and the Players Club give you information, retailer listings, claim forms, and second-chance entries for scratch-offs you’ve bought, but no ticket sales. Any service that claims otherwise isn’t authorized to operate in South Carolina, and until either the legislature amends the statute or the Lottery Commission clears courier services, that will stay true.
