The online system is built for renewals of private passenger cars, light trucks, and motorcycles already on Florida’s rolls. Everything else means a trip in person. Why an Online Renewal Sometimes Won’t Go Through
Even eligible renewals can stall. Unpaid tolls, outstanding fines, or an insurance verification failure will block the transaction until the underlying issue is cleared.
Insurance is the most common snag. Your Florida policy has to be active and electronically reported to the FLHSMV, with the state’s minimums of $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability.4Online Sunshine. What to Have Ready
Pull together a few things before logging in:
- Your renewal notice from the FLHSMV, which carries the Personal Identification Number (PIN) that speeds things up. Without the notice you can still look up the record by license plate or VIN.
- An active, electronically verified Florida auto insurance policy.
- A credit card, debit card, or checking account information for payment.
- A current odometer reading.
How to Renew on GoRenew
Go to the FLHSMV’s GoRenew portal at services.flhsmv.gov/virtualoffice, or use your county tax collector’s website. Enter your plate number, VIN, or PIN. The system pulls up your record.

Review the total and submit payment. What Arrives After You Renew
You should get an email confirmation immediately. The FLHSMV then mails the new registration card and validation decal to the address on file, usually within about 7 to 10 business days. If nothing shows up after 20 days, contact a local FLHSMV service center or FLHSMV Customer Service to request a replacement.

If You’re Renewing Late
Florida registration expires at the end of your birth month. Starting on the 11th day of the following month, a delinquent fee is added to the normal cost. For most passenger cars and light trucks, that fee is $10. The full schedule tied to your base registration tax:

Driving with an expired registration is a traffic infraction if it has been expired six months or less. An officer can’t issue a citation until midnight on the last day of your birth month in the year of expiration, so the birth month itself is a grace window. When You Have to Go in Person
Anyone registering a vehicle in Florida for the first time is walking into a tax collector’s office.
