You can register a car online in Florida only if you’re renewing an existing registration. First-time registrations, including cars you just bought or brought in from another state, have to be done in person at a county tax collector’s office or motor vehicle service center. Renewals take a few minutes through the state’s MyDMV Portal or the MyFlorida mobile app.
Who Can Use the Online System
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) offers online renewal through the MyDMV Portal and the MyFlorida app, with a choice of one-year or two-year terms.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The online system does not handle initial registrations. If you just bought the vehicle, moved to Florida with an out-of-state car, or otherwise have never had the car titled in your name in Florida, you’ll need to go in person. Those transactions require documents that have to be verified physically, including a VIN inspection and the original title.
What You Need Before You Start
Have these ready:
- Your Florida driver’s license number, your license plate number, or the PIN printed on the paper renewal notice mailed to you.
- Active Florida insurance the FLHSMV can verify electronically. Your policy must meet the state minimums: $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability.
- The birth date of the first registered owner, which the system uses to pull your record.
- No outstanding stops. Unpaid tickets, fines, or other holds will block your renewal, and you’ll need to clear them with the issuing court or agency first.
You don’t need a bill of sale or any title documents to renew. Those come into play only for first-time registrations.
How to Renew Online
Go to the MyDMV Portal at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov or open the MyFlorida app. Log in, pull up your vehicle record, and pick a one-year or two-year renewal.
You can pay by credit card or checking account. The MyDMV Portal charges a non-refundable $2.00 convenience fee per transaction.3Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Renew or Replace Your Registration After payment, you’ll get a confirmation and the option to email yourself a receipt. Keep it as temporary proof until your documents arrive.
What It Costs
Florida bases registration fees on vehicle weight rather than value. The base fees for a passenger car are:4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees
- Up to 2,499 pounds: $14.50
- 2,500 to 3,499 pounds: $22.50
- 3,500 pounds or more: $32.50
Most sedans and SUVs fall in the top bracket. Your total at checkout includes additional statutory fees, such as a $2.80 annual license plate replacement surcharge credited toward a $28 plate replacement every ten years, county-specific fees, and the online processing fees. A two-year renewal doubles the base fee. For a typical passenger car, the annual total usually runs about $50 to $90 once every fee is added.
After You Renew
Your new registration certificate and validation sticker arrive by mail within 7 to 10 business days.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. If nothing arrives after about 20 calendar days, contact FLHSMV customer service or visit a local service center for a lost-in-transit replacement. Keep your email confirmation with you, since Florida requires you to have a paper or electronic copy of your registration in the vehicle when you’re driving.
If You Miss Your Birthday Deadline
A delinquent fee starts on the 11th day of the month after your birth month. The amount depends on your vehicle’s base registration tax:2Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 320.07 – Expiration of Registration, Renewal Required, Penalties
- Base tax of $5 to $25: $5
- Over $25 to $50: $10
- Over $50 to $100: $15
- Over $100 to $400: $50
For most passenger cars, that’s a $10 hit on top of the regular renewal cost.
Officers generally hold off on stops for expired tags until after midnight on the last day of your birth month. After that, driving with an expired registration is a nonmoving infraction with a $30 fine, plus the delinquent fee.6The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 318.18 – Amount of Penalties If your registration was actually valid at the time of the stop and you can show proof in court, the clerk can dismiss the case for up to a $10 fee.
Past six months, it gets worse. A second or subsequent offense beyond that point becomes a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.7Florida Senate. New Residents and New Purchases
If you just moved to Florida or bought a car that needs to be titled in your name, skip the portal and go in person. New residents have 10 days from establishing residency to visit a county tax collector’s office or motor vehicle service center.9Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. New Resident – Welcome to Florida Residency triggers include starting a job in the state, enrolling children in a Florida public school, registering to vote, filing for a homestead exemption, or living in the state for more than six consecutive months.
For a car coming from another state, bring proof of identity for all owners, proof of Florida insurance, your original out-of-state title, and a completed Application for Certificate of Title (HSMV form 82040). You’ll also need a VIN verification, which can be done at the service center by a tax collector employee, a law enforcement officer, or a licensed Florida dealer.9Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. If you bought from a Florida dealer, the dealer usually handles the title and registration for you. Private-party buyers need to bring the signed title, a bill of sale, and the identity and insurance documents to the tax collector themselves. Florida does not require a safety or emissions inspection for passenger vehicles.
