You can renew your driver’s license online in Missouri, but only if you fit a narrow eligibility window set by the Department of Revenue. You must be between 21 and 49, hold a standard non-commercial Class F or Class E license or an instruction permit, be a verified U.S. citizen, have a vision exam completed within the past 12 months, have no changes to your name or address, hold a license in good standing, and not have used the online option at your last renewal. Everyone else renews in person. And if you want a REAL ID-compliant card, online won’t get you one.
Who Can Use Online Renewal
The Department of Revenue treats online renewal as an exception, not the default. You need to check every box on the list:
- You’re 21 through 49. Drivers under 21 or 50 and older must renew in person.
- You hold a Class F (standard operator) or Class E (for-hire) non-commercial license, or an instruction permit. Commercial license holders are not eligible.
- The Department of Revenue already has a verified U.S. citizenship indicator on file for you.
- You did not renew online last cycle. Online eligibility alternates.
- Nothing about your personal information has changed. Any name or address update forces an in-person visit.
- Your license is not suspended, revoked, or canceled.

The vision exam requirement is the one people miss. The exam must be complete and the results on file before you start the online process, not after.
Online Renewal Will Not Get You a REAL ID
A license renewed online cannot be REAL ID-compliant. Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, so a standard Missouri license no longer works at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights or for entry to secure federal buildings.2Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
To get a REAL ID-compliant card, you have to apply in person at a license office and bring original documents proving your identity, lawful U.S. status, Social Security number, and two proofs of Missouri residency.3Missouri Department of Revenue. A valid U.S. passport works as an alternative at TSA checkpoints. But if your license is your only federal ID, think through your travel needs before choosing the online route. What It Costs

- Class F, 6-year renewal: $25.50
- Class F, 3-year renewal: $16.50
- Class E, 6-year renewal: $33.00
- Class E, 3-year renewal: $24.00

How To Renew Online
Before you begin, have your current driver’s license number, Social Security number, date of birth, a working email address, and a credit or debit card on hand. Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express are accepted.5Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver License Resources
Go to the Department of Revenue’s MyDMV portal at mydmv.mo.gov and choose the driver license renewal option. The system asks for your identifying details and checks your eligibility against its records. If something disqualifies you, such as an alternating-cycle rule or an address change already on file, it will tell you to go in person.
Review your information carefully before you submit. Your renewed license uses the photo already on file from your last in-person visit, so there is no option to upload a new one. Submit payment, and once the transaction goes through you can print a temporary license.
Your Temporary License and Permanent Card
After you finish, you’ll get a confirmation email and can print a temporary driver’s license good for 45 days from the date of issuance. Your permanent card is produced at a single secure facility and mailed to the address on file. When Online Won’t Work
Drivers 70 and older cannot renew online. The license term drops from six years to three years at 70, and every renewal must be handled in person at a license office with a vision test.8Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Revised Statutes of Missouri, RSMo Section 302.177
If your license has already expired, Missouri gives you a six-month grace period to renew without retaking any tests, and there is no late fee. You still cannot legally drive on an expired card during that window. Let the six months lapse, and you’ll have to pass the written exam, vision test, road sign recognition test, and driving skills test at a Missouri State Highway Patrol examination station before applying for a new license.9Missouri Department of Revenue. Active duty military members and their dependents have a longer grace period, extending to 60 days after the date of honorable discharge regardless of when the license expired.9Missouri Department of Revenue. Anyone who doesn’t qualify online and isn’t covered by the military mail-in rule renews at a Department of Revenue license office. Bring documents verifying your identity, lawful status, Social Security number, and Missouri residency, and be ready to pass a vision test and a road sign recognition test.
