Who Qualifies to Test at Home

How the At-Home Test Works
The parent, not the teen, logs into AZ MVD Now at AZMVDNow.gov and launches the exam from their own account. What Still Has to Happen in Person
Passing the online test is only step one. The permit isn’t issued until the teen visits an MVD office or authorized third-party provider to:
- Complete a vision screening
- Present identity and residency documents
- Have a photo taken
- Have a parent or legal guardian sign the driver license application in front of an MVD agent
If parents share joint custody and one can’t attend, the absent parent’s notarized signature on the application may be accepted.
If You’re 18 or Older
Adults who have never held a license go through the same written test and vision screening, but the at-home option isn’t available. Schedule an appointment through AZMVDNow.gov or walk in. If You Don’t Pass
You can retake the test if you fail. Since the permit itself is valid for 12 months once issued, any retesting has to happen inside that window. If the permit expires before you upgrade, you’d need to reapply and pay the fee again.

Once the permit is issued, you can drive on public roads only when a supervising driver at least 21 years old, holding a valid Class A, B, C, or D license, is seated beside you.
