You can turn left on red in Indiana only in one situation: when you’re on a one-way street turning onto another one-way street, with traffic on the cross street flowing in the direction of your turn. The One Scenario Where It’s Legal
Two conditions have to line up. The street you’re on must be one-way, and the street you’re turning onto must also be one-way with traffic moving the direction you’re turning. Even with the geometry right, three steps come before the turn:
- Stop completely at the stop line. If there’s no line, stop before the crosswalk; if there’s no crosswalk, stop before entering the intersection.
- Yield to any traffic already in the intersection.
- Yield to any pedestrian lawfully in an adjacent crosswalk.
A posted “No Turn on Red” sign overrides all of this. If the sign is up, the turn is illegal even when the one-way-to-one-way setup exists. Local authorities can also ban turns at specific intersections within their jurisdictions.
When It’s Never Legal
Most Indiana intersections don’t qualify, and drivers get cited for assuming they do. A left on red is prohibited if you’re on a two-way street, no matter what the cross street looks like. The other common trap is applying right-on-red logic to left turns. Right turns on red are broadly allowed at Indiana intersections after a full stop. Left turns on red are not. The rules are different, and the fact that you stopped doesn’t rescue an otherwise illegal left.
Rolling stops fail the statute too. Creeping through the intersection without coming to a complete halt is exactly what officers watch for.
The Fine

Points, Insurance, and Fault
Indiana’s BMV records points against your license for traffic violations, and points stay active for two years from the conviction date. The infraction also lands on the driving record your insurer pulls at renewal. A single ticket can move your premium, and the effect stacks if other recent violations are already on file.
The bigger exposure appears if the illegal turn causes a crash. Indiana uses modified comparative fault, so your recovery in a civil claim is reduced by your share of fault and eliminated entirely if you’re found more than 50 percent responsible. A red-light violation is strong evidence of fault, which makes the $500 ceiling on the fine the smallest part of what an illegal left on red can cost.
