A Michigan Enhanced Driver’s License works for travel to Canada at land and sea crossings, and both U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Canada Border Services Agency accept it in place of a passport.1Canada Border Services Agency. Enhanced License and IDs The same card serves as your regular Michigan driver’s license and as your border document, so you carry one piece of ID instead of two. One boundary matters before anything else: the EDL is not accepted for air travel. If you fly to Canada, you need a passport. No exceptions.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs
How the EDL Works at the Border
Each EDL has a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip embedded in it. As you approach a checkpoint, the chip transmits a reference number that lets the officer pull up your information before you reach the booth, which usually means faster processing than handing over a standard license and passport.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs Michigan issues a protective sleeve with the card that blocks the chip from being read when you aren’t at a crossing.
You use the same card in both directions. The Canada Border Services Agency lists the U.S. Enhanced Driver’s License as a valid document for proving identity and citizenship on entry to Canada, and CBP accepts it on your return.1Canada Border Services Agency. Travel and Identification Documents for Entering Canada At the Canadian booth, expect questions about the purpose and length of your visit, any goods you’re bringing, and any criminal history. Carrying proof of vehicle insurance and registration is sensible because Canadian provinces require drivers to be insured.
ArriveCAN is no longer required at land crossings. Driving across with an EDL, you have no advance digital filing to complete.
Who Qualifies
Three requirements apply: you must be a U.S. citizen, a Michigan resident, and eligible for a standard Michigan driver’s license.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs That last requirement rules out anyone whose license is currently suspended, revoked, or restricted; you have to clear up the underlying issue first.
If you don’t drive, Michigan also offers an Enhanced State ID card for border crossings by land or sea, with the same citizenship and residency requirements.
How to Apply
The first-time application has to be done in person at a Michigan Secretary of State branch office. There is no online or mail option for the initial issuance. Staff review your documents and conduct a brief interview to confirm identity and citizenship.3State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID
Citizenship Documents
Bring one of the following:3State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID
- A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
- A certified birth certificate with a raised seal or stamp, issued by a U.S. government agency or territory
- A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545)
- A Certificate of Citizenship (N-560 or N-561)
- A Certificate of Naturalization (N-550, N-570, or N-578)
You’ll also need documents establishing Michigan residency, your Social Security number, and identity. A new photo is taken at the branch.
If Your Name Has Changed
If your current legal name doesn’t match the name on your citizenship document, bring official proof of the change: an original marriage certificate, a certified divorce decree, or a court order. Multiple name changes mean multiple documents to build the full chain from birth certificate to current name.3State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID Gather everything before your appointment; missing paperwork is the most common reason for a second trip.
Fees and Timing
The first-time fee is $45, twenty dollars more than a standard Michigan license.3State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID The card typically arrives in two to three weeks, though the Secretary of State advises allowing up to 45 days.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs Don’t book a Canada trip the week after you apply.
Renewals are simpler. Most can be done online, by mail, or at a self-service station as long as a new photo isn’t required, and you only need to appear in person for a new photo roughly every 12 years. The renewal fee is $38, or $45 if you renew late.3State of Michigan. A Valid EDL Is Not a Guarantee of Entry
Canadian border officers can deny entry to anyone with a criminal record, and the threshold is lower than most Americans expect. A single DUI conviction, even from years ago, can make you inadmissible because impaired driving is treated as a serious criminal offense under Canadian law.5U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Entering Canada and the United States with DUI Offenses
A conviction isn’t necessarily a permanent bar. Canada recognizes “deemed rehabilitation,” meaning you may be considered rehabilitated automatically once enough time has passed. For offenses that would be punishable in Canada by less than ten years in prison, which includes most DUIs, you’re deemed rehabilitated ten years after completing your entire sentence, including any driving prohibition or probation. You can also apply for individual rehabilitation once five years have passed since completing your sentence.6Canada.ca. Rehabilitation for Persons Who Are Inadmissible to Canada Because of Past Criminal Activity
If admissibility is a question for you, resolve it before you approach the border. Contact CBSA or consult an immigration attorney. A denial at the crossing creates a record you’d rather not have.
Crossing with Children
Children can’t get an EDL because they don’t hold a driver’s license. A child who is a U.S. citizen can use a passport or passport card at land and sea crossings, so plan for each family member’s documentation separately.
Canada strongly recommends that a parent traveling alone with a minor carry a signed consent letter from the other parent, along with a copy of the child’s birth certificate. The letter should be in English or French, signed by the non-traveling parent, and include that parent’s address, phone number, and a photocopy of their signed passport or government ID. Divorced or separated parents with shared custody should bring copies of the custody documents with the consent letter. A parent with sole custody should bring the custody decree and can sign alone. If the other parent is deceased, bring a copy of the death certificate.7Canada.ca. Minor Children Travelling to Canada
The officer may not ask. If they do and you don’t have the paperwork, the crossing can get complicated fast.
What You Can Bring Back
Declare everything you purchased or acquired in Canada. U.S. residents get an $800 duty-free personal exemption every 31 days, provided you were outside the country for at least 48 hours.8U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Customs Duty Information Anything above $800 is subject to duty, typically at a flat 4% on the excess.
Alcohol and tobacco have separate quantity limits regardless of the dollar exemption. You can bring back one liter of alcohol per person (you must be 21 or older) every 30 days. Cuban cigars are prohibited. Declare everything, even items within the exemption; failing to declare can result in fines or seizure.9U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Canada and Mexico Travel
Crossing by Boat
The EDL works at sea ports of entry, including private boat crossings between Michigan and Ontario. Boat arrivals carry their own reporting requirements separate from driving. Every boater returning to the U.S. from Canada must report their arrival to CBP.
The simplest way is the CBP ROAM app, free on the Apple App Store and Google Play, which lets you report arrival digitally. You can also call designated telephone reporting numbers. Two specialized programs offer additional convenience:10U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Pleasure Boat Reporting Requirements
- The Canadian Border Boat Landing Permit (I-68) allows recreational boaters to re-enter by phone rather than appearing at a reporting location.
- NEXUS Marine satisfies the face-to-face inspection requirement, though boaters must still phone in their arrival.
The older Small Vessel Reporting System and float plans are no longer accepted. Download ROAM before your first trip.
If You Lose Your EDL in Canada
A reported-lost card is canceled immediately and can never be used at the border again. If it happens while you’re in Canada, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, or speak with CBP at the port of entry when you arrive at the crossing to return home.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs There are protocols for getting citizens home without their primary document, but the process is longer and involves more questioning than a normal crossing.
Carry a backup. A passport card fits in a wallet and works independently as a land and sea border-crossing document, so losing your EDL becomes an inconvenience instead of a crisis. Protect the card itself too: the RFID chip can be damaged by bending, scratching, or heat, and if it fails you’ll find out at the booth. Keep the card in its protective sleeve when it’s not in use.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs
