Signing Up and Funding Your Account
Registration requires your full legal name, date of birth, current address, email, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. State law requires operators to run fraud detection and identity verification on every new account, which is why sign-up looks more like opening a bank account than downloading a game.3Michigan Legislature. What You Can and Cannot Bet On
Michigan is relatively permissive. College sports are on the board, and unlike many states, that includes individual player prop bets on college athletes. A handful of markets are off-limits under MGCB rules:6Legal Information Institute. Michigan Administrative Code R. 432.745 – Authorized and Prohibited Events
- High school sports and any event where most participants are under 18.
- Pari-mutuel horse racing, which runs through a separate regulatory system.
- Wagers on whether a specific athlete will be injured during an event.
- Casino-style games like roulette, poker, and dice — these fall under the separate internet gaming license, not sports betting.
- Events whose outcomes are already known.
Taxes on Your Winnings
Every dollar you win is taxable income, whether or not bet365 sends you a tax form.
On the federal side, the sportsbook files a Form W-2G when your winnings reach $2,000 or more and the payout is at least 300 times your wager. Above $5,000, the operator withholds 24% for federal income tax before paying you.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (Rev. January 2026) Even below the W-2G threshold, the IRS expects you to report all gambling income.
Michigan taxes gambling winnings at its flat 4.25% income tax rate. There’s no separate gambling bracket; the winnings get added to your other income on your Michigan return.
You can deduct gambling losses against gambling winnings on your federal return, but only if you itemize on Schedule A, and only up to the amount of gambling income you reported that year. Losses cannot create a net deduction against your regular income, so keep dated records of your bets, stakes, and outcomes if you plan to claim the deduction.8Internal Revenue Service. If You Need to Step Away
Michigan runs a voluntary self-exclusion program that covers every licensed online sportsbook and casino in the state, bet365 included. You can enroll for one year, five years, or life. Once you’re on the list, operators must close your accounts, cancel open bets, return your remaining balance, and stop sending you promotional material. You can apply online, in person at MGCB offices, or by emailing the MGCB’s Division of Public Licensing.
