You can walk into any NC DMV driver license office without an appointment during regular business hours, and staff will serve you until the location reaches its daily capacity.1North Carolina Department of Transportation. NCDMV Helpful Hints Appointments still exist and generally move faster, but they’re not required. The DMV spreads scheduled appointments across the whole day rather than blocking off mornings, so walk-ins get pulled in between them from open to close.
How Walk-Ins Work Now
North Carolina scrapped its old policy of reserving mornings for appointments and forcing walk-ins to wait until the afternoon. Show up whenever the office is open. Appointments can still be booked up to seven days out through the state’s SkipTheLine site, and people holding them tend to get in and out faster.1North Carolina Department of Transportation. The real constraint is capacity. Each office only handles so many people per day. Once that number is hit, walk-ins are turned away even before the posted closing time. Busy offices in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro fill up fastest. Early morning and mid-week visits give you the best odds of a short wait.
Check Wait Times Before You Leave
The NCDMV posts live wait estimates on its office locations page, showing whether each office is accepting walk-ins, running long, or already at capacity. The estimates update based on how many service stations are open, how many customers are waiting, and how long typical transactions take.2North Carolina Department of Transportation. Some offices also run a virtual queue called Q-Anywhere. Scan a QR code at the location or send a text to claim a spot in line, then wait in your car or nearby. Your phone pings when your turn is coming. The wait itself doesn’t shrink, but you’re not stuck in the lobby.
Make Sure You’re at the Right Kind of Office
North Carolina runs two separate systems, and showing up at the wrong one wastes the trip. Driver license offices are state-operated and handle anything tied to you as a driver: original licenses, renewals, REAL ID upgrades, learner’s permits, road tests, and state ID cards.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. License plate agencies are privately contracted and deal with your vehicle: title transfers, registration renewals, specialty plates, and county property tax collection. Standard private passenger registration is $46.25.4North Carolina Department of Transportation. Vehicle Title and Registration Fees If you need plates or a title, go there, not to a driver license office.
What to Bring
Walking in without the right paperwork is the fastest way to get sent home. State law requires at least two forms of ID approved by the Commissioner, with at least one showing your residential address.5North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-7 – Issuance and Renewal of Drivers Licenses For most walk-ins, especially anyone getting a REAL ID, the NCDMV wants documents in these categories:
- Identity and date of birth: one document with your full legal name, such as a certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or a REAL ID-compliant license from another state.
- Social Security number: one document showing your full name and complete SSN. A Social Security card works, and so does a W-2 or 1099 with the full number. Photocopies of Social Security cards are not accepted.
- North Carolina residency: two documents showing your current physical address. Utility bills, bank statements, a voter precinct card, a vehicle registration card, a lease, or a mortgage statement all qualify.
- Name change, if applicable: documents showing the chain from your birth name to your current name, such as a marriage certificate or court order.
Non-U.S. citizens also need one document proving lawful status.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. NC REAL ID Requirements Names, addresses, and numbers must match across every document. A single typo that doesn’t line up will get you turned away.
Proof of Insurance
Applying for or renewing a driver license (not a state ID) requires proof of liability insurance from a provider licensed in North Carolina. A DL-123 form from your insurer, an original policy binder, or an insurance card showing your name, policy number, and coverage dates all work.7North Carolina Department of Transportation. The minimum coverage went up on July 1, 2025. Your policy now needs at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $50,000 for property damage.8North Carolina Department of Insurance. Fees and Payment
A standard Class C driver license costs $6.50 per year. An eight-year license runs $52. Drivers 66 and older get a five-year license for $32.50.9North Carolina Department of Transportation. Saturday Walk-In Hours in the Summer
If weekdays don’t work, 20 driver license offices open on Saturdays for walk-in service from 8 a.m. to noon during the summer. For 2025, Saturday hours ran on 11 Saturdays between May 31 and August 23.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. Saturday services cover renewals, duplicates, address changes, REAL ID issuances, and road tests for anyone who has already passed the written exam.
These are seasonal. Outside the summer schedule, driver license offices are closed weekends. The DMV usually announces the next year’s Saturday calendar in the spring.
When You Can Skip the Office Entirely
The myNCDMV portal handles a lot without a visit: driver license renewals, duplicate licenses, vehicle registration renewals, property tax payments, duplicate registration cards, and personalized or specialty plate orders.11North Carolina Department of Transportation. MyNCDMV Online Payments
The rules on back-to-back online renewals loosened recently. A non-REAL ID license can be renewed online two times in a row. A REAL ID holder can also renew online a second consecutive time, but only if there’s been an in-person transaction with a new photo since the last renewal.12North Carolina Department of Transportation. REAL ID Has to Be Done in Person
The federal REAL ID requirement took effect May 7, 2025. To board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities, you need a REAL ID-compliant license, a valid U.S. passport, or another federally accepted ID.13Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A standard North Carolina license without the gold star in the upper corner won’t get you through airport security.
If you still need to upgrade, this is a walk-in worth doing sooner rather than later. REAL ID requires an in-person visit with the full document set. You can’t get one online.
If Your License Already Expired
North Carolina passed a moratorium that buys some drivers extra time. Under state legislation effective July 2025, Class C licenses expiring on or after July 1, 2025 remain valid for driving inside North Carolina for up to two years past the printed expiration date. Read the limits carefully. The moratorium only covers in-state driving. Other states and federal agencies aren’t required to honor it, so an expired NC license can still get you a ticket on a road trip or a rejection at TSA. It doesn’t apply to commercial licenses either, or to any license that’s been suspended, revoked, or canceled. It’s a safety net, not a reason to put off the visit.
