The Canadian bread settlement is a $500 million class-action resolution in which Loblaw Companies Ltd. and its parent, George Weston Ltd., agreed to compensate Canadians who bought packaged bread during a 15-year price-fixing arrangement. Approved claimants are receiving either $49.11 or $24.11, with payouts that began the week of May 11, 2026.
How Much You Get and When
Two payout amounts apply, depending on whether you already took part in Loblaw’s earlier gift card program:
- $49.11 if you did not accept a $25 Loblaw gift card in 2018.
- $24.11 if you did accept the $25 card, since that value is credited against your share.
- Subtract $2.00 if you asked to be paid by cheque instead of Interac e-Transfer.
Payments started rolling out the week of May 11, 2026, for claimants outside Quebec, administered by Verita. Quebec payouts, administered by Concilia, began on June 1, 2026.1CBC News. Can You Still File a Claim?
No. The claims window opened on September 11, 2025, and closed on December 12, 2025.3Toronto Star. A Timeline of Events in the Bread Price-Fixing Scandal If you didn’t submit a claim before the deadline, you aren’t eligible for a payment from this settlement.
Who Qualified
To be eligible, a claimant had to be a Canadian resident as of December 31, 2021, at least 18 years old at the time of filing, and to have bought packaged bread products for personal use between January 2001 and December 2021. The definition of packaged bread was wide, covering bagged bread, buns, rolls, bagels, naan, English muffins, wraps, pita, and tortillas.4CBC News. Bread Price-Fixing Class Action Loblaw
No receipts or proof of purchase were needed. The claim form asked for name, date of birth, address, and details of the most recent packaged bread purchase, plus a declaration about whether the claimant had received a $25 Loblaw gift card in 2018.4CBC News. Bread Price-Fixing Class Action Loblaw
Why the Money Is Being Paid
The Competition Bureau found that packaged bread prices in Canada were artificially inflated for roughly 15 years through coordinated increases involving both bread producers and major grocery retailers. Court documents filed in January 2018 placed the arrangement between 2001 and at least 2016, and the Bureau estimated it added at least $1.50 to the price of a loaf.5Government of Canada. Loblaw and George Weston discovered the conduct internally in March 2015 and self-reported it, which gave them immunity from criminal prosecution.6BNN Bloomberg. Separately, on the criminal side, Canada Bread Company Limited pleaded guilty and was fined $50 million on June 21, 2023, the largest price-fixing fine ever imposed by a Canadian court. What the $500 Million Covers
The two companies agreed to the payment on July 25, 2024. George Weston is contributing $247.5 million in cash. Loblaw is contributing $252.5 million, made up of $156.5 million in cash and $96 million credited for the value of the 2018 gift card program.9CBC News. Loblaw Bread Price Settlement10Global News. Justice Ed Morgan of the Ontario Superior Court called the settlement “excellent, fair and in the best interest of class members,” noting the court received four objections and 475 opt-outs from a class estimated at more than 20 million members.12CBC News. What’s Still Being Litigated
The $500 million resolved only the claims against Loblaw and George Weston. Other companies named in the class actions remain defendants and have denied involvement:
- Metro Inc. has denied involvement and filed a cross-claim accusing Loblaw and George Weston of conspiring to implicate it.
- Sobeys (Empire Co. Ltd.) has denied involvement and said it was falsely implicated.
- Walmart Canada has denied conspiring to fix prices or violating the Competition Act.
- Giant Tiger Stores has said it did not participate in or know about the conspiracy.
- Canada Bread remains a defendant in the civil actions despite its criminal guilty plea and has denied involvement in the broader industry-wide conspiracy beyond what it admitted criminally.
Plaintiffs’ lawyers are preparing for trial against these remaining defendants, and no trial dates had been publicly reported as of late 2025.9CBC News.
