To cancel a vehicle registration in Georgia, use the Department of Revenue’s DRIVES e-Services portal online or bring a completed Form MV-18J to your county tag office in person. There is no fee for the cancellation itself. Canceling Online Through DRIVES e-Services
The online route is the fastest. Go to the DRIVES e-Services website and sign in with either your license plate number or your VIN, plus your driver’s license number or a Letter ID from correspondence the DOR has sent you about the vehicle.2Georgia.gov. Canceling in Person at Your County Tag Office

Cancel Registration Before You Drop Insurance
Georgia requires every registered vehicle to carry minimum liability insurance, and the state tracks compliance through the Georgia Electronic Insurance Compliance System, or GEICS.4Georgia Department of Revenue. Georgia Electronic Insurance Compliance System GEICS matches VINs from insurer reports against the state’s tag and title database. When an insurer reports that a policy has ended but the vehicle is still actively registered, the system catches it automatically.
The result is a $25 lapse fee. If that fee goes unpaid for 30 days, additional penalties of up to $160 can be added on top.5Department of Revenue. Lapse or Loss of Insurance Coverage The way to avoid this entirely is to let the registration cancellation process first, and only then end your policy.
What Cancellation Means for Driving the Car
Once the registration is canceled, the vehicle cannot legally be driven on any public road in Georgia. The DOR states plainly that it is illegal to drive, or to let anyone else drive, a vehicle with a canceled, suspended, or revoked registration.1Department of Revenue. Operating an unregistered vehicle is a misdemeanor.7Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-8 – Operation of Unregistered Vehicle or Vehicle Without Current License Plate, Revalidation Decal, or County Decal Under Georgia’s general misdemeanor sentencing rules, a conviction can carry a fine of up to $1,000, up to 12 months in jail, or both.8Justia. Georgia Code 17-10-3 – Punishment for Misdemeanors Anyone who rents or loans out an unregistered vehicle faces $100 per violation, and each day the vehicle is operated counts as a separate offense.
If you’re canceling because the car is sitting unused or awaiting repairs, plan on going through reinstatement before you drive it again. If you sold the vehicle to a private buyer who will register it themselves, cancellation is the end of your obligation.
Reinstating a Canceled Registration
Reinstatement is not available online. You have to go to your county tag office in person and bring three things:1Department of Revenue. Cancellation and Reinstatement of Registration
- Payment of all ad valorem taxes and registration fines that accrued during the cancellation period.
- Proof of active Georgia motor vehicle liability insurance on the vehicle. Georgia verifies this electronically, so your insurer needs to have reported the new policy to the state database.
- Emissions inspection results, if your county requires emissions testing.
Any late renewal penalties from before the cancellation carry over. Georgia charges a 25% penalty on the license plate fee and a 10% penalty on the ad valorem tax for late renewals.9Department of Revenue. Georgia County Registration Renewal Periods Vary
Active-Duty Military Deployment
Active-duty service members who won’t have anyone driving the vehicle during deployment can cancel through DRIVES e-Services or by mailing Form MV-18J to their county tag office, in either case before ending the insurance policy.1Department of Revenue. Cancellation and Reinstatement of Registration On return, reinstatement requires the standard items plus a completed, signed, and notarized Form MV-18G (Service Member’s Affidavit for Mandatory Insurance Relief), with the certification at the bottom of that form filled out and signed by the commanding officer. That affidavit lets the DOR waive certain insurance lapse fees that would otherwise have accumulated during the deployment.
