The Carolina Vargas Uber kidnapping took place on May 8, 2020, when a Nashville-area rideshare driver was held at knifepoint by a passenger, forced to drive from Tennessee into Georgia, and escaped by jumping from her own moving SUV at roughly 55 miles per hour. Her attacker, 51-year-old Christopher Chadwick Miller of Cleveland, Tennessee, was arrested three days later at a motel in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Ride Was Not Booked Through Uber
Vargas had driven Miller once legitimately through the Uber platform earlier that week, taking him from Nashville to a Hampton Inn in Cleveland, Tennessee after he said his truck had broken down. On Friday, May 8, Miller contacted her directly to arrange a second trip back toward Nashville. An Uber spokesperson later confirmed that this second trip did not originate on the Uber platform and was not an official Uber ride.1Oxygen. The vehicle ran over her leg after she hit the pavement. She later recalled the moment: “I just remember feeling a ball of fire where the tire drove over me.”4Miami Herald. How Police Tracked Miller to Florida
Vargas had taken a photograph of Miller during their first ride and gave it to investigators. Using that photo and GPS data from Miller’s cellphone, police tracked him to a motel in Jacksonville, Florida. On Monday, May 11, 2020, officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Duval County Sheriff’s Office arrested him on felony warrants.6Fox 13 Memphis. Vargas’s Recovery
Vargas recovered at her home in Antioch, Tennessee, south of Nashville. Bruising left her initially unable to walk, and she needed a walker and a shower chair. Her mouth had been cut open in the escape, and she lost three front teeth. She had her first bone surgery for the dental injuries in late May 2020 and was walking again without assistance by then.9NewsChannel 9. The psychological aftermath was harder. Vargas described survivor’s guilt and intrusive thoughts about the attack, asking herself, “Why did I survive? What was the purpose?” She said the mental scars were more difficult than the physical injuries, and she leaned on self-talk and her family to cope.9NewsChannel 9.
