Casey Anthony’s parents are George and Cindy Anthony, a Florida couple who became public figures during the 2011 murder trial of their daughter and have remained so ever since. How They Became Part of the Case
Caylee Anthony was two years old when she was last seen on June 16, 2008, leaving her grandparents’ home with Casey.3ABC30. Earlier that same day, the couple had retrieved Casey’s abandoned Pontiac Sunfire from a tow yard. George, a former law enforcement officer, later testified that when he opened the trunk he detected a “pretty strong odor” he recognized as human decomposition.5ABC News. On one of them she told the dispatcher a line that would follow her for years: “It smells like there’s been a dead body in the damn car.” She later testified she “blurted it out” to get police to respond and considered it a figure of speech.6CBS News. George Anthony’s 2009 Suicide Attempt
About a month after the remains were identified, on the night of January 22, 2009, George was reported missing. Police tracked his cell phone to a Daytona Beach motel and found him with several bottles of medication he had taken from home. He was placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold under Florida’s Baker Act and taken to Halifax Medical Center. He later testified he had wanted “to go and be with Caylee” and would not have survived without law enforcement intervention.9NBC News. What Each Parent Said at Trial
Casey was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and providing false information to law enforcement.10Fox 35 Orlando. George on the Stand
George’s account of the smell in the trunk supported the prosecution’s forensic case. But defense attorney Jose Baez put forward a very different story in his opening: Caylee had drowned accidentally in the family pool on June 16, 2008, and George had discovered the body and helped cover up the death. Baez also accused George of sexually abusing Casey from around age eight and said the family operated under a “culture of lying and deceit.” George denied every allegation under oath and testified he had “nothing to do with the disposal of Caylee’s body.”11CBS News. He was also questioned about Krystal Holloway, who went by River Cruz and claimed to have had a roughly three-month affair with him while Caylee was missing. Holloway said George had told her Caylee’s death was “an accident that snowballed out of control.” George denied the affair and denied ever saying that, and he described Holloway as someone with a “questionable past.”12CBS News. Cindy on the Stand
Cindy’s testimony was, if anything, more startling. She told jurors it was she, not Casey, who had searched the family computer for “chloroform” in March 2008, saying she had originally searched “chlorophyll” out of concern about her dogs eating bamboo and had followed links to chloroform. Prosecutors countered with her work records, which showed her logged into her office computer at the time the home searches were made; Cindy suggested a supervisor might have filled out her time card.14CNN. She also testified that on July 16, 2008, the family pool ladder was in the “up” position, which fit the defense’s drowning theory, and that stains in the trunk of Casey’s car had been there since the family bought it.14CNN. The Split With Casey After the Verdict
Two months after the acquittal, George and Cindy sat with Dr. Phil McGraw for their first major post-verdict interview. Asked whether Casey would be welcome at their home, George answered, “Not while I was there, no.” Cindy said she hoped Casey could find happiness, get therapy, and perhaps “be a mom again” one day.17CBS News. The break widened in November 2022, when Casey appeared in the Peacock docuseries Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies and formally accused George of sexually abusing her from ages eight to twelve and of being responsible for Caylee’s death. George has never been charged in connection with any of these allegations and has continued to deny them. The 2024 Lie Detector Special
On January 4, 2024, A&E and Lifetime aired Casey Anthony’s Parents: The Lie Detector Test, in which George and Cindy underwent polygraph examinations administered by retired FBI Special Agent George Olivo. George denied the sexual abuse accusations and denied knowingly concealing Caylee’s whereabouts, saying, “No. I mean, I didn’t know where she was at.”24The Independent. In March 2025, Casey launched TikTok and Substack accounts, presenting herself as a “legal advocate” and “researcher.” In her introductory video she acknowledged her parents by name but said, “This is not about them.
