In November 2023, singer Casandra “Cassie” Ventura filed a federal lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs accusing him of rape, sex trafficking, and more than a decade of physical abuse. The Cassie lawsuit against Diddy was filed in the Southern District of New York on November 16, 2023, and settled the very next day for a reported $20 million. It didn’t end there. The complaint became the template for dozens of other civil claims, drew federal investigators to Combs, and put Ventura on the witness stand two years later in the criminal trial that sent him to prison.
What Ventura Alleged
Ventura filed just days before New York’s Adult Survivors Act closed its one-year window for time-barred civil claims involving adult sexual abuse.1NPR. At the center of the allegations were events Combs allegedly called “Freak Offs”: sexual encounters with male sex workers that he directed, filmed, and later used as leverage over her, according to the complaint. Ventura said he plied her with ecstasy, cocaine, GHB, and ketamine to keep her compliant and help her “disassociate” through the encounters.3NBC News. The complaint also alleged Combs “frequently beat Ms. Ventura savagely,” leaving her with black eyes, bruised lips, and bleeding, and that he raped her in 2018 after she tried to end the relationship, forcing his way into her home while she repeatedly said “no.” Other allegations included firearm threats, the destruction of a car belonging to rapper Kid Cudi (who had a romantic interest in Ventura), and a $50,000 payment to a hotel to obtain surveillance footage of a 2016 assault.2Courthouse News Service. The $20 Million Settlement, One Day Later
The parties settled within 24 hours of filing, on November 17, 2023, for a reported $20 million. An attorney for Combs said the settlement was “not an admission of any wrongdoing.” Ventura’s lawyers said the case was resolved “to their mutual satisfaction,” and Ventura herself said she settled “on terms that I have some level of control.”4ABC News. Before the settlement, Combs’ then-lead attorney Benjamin Brafman had called the allegations “baseless and outrageous lies” and accused Ventura of trying to extort $30 million by threatening to publish a damaging book.5The Guardian. The 2016 Hotel Video
Six months after the settlement, in May 2024, CNN published surveillance footage from the InterContinental Hotel in Century City dated March 5, 2016. The video showed Combs grabbing, shoving, dragging, and kicking Ventura in a hallway, matching an incident described in her complaint.7CNN. Sean Combs Cassie Ventura
Two days later, Combs posted an Instagram apology saying his behavior was “inexcusable” and that he took “full responsibility.” Ventura’s legal team dismissed it. How Her Suit Opened the Door for Other Accusers
Within days of Ventura’s filing, Joi Dickerson-Neal and Liza Gardner filed their own suits alleging sexual assault dating to the early 1990s. By late 2024, attorney Tony Buzbee said his firm represented more than 120 people with claims against Combs.10NPR. Some of those cases have since been dismissed on procedural grounds, including failures to comply with court orders requiring plaintiffs to reveal their identities; others remain pending.12Business Insider. The Adult Survivors Act that made Ventura’s own filing possible produced more than 2,500 lawsuits statewide before its window closed in November 2023. From Civil Complaint to Federal Indictment
On September 16, 2024, federal agents arrested Combs in Manhattan. Prosecutors in the Southern District of New York unsealed a three-count indictment the next day charging racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and transportation to engage in prostitution.14U.S. Department of Justice. The indictment alleged Combs had led a criminal enterprise from at least 2008 involving forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, obstruction of justice, and sex trafficking. Ventura’s Testimony at the Criminal Trial
The trial began in May 2025 and Ventura was the prosecution’s star witness, testifying across four days starting May 13, 2025.17ABC News. Defense attorney Anna Estevao cross-examined her over two days, presenting messages the defense argued reflected a consensual “swinger’s lifestyle” and pointing to the $20 million settlement as a motive to accuse. Ventura, in tears, told jurors: “I’d give that money back if I never had to have ‘Freak Offs.’ I would have had agency and autonomy. Others corroborated pieces of her account. Former Danity Kane member Dawn Richard testified she “frequently” saw Combs be violent with Ventura, including a 2009 incident in which she said he tried to hit Ventura with a skillet, kicked her, and dragged her upstairs by her hair.21The Guardian. Verdict, Sentence, and Appeal
The jury deliberated just over two days and returned a split verdict on July 2, 2025. Combs was found guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, one involving Ventura and one involving a witness identified as “Jane.” He was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and both counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion.24ABC News. On October 3, 2025, Judge Arun Subramanian sentenced Combs to 50 months in prison, imposed the maximum $500,000 fine, and ordered five years of supervised release, with credit for roughly 12 months already served.25CNN. Wigdor said Ventura was “pleased that he’s been found guilty and held responsible to federal crimes, something that he’s never been held responsible for in his entire life,” while acknowledging disappointment on the acquitted charges.28ABC News. Combs’ appellate team, led by Alexandra Shapiro, argued on appeal that Judge Subramanian “acted as a thirteenth juror” by sentencing based on acquitted conduct, and that the “Freak Offs” were consensual amateur pornography protected by the First Amendment.
