What Happened on July 11, 2011
Kieu, then a real estate agent, laced a meal with a sleep aid and served it to her 51-year-old estranged husband at the Garden Grove home they still shared. After he lost consciousness, she tied his arms and legs to the bed with rope and removed his clothing. When he came to, she used a 10-inch kitchen knife to cut off his penis, then dropped the severed organ into the garbage disposal and turned it on.2CBS News. Calif. Kieu herself called 911 and reported a medical emergency. Officers who arrived found the victim still tied to the bed and bleeding heavily. Kieu told them her husband “deserved it.”3Herald-Tribune. The Marriage and the Divorce
The victim was identified in court only by his first name, Glen, because of the sexual nature of the crime. The couple had no children. About two months before the attack, Glen had filed for divorce, though the pair continued to live together in his Garden Grove home.5Orange County Register. Woman Guilty in Husband’s Penis Slicing Prosecutors said the attack followed an argument tied to the divorce and that Kieu refused to accept Glen’s decision to end the marriage.
The Charges and the Trial
A grand jury indicted Kieu in January 2012 on one felony count of torture, one count of aggravated mayhem, and a sentencing enhancement for personal use of a knife.6Orange County Register. Arraignment of Woman in Penis Slicing Delayed The case went to trial before Superior Court Judge Richard F. Toohey in Santa Ana, with Deputy District Attorney John Christl prosecuting and Deputy Public Defender Frank Bittar for the defense.
Christl told the jury that the attack was driven by “vengeance, vanity and jealousy” and that Kieu had “carefully planned” it by drugging Glen first.7ABC7 Chicago. Bittar built the defense around Kieu’s mental health and history. He told the jury she had endured childhood trauma in war-torn Vietnam, including being raped by an older brother after her mother died when she was five, and that untreated trauma, cultural factors, and an abusive marriage in which Glen “constantly demanded sex in ways that caused her pain” led to a “break from reality” the night of the attack.9Orange County Register. On April 29, 2013, after about four hours of deliberation, a jury of eight women and four men convicted Kieu on both counts and found the knife enhancement true. She sat motionless as the verdict was read.5Orange County Register. Woman Guilty in Husband’s Penis Slicing
Sentence
On June 28, 2013, Judge Toohey sentenced Kieu to seven years to life in prison, which included the aggravated mayhem and torture convictions plus two additional years for the knife enhancement. He denied a defense request for probation and called the attack “calculated and cold as many first-degree murder cases.”12NBC Los Angeles. Catherine Kieu Penis Cut Off Severing Case
Glen addressed the court, telling the judge, “This was a cruel and calculated violation of a person’s body and mind” and that Kieu “tore off my identity as a man.” He added, “I never saw it coming. She has betrayed my trust in people. My right to the pursuit of happiness has been robbed.”13Orange County Register. 7 Years to Life for Woman Who Sliced Off Husband’s Penis
What Happened to the Victim
Because the severed organ was destroyed in the garbage disposal, reattachment was impossible. Dr. Joel Gelman, director of UC Irvine’s Center for Reconstructive Urology, said that any reconstruction would not produce a “native, normal penis,” and that a full phalloplasty, costing upwards of $100,000, would not restore full sensation and would require an inflatable implant to achieve an erection.14Orange County Register. The Appeal
Kieu appealed, arguing there was insufficient evidence she intended to cause cruel or extreme pain and suffering, which is required for a torture conviction. In July 2014, a three-justice panel of California’s Fourth District Court of Appeal rejected that argument, finding that her own statement to officers that Glen “deserved” the injury established the intent to inflict pain.15OC Weekly. Where Catherine Kieu Is Now
The indeterminate seven-to-life sentence made Kieu eligible for parole hearings beginning around 2019 or 2020 once custody credits were applied. At her most recent suitability hearing on September 3, 2025, the California Board of Parole Hearings denied parole for three years, meaning she is not eligible for another hearing until approximately 2028.1California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
