The Celsius cancer lawsuit is a mass tort effort in which plaintiffs allege that regular, long-term consumption of Celsius energy drinks exposed them to carcinogenic substances and contributed to cancers and other serious illnesses. As of mid-2026, no settlements have been reached, cases are being reviewed for consolidation into a multi-district litigation, and the underlying science, particularly around taurine and leukemia, is still developing.
What Plaintiffs Are Claiming
The lawsuits name Celsius Holdings, Inc. under product liability and failure-to-warn theories. Plaintiffs say they drank Celsius products regularly over months or years and developed serious illnesses tied to chemical exposures from the drinks.
Three categories of substances sit at the center of the complaints:
- PFAS, the “forever chemicals,” which plaintiffs allege may enter the product through packaging, manufacturing equipment, or ingredient sourcing. Similar PFAS allegations have been raised against Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Burger King, and the makers of Prime Hydration.
- Benzene, a Group 1 human carcinogen. The theory relies on established chemistry: beverages containing both vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and benzoate preservatives can form benzene when exposed to heat or light. National beverage testing has found a meaningful share of drinks exceeding federal and state benzene limits for drinking water, though the available research contains no Celsius-specific test results.
- Taurine, guarana, artificial sweeteners, and other ingredients, which plaintiffs say may become contaminated or produce harmful effects during manufacturing.
Alleged Injuries and Legal Theories
Plaintiffs link repeated exposure to these substances with cancers including kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and blood cancers such as leukemia. Other claimed injuries include liver damage, thyroid disorders, cardiovascular complications, reproductive harm, and endocrine disruption.
Three legal arguments carry the cases:
- Failure to warn. Plaintiffs argue Celsius knew or should have known about health risks associated with these compounds and did not disclose them.
- Misleading marketing. Because Celsius promotes its drinks as “healthy” fitness beverages, the complaints say the company created a false sense of safety that encouraged frequent, heavy use.
- Substantial contributing factor. Rather than arguing the drinks alone caused illness, plaintiffs say chemical exposure from Celsius was a substantial contributing factor to their diagnoses.
The Taurine and Leukemia Research
Taurine is a standard ingredient in most energy drinks, including Celsius. A study published in Nature in May 2025, led by Jeevisha Bajaj of the Wilmot Cancer Institute at the University of Rochester, found that leukemia cells cannot make taurine themselves. They pull it in from surrounding bone marrow using a transporter protein encoded by the SLC6A6 gene. Once inside the cancer cells, taurine activates a metabolic pathway that promotes glycolysis, giving the cancer energy to grow and spread. In mouse models, blocking taurine uptake impaired leukemia progression and showed synergy with venetoclax, an existing leukemia drug.1Nature. Taurine From Tumour Niche Drives Glycolysis to Promote Leukaemogenesis2University of Rochester Medical Center. A Downside of Taurine: It Drives Leukemia Growth
A follow-up in Cell Death & Disease in early 2026 reported that rapid taurine consumption by leukemia cells depletes the local bone marrow supply, potentially weakening bones and damaging cells responsible for bone renewal.3Medical Xpress. Taurine Fuels Leukemia Impact Bone
What Scientists Caution
The Nature study examined leukemia biology in bone marrow, not energy drink consumption, and several experts have warned against drawing a straight line from a can of Celsius to a cancer diagnosis. Thomas George, an oncologist at the University of Florida, said there is currently no data confirming taurine causes cancer in humans. He and Vijay Yadav of Rutgers University noted that no one has shown taurine consumed in a beverage reaches the bone marrow at concentrations relevant to leukemia progression.4Health.com. Can Taurine Really Raise Your Risk of Blood Cancer
Kristina Norman of the German Institute of Human Nutrition told Medscape it remains unclear whether the findings apply beyond people who already have blood cancer, and that taurine supplementation should “neither be broadly recommended nor discouraged” at this stage. She said people at increased risk of leukemia should probably avoid high-dose taurine supplements.5Medscape. Taurine: Energy Drink Darling, Cancer Suspect
Bajaj urged cancer patients to consult their oncologists before using taurine supplements, saying that while taurine may offer general health benefits, it can be harmful in the context of leukemia.3Medical Xpress. Taurine Fuels Leukemia Impact Bone
Where the Litigation Stands
As of mid-2026, the cancer-related cases are proceeding as mass tort litigation rather than a certified class action. Individual suits have been filed in multiple states, and courts are reviewing motions to consolidate them into a multi-district litigation, which would centralize pretrial proceedings before a single federal judge. The cases are in discovery. Legal observers expect bellwether trials or early settlement talks to develop between 2026 and 2028.6LawFold. Celsius Drink Cancer Lawsuit
There is no global settlement fund. One legal analysis estimates that, if settlements eventually happen, cancer claims could range from $150,000 to more than $500,000, serious organ damage claims from $25,000 to $150,000, and lesser health-impact claims from $5,000 to $25,000. Those figures are speculative at this stage.6LawFold. Celsius Drink Cancer Lawsuit
Who Can File a Claim
Potential claimants generally need to show regular consumption of Celsius products, described as multiple times per week for six months or more, plus a documented medical diagnosis of a qualifying condition. Medical records and purchase evidence strengthen a case.
You cannot file directly with a court in a mass tort of this kind. Claims go through a mass tort law firm handling Celsius cases, typically on a contingency fee ranging from 33% to 40% of any recovery. Most states apply a two-to-three-year statute of limitations running from the date of diagnosis, so timing matters.6LawFold. Celsius Drink Cancer Lawsuit
Other Celsius Legal Actions That Are Not the Cancer Suits
If you are researching Celsius litigation more broadly, note that several other actions are unrelated to the cancer mass tort. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a formal investigation on June 4, 2026, into Celsius and its subsidiary Alani Nutrition, examining whether Alani Nu was marketed in ways that misled consumers about safety for teenagers and children. The probe was prompted in part by the October 2025 death of a 17-year-old in Weslaco, Texas, whose family alleges her enlarged heart was linked to Alani Nu consumption.7Texas Attorney General. Attorney General Ken Paxton Announces Investigation Into Celsius Energy Drink Company A separate class action, Starks v. Celsius Holdings, Inc., filed in January 2024 in the Southern District of California, alleges Celsius Live Fit drinks are misbranded under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.8ClassAction.org. What Celsius Has Said
Celsius Holdings has not publicly commented in detail on the cancer-related mass tort claims. In its 2024 annual report filed with the SEC, the company acknowledged general litigation and regulatory risks, including potential exposure under California’s Proposition 65, which requires warnings on products containing substances linked to cancer. Celsius stated that none of its products currently require Proposition 65 warnings, but it could not predict whether an ingredient might be added to the state’s list in the future.10SEC. If you drink Celsius regularly and have received a diagnosis you believe may be connected, keep your medical records, gather any purchase evidence you can (receipts, order histories, loyalty accounts), and consult a mass tort attorney within your state’s statute of limitations.
