The CentralSquare Technologies lawsuit record centers on three main matters: a $1.9 million class action settlement over the Click2Gov data breaches, an active patent infringement case against competitor Carbyne, and a short-lived antitrust suit against collateralized loan obligation investors that CentralSquare voluntarily dismissed five days after filing. Smaller patent and bankruptcy matters round out the docket.
The Click2Gov Data Breach Class Action
The most consequential case for consumers was Doughty, et al. v. CentralSquare Technologies, LLC, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma (Case No. 5:20-cv-00500-G). A related complaint, Fischer v. CentralSquare Technologies, LLC, was filed in the Southern District of Florida in April 2021 by Amanda Fischer, a Margate, Florida resident who alleged $366.74 in unauthorized charges tied to the breaches.1Classaction.org. Fischer v. CentralSquare Technologies, LLC Complaint Both complaints alleged CentralSquare failed to implement adequate security, comply with FTC cybersecurity guidance, or follow Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards.
The Oklahoma case produced a $1.9 million settlement covering all U.S. residents whose payment card was used through the Click2Gov portal between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2019.2Top Class Actions. CentralSquare Data Breach Class Action Settlement CentralSquare did not admit liability. Class members could choose among three tiers of relief:

The company also agreed to maintain an employee security hotline, retain a third-party vendor for data security audits, and conduct annual risk assessments through outside consultants.2Top Class Actions. CentralSquare Data Breach Class Action Settlement
Judge Charles B. Goodwin held a final fairness hearing on October 7, 2022, and issued final approval on December 30, 2022, finding the settlement “fair, reasonable, adequate and in the best interests of the Settlement Class Members.” Only two people opted out. Class counsel William B. Federman of Federman & Sherwood received $900,000 in fees, costs, and expenses. The case was dismissed with prejudice.3Federman & Sherwood. Doughty v. What Happened in the Click2Gov Breaches
Click2Gov is an online payment portal that municipalities used to collect utility bills, permit fees, and other payments. Between 2017 and 2020, hackers repeatedly exploited vulnerabilities in the platform in three waves. The first, during 2017 and 2018, compromised payment card data for roughly 300,000 people across at least 46 confirmed U.S. locations and one Canadian location.4Classaction.org. Stolen data included names, card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes. The Carbyne Patent Infringement Case
CentralSquare is actively litigating against competitor Carbyne. It filed CentralSquare Technologies, LLC v. Carbyne, Inc. (Case No. 1:24-cv-01497) in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas on December 4, 2024, alleging infringement of U.S. Patent No. RE50,016, “SMS Communication During Emergencies.” The patent covers computer program modules for handling text-message communications during emergencies.9CourtListener. CentralSquare Technologies LLC v. Carbyne, Inc.
Carbyne tried to invalidate the patent through an Inter Partes Review at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. On February 19, 2026, USPTO Director John A. Squires vacated the Patent Trial and Appeal Board’s earlier decision to institute the review and denied Carbyne’s challenge in full. The Director found that Carbyne had taken “inconsistent claim construction positions,” arguing in district court that certain patent terms were indefinite while simultaneously arguing in the IPR that the same terms should be given their plain and ordinary meaning.10Finnegan. The district court case continues. A Markman claim-construction hearing was held on April 22, 2026, and a jury trial is scheduled for December 14, 2026 before Judge Alan D. Albright. Carbyne has filed counterclaims that CentralSquare moved to dismiss in mid-2025.11PACER Monitor. CentralSquare Technologies LLC v. Carbyne, Inc. et al
The Withdrawn Antitrust Suit Against CLO Investors
In January 2026, CentralSquare filed a proposed class action antitrust suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut against Eagle Point Credit Company and more than a dozen other firms holding equity in collateralized loan obligations. The case, CentralSquare Technologies LLC v. Eagle Point Credit Company Inc., et al. (Case No. 3:26-cv-00106), alleged the defendants conspired to inflate interest rates during the transition of leveraged loans from LIBOR to the Secured Overnight Financing Rate.12Bloomberg Law. Eagle Point Credit Accused of Interest Rate Price-Fixing Scheme
The complaint alleged that roughly 70 CLO equity investors coordinated through a conference call organized by Eagle Point to form a working group, then pressured CLO managers to reject loan amendments with credit spread adjustments below a rate recommended by the Alternative Reference Rates Committee, driving up borrowing costs for companies like CentralSquare.13Lockridge Grindal & Nauen. CLO Antitrust Litigation
CentralSquare filed a notice of voluntary dismissal on January 26, 2026, five days after filing the complaint. Judge Victor A. Bolden dismissed the case without prejudice on January 27, 2026, which leaves open the possibility that CentralSquare or other plaintiffs could refile.14PACER Monitor. Other Pending Matters
CentralSquare filed a separate patent infringement suit in 2025 against the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio (Case No. 2:25-CV-774). As of March 2026, the court was considering the defendant’s motion to dismiss.15Leagle. CentralSquare Technologies, LLC v. The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors
The company also pursued a former employee, Jeremy Stevenson Jack, through a bankruptcy adversary proceeding in the Florida Middle Bankruptcy Court (Case No. 2:25-ap-00049), seeking to have a debt declared non-dischargeable based on allegations of actual fraud and embezzlement. The court entered a consent final judgment in CentralSquare’s favor on February 24, 2026, and the case closed on May 1, 2026.16PACER Monitor. CentralSquare Technologies LLC v. Jack
