What Happened on June 15, 2023
Doerman came home early from work that afternoon to the family’s rural residence near New Richmond, in Clermont County. He shot four-year-old Hunter twice. Laura Doerman, the boys’ mother, ran to help. Seven-year-old Clayton fled out the back door. Doerman followed and fired repeatedly, then walked up to the wounded child and shot him in the head. Doerman’s 14-year-old stepdaughter grabbed three-year-old Chase and tried to run. Doerman pointed the rifle at her head and threatened to kill her unless she put the toddler down. When she did, he shot Chase once in the head.1NBC News. Laura fought her husband during the attacks. At one point she pressed her thumb over the rifle’s barrel to keep him from firing and was shot through the thumb. He also bit her.3WCPO. The Warning Signs Before the Killings
Prosecutors later described a string of statements and behaviors that pointed to premeditation. After a grocery run, Doerman ate lunch with his family and told Laura it “would likely be the last good meal he would have.”5NBC 24. Doerman Said Chad Knows What’s Right Before Killing His Sons When Laura tried to call 911 because she thought he was suicidal, he grabbed the phone and threw it, telling her it was “too late to save those boys.” Shortly before opening fire, he told his sons they “did nothing wrong” and were the “best boys ever.”
Nothing in the record suggested a household under obvious strain. Clermont County Prosecutor Mark Tekulve described the Doermans as having appeared to be a “happy, little family.” There were no prior domestic-violence reports at the home and no Children’s Protective Services involvement. Deputies had been dispatched to the address only twice since 2020, neither call involving violence. Who the Boys Were
Clayton, called “Clayton Man,” was seven and protective of his younger brothers; he loved Legos, go-karting, and singing. Hunter, “Hunter Dog,” was four and loved catching frogs at the creek and playing baseball. Charges and the Suppressed Confession
On June 22, 2023, a Clermont County grand jury indicted Doerman on 21 counts: nine counts of aggravated murder with death-penalty specifications, eight counts of kidnapping, and four counts of felonious assault covering the injuries to Laura and the threat to her daughter.9Clermont County Prosecutor’s Office. The state’s case took a hit in March 2024. Judge Ferenc ruled that Doerman’s initial custodial statements to police were inadmissible. Detective Michael Ross had not read the Miranda warnings word-for-word, omitting the right to have a lawyer present during questioning. About 45 minutes in, Doerman said, “I’ll wait for a lawyer, I don’t know, give me a couple of days, I can talk to a lawyer and get nice good answers.” The judge found that was an unambiguous request for counsel and that detectives should have stopped. The Insanity Plea That Didn’t Hold
On March 25, 2024, Doerman added a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.12FOX 19. Prosecutors said Doerman was evaluated multiple times and met the clinical criteria for none of them. They also argued his accounts to police, medical staff, and family were inconsistent, and pointed to his conduct after the shootings — telling officers, “Tell them I did it, take me to jail,” and saying he “should’ve killed” his wife first because she tried to stop him — as evidence he knew what he had done.13WCPO. The Plea Deal and Sentence
On August 2, 2024, at what was described as a surprise hearing, Doerman withdrew the insanity plea and pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault. Several factors shaped the deal. The suppression of the initial confession had weakened the prosecution’s trial evidence. The defense had also filed a motion arguing serious mental illness at the time of the offense, which under a 2021 Ohio law would bar execution even after a conviction; a hearing on that question had been set and was then postponed as both sides negotiated.3WCPO. Judge Ferenc imposed three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, with a minimum of 16 additional years on the felonious assault counts, also to run consecutively.2WLWT. What the Family Said
A victim advocate read Laura Doerman’s statement in court. “Where there used to be so much laughter, happiness, noise of rowdy little boys, there is now silence and emptiness,” she wrote. She said she supported the plea because a guaranteed life sentence was “what is best for my family,” and she asked the public to remember Clayton, Hunter, and Chase as boys who loved fishing, go-karting, swimming, and being outdoors together.16WLWT. Chief Assistant Prosecutor Lara Baron Allen read the stepdaughter’s statement, in which the teenager addressed Doerman directly. She said she had once looked up to him as a father, and that the holidays were now empty: “I don’t get to do any of the fun stuff anymore because they’re gone and you took their lives.” She closed: “I will never forgive you, but I will not hate you.”17WCPO. Where Doerman Is Now
After sentencing, Doerman was moved from the Clermont County Jail to the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, for intake into the state prison system, including physical and mental health evaluations that would set his permanent facility and security classification.18FOX 19.
