Chandler Halderson Case: Murders, Trial, and Life Sentence

The Chandler Halderson case is the 2021 Wisconsin double murder in which 23-year-old Chandler Halderson shot and dismembered his parents, Bart and Krista Halderson, at their Windsor home after they uncovered years of lies he had told about attending college and working remote jobs. A Dane County jury convicted him on all counts in January 2022, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Wisconsin Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction in November 2025, and the state Supreme Court declined further review in June 2026.¹

The Lies That Led to the Killings

For years, Chandler had built a fictional adult life for his parents’ benefit. He told them he was enrolled at Madison Area Technical College working toward an IT degree. He had actually failed out after roughly one semester and spent his time playing video games.²

He also claimed to be working remotely for a Wisconsin insurance company. When Bart, a certified accountant, asked why no paychecks were arriving, Chandler fabricated email exchanges with a fake HR department and blamed payroll errors. He created at least four phony email accounts and used a burner phone to impersonate a college adviser on a call with his father.³⁴

In June 2021, the story escalated. Chandler announced he had been hired by SpaceX and was moving to Florida. Prosecutors would later describe this as his attempt to escape the collapsing insurance-job fiction by inventing “an even more pretend job.”³ When he produced no paperwork or money for the move, he faked a serious injury, claiming a fall down the stairs had left him with a concussion, spinal damage, and nerve damage.

The lies finally cracked when Bart contacted Madison College directly to request Chandler’s transcripts and learned that the administrators Chandler had been emailing did not exist.³

How Bart and Krista Halderson Were Killed

Bart and Chandler were scheduled to meet at the college on July 1, 2021. At 2:00 p.m. that day, Bart sent his last text message: “I’m ready whenever you are.”⁵

Investigators believe Chandler shot Bart in the basement of the family’s Windsor home once his father realized the full extent of the deception. An autopsy confirmed Bart had been shot at least twice in the back. Prosecutors say Chandler then killed his mother, Krista, when she returned home. As Deputy District Attorney William Brown told the jury, “There was no way out of his lies.”²

Over the following days, Chandler dismembered both bodies and scattered the remains. He drove Bart’s torso to a farm in Cottage Grove owned by his girlfriend’s family and left Krista’s remains near the Wisconsin River. He burned other remains in the family’s fireplace, where forensic investigators later recovered more than 200 human bone fragments.⁶ Both parents’ phones were found stuffed inside a shoe in the home, wrapped in tinfoil and paper towels. Bart’s phone showed no activity after July 1.⁴

How Chandler Was Caught

On July 2, Chandler told a family acquaintance that his parents had left for a plumbing emergency at the family cabin in Langlade County. On July 7, he walked into a police precinct and filed a missing-persons report, saying his parents had gone away for a Fourth of July weekend and never returned. Detectives were skeptical almost immediately. The frugal Haldersons taking a spontaneous gambling trip did not match anything relatives knew of them.⁷

The break came from Chandler’s girlfriend, Cathryn “Cat” Mellender. She had been using Snapchat’s location-tracking feature and had saved a screenshot from July 3 showing his avatar at a remote spot near the Wisconsin River. When investigators searched that area, they found Krista Halderson’s remains.⁶

A separate lead came from the Cottage Grove farm, where a witness had seen Chandler acting suspiciously near a wood line on July 5. On July 8, police searched the property and found Bart’s torso concealed with sticks and twigs. Nearby sat an oil drum containing scissors, pruning shears, and a broken bow saw. Officers also recovered a semi-automatic SKS rifle from a barn. The gun had been given to Chandler in June 2021 by an online friend from Kansas, along with roughly 480 to 600 rounds of ammunition. A Wisconsin State Crime Lab firearms examiner later matched a bullet fragment recovered from the Halderson basement to that rifle.⁸

Luminol testing of the basement lit up with blood evidence consistent with a cleanup, and a shell casing was recovered there.⁵ Chandler’s own devices worked against him too. On July 8, he searched Google for “Wisconsin dismembered body found,” “Body found Wisconsin,” and “Bart and Krista.”⁴ Bart’s remains were formally identified on July 10, and Chandler was charged with his father’s murder on July 15, 2021.

The Trial and Verdict

The case was tried in Dane County Circuit Court before Judge John Hyland, with Deputy District Attorneys Andrea Raymond and William Brown prosecuting. The defense called no witnesses, and Chandler did not testify.⁹

In closing arguments, Raymond told jurors the case was “not a whodunit,” noting that Bart and Krista went into their home and “never came out, at least as whole people.” She walked through the physical evidence: the shell casing and bullet fragments, the blood in the basement, the bone fragments in the fireplace, and the victims’ blood on Chandler’s shoes.¹⁰ Brown put the motive plainly: “Everyone was going to see him for what he was. Just a liar. And he couldn’t handle that.”

Mellender testified for the prosecution, breaking down as she recounted the smell of smoke in the home on July 2 (which Chandler had blamed on a broken fireplace) and his behavior over the holiday weekend.¹¹ Chandler’s brother Mitchell also testified. He had driven nearly three hours to the family cabin during the search and given sheriff’s deputies permission to break the locks. His mother, he said, was a “helicopter parent” who would never leave town without telling him.¹²

On January 21, 2022, the jury deliberated for roughly two hours before returning guilty verdicts on all eight counts: two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of mutilating a corpse, two counts of hiding a corpse, and two counts of providing false information.⁹

Life Sentence Without Parole

Chandler initially asked to skip his own sentencing hearing. Brown opposed the request in a letter to Judge Hyland, calling it “absurd and an affront to the public’s interest.”¹³

On March 17, 2022, Judge Hyland sentenced Halderson to life in prison without the possibility of extended supervision, saying that granting parole “would not be fair to the community.” When Chandler’s grandmother expressed hope that he might someday be eligible for parole, the judge replied: “I cannot grant Chandler Halderson the same spirit of empathy and generosity his own grandmother gave him.”⁹

Mitchell Halderson’s fiancée read a victim-impact statement saying she and Mitchell “would never feel safe if he returned to the community.” Raymond told the court that across all the jailhouse calls and messages reviewed in the case, Chandler had never once mourned his parents. When someone told him about their memorial service, he suggested they “watch a slasher movie to overcome their sadness.”¹⁴ A pre-sentencing report found no underlying mental illness or history of childhood mistreatment that would explain his behavior. Chandler’s only comments were that he had been “warned not to show” his feelings because of the case’s scrutiny, and he announced his intent to appeal.

Where the Case Stands Now

Halderson’s appellate counsel filed a no-merit report, and Halderson himself raised claims that his trial lawyer had failed to present a defense, cross-examine adequately, or call experts.¹⁵

On November 26, 2025, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction in a summary disposition. The court found that evidence of Chandler’s lies about school, work, and health was properly admitted to prove motive, plan, identity, and intent; that the evidence of guilt (the false missing-persons report, bone fragments in the fireplace, and his travels to where the remains turned up) was extensive; that the life sentence was not unduly harsh; and that trial counsel had in fact cross-examined witnesses and challenged the state’s proof. The court concluded there was “no arguable merit to any issue that could be raised in postconviction proceedings.”¹⁵

Halderson petitioned the Wisconsin Supreme Court, arguing insufficient evidence, a failure to weigh rehabilitation potential in young offenders, and that media coverage had denied him an impartial jury.¹⁶ On June 16, 2026, the court declined to review the case.¹

Chandler Halderson, now 28, is serving his sentence at Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin.¹⁷ His convictions on two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of mutilating a corpse, and providing false information are final, and he has no possibility of parole.
