Change of Address in Georgia: License, Registration & Taxes

A change of address in Georgia starts with your driver’s license: state law gives you 60 days to update it, and that update is the anchor for everything else. Vehicle registration, voter registration, and state tax records each run through a different agency on a different timeline, so working through them in order keeps renewal notices, refund checks, and official mail from landing at your old place.

Update Your Driver’s License First

Under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-33, anyone who moves from the address shown on their Georgia driver’s license must apply for an updated license within 60 days.1Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-33 – Change of Address or Name

The fastest route is the DDS Online Services Portal. Log in or create an account, complete the address change form, and submit. The Department of Driver Services verifies your new address through USPS, so file your mail-forwarding request with the Postal Service before you start. Your first address change during the original eight-year license term is free. A second change during that term, or a change within 150 days of expiration, is billed as a renewal instead.2Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License

Expect the new physical card in the mail within about two to three weeks.2Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License In the meantime, carry the confirmation alongside your old card. If you handle the change in person at a DDS office instead, bring two proof-of-residency documents from separate sources showing your name and new physical address, each dated within the last six months. P.O. boxes don’t count.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Update License – Section: Acceptable Proof of Residency Documents

Update Your Vehicle Registration

Vehicle registration runs through the Georgia Department of Revenue, not DDS, and the two systems are sequential. Update your license first, then update your registration through the Georgia DRIVES e-Services portal. You’ll need your license plate number or VIN, your driver’s license number, and proof of residency at the new address.4Georgia Department of Revenue. Moving to a Different County

An inter-county move adds a step. Georgia generally requires you to register your vehicle in your new county within 30 days of establishing residence there. County tag offices handle registration locally and requirements vary, so call the tag office in your new county before you go to confirm the documents they need.6Georgia.gov. Register a Vehicle Georgia’s Title Ad Valorem Tax is a one-time tax paid when you first title a vehicle, so a county-to-county move won’t trigger a second TAVT payment. Annual registration costs and local fees may differ, though.

Update Your Voter Registration

Voter registration is handled through the Georgia Secretary of State, separately from DDS and DOR. The My Voter Page portal lets you update your address, which automatically adjusts your precinct and polling location. You’ll need your Georgia driver’s license number to authenticate.7Georgia Secretary of State. Voter Resources

Timing matters more here than for other updates. Georgia law requires voter registration applications to be submitted by the close of business on the fifth Monday before a general primary or general election.8Fastcase. Georgia Code 21-2-224 – Registration Deadlines That’s roughly five weeks before election day. If an election is close, check the Secretary of State’s posted deadline for that cycle before you assume online updating is enough.

If you can’t use the online portal, submit a paper voter registration application to the county registrar’s office in your new county. If you’re leaving Georgia entirely, cancel your registration through the Secretary of State’s online cancellation portal or in writing to your county registrar, and allow one to two weeks for processing.9Georgia Secretary of State. Update Your State Tax Records

There is no standalone address-change form for Georgia state taxes. You have three options depending on how you file:

  • E-filing your state return through tax software updates your address automatically when you submit with the new information.
  • The Georgia Tax Center portal lets you log in, click “Manage Names & Addresses,” and update the address directly. This works year-round, which makes it the practical choice for a mid-year move.
  • On a paper Form 500, check the box indicating your address has changed.10Georgia Department of Revenue. Change Address on Tax Forms

Balance-due notices and audit correspondence go to the address on file. “I never received it” doesn’t extend a Department of Revenue deadline.

USPS Forwarding and Federal Agencies

None of the Georgia state updates redirect your actual mail. That takes a separate change-of-address request through the U.S. Postal Service, and it should be the very first step because DDS verifies your new address through USPS. File online for a $1.25 identity verification fee. Forwarding may begin within three business days, but allow up to two weeks for full processing.11United States Postal Service. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address

USPS forwarding does not notify government agencies or private companies for you.11United States Postal Service. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address Two federal agencies are worth updating promptly:

  • IRS: File Form 8822, Change of Address, to update your home mailing address so refunds, notices, and correspondence reach you.12Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8822, Change of Address
  • Social Security Administration: If you receive Social Security or Medicare, update your address through your my Social Security account online. SSI recipients must call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office in person.13DisasterAssistance.gov. Social Security Update Contact Information

Professional Licenses

Anyone holding a professional license issued by a Georgia state board — nursing, real estate, cosmetology, engineering, and dozens more — is required to update the address on file within 30 days. There is no fee. Update online through the Secretary of State’s MyLicense portal or submit a paper form by mail or email to the relevant board.14Georgia Secretary of State. Name and Address Change Request Form

This is the update most often forgotten, and it’s the one that can quietly cause real damage. Boards mail renewal notices to the address on file. Miss the notice, miss the renewal, and the license lapses. Practicing on a lapsed license, even by accident, can trigger disciplinary action.

Insurance and Financial Accounts

Auto insurance rates are tied to where you live. A different zip code or county can move your premium in either direction, and your insurer needs the change to keep the policy valid. If you’re in an accident at the new address while the policy still shows the old one, the insurer has grounds to dispute coverage. Call your auto and homeowner’s or renter’s carriers as soon as you move.

Banks, credit card issuers, and investment accounts also need the current address. Beyond mail delivery, financial institutions run fraud-monitoring against your address on file. A charge pattern in a new city paired with an outdated address is a common trigger for a frozen account. Most institutions accept an address change through their website or app in under a minute.
