The assassination of Charlie Kirk took place on September 10, 2025, when the 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was shot in the neck by a long-distance rifle round while answering student questions at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He died shortly after at Timpanogos Regional Hospital. Two days later, 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson was arrested and charged with aggravated murder and six other counts. Utah prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

The Manhunt and Arrest
Federal, state, and local agencies ran a multi-day search. The FBI set up tip lines and a digital media portal, which took in 11,000 tips in the first 24 hours and more than 16,000 overall.5FBI. The pretrial fights have centered on media access and publicity. The defense repeatedly tried to close hearings, seal filings, and bar cameras, warning that coverage would taint the jury pool. Judge Graf rejected those requests, ruling that the public’s right to an open process outweighed the defense’s concerns.16New York Times. Tyler Robinson Charlie Kirk Hearings Media Access
On June 26, 2026, Judge Graf held Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard in civil contempt for violating a pretrial publicity order. Security Failures at the Event
How a lone shooter reached a campus rooftop with a rifle has been one of the central questions since the attack. An Associated Press review found that UVU deployed only six campus officers for an event that drew thousands, and the university did not coordinate with outside law enforcement to help secure it.20KUER. The shooting also drove a wave of state proposals targeting political violence. The North Carolina House passed the “Political Terrorism Prevention Act” 105–6, raising penalties for politically motivated crimes and making offenders ineligible for parole. In New Jersey, Republican state Senator Doug Steinhardt introduced a bill to classify political violence as a hate crime with mandatory minimums. In Ohio, state Representative Jack Daniels proposed making politically motivated murder punishable by life in prison or death. The ACLU of New Jersey opposed several of these measures, with its executive director arguing that “the response to political violence must be more thoughtful than rushed legislation that expands criminal punishment.”25Politico.
