Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while taking questions from students at Utah Valley University in Orem. A single rifle round fired from a nearby rooftop struck him in the neck. A 22-year-old Utah man, Tyler Robinson, was arrested 33 hours later after his family turned him in and now faces seven criminal counts, including aggravated murder; prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. The Charlie Kirk shooting also triggered a sweeping political reaction, from an executive order designating “Antifa” a domestic terrorist organization to the brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! under FCC pressure.
What Happened at Utah Valley University
Kirk was in Orem to launch his “American Comeback Tour,” built around his “Prove Me Wrong” format of tent-side debates with students. Roughly 3,000 people showed up, far more than the 600 originally planned for. At about 12:15 p.m. local time, as Kirk answered a student in the Sorensen Student Center courtyard, he was hit by a single shot.1Inside Higher Ed. University police believe the round was fired from the roof of the Losee Center, a building overlooking the courtyard, roughly 200 yards away. Witnesses described hearing a single “pop.” Video showed six men from Kirk’s private security team carrying him to an SUV that rushed him to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery but did not survive.2CNN. Six campus police officers were assigned to the event, supplemented by Kirk’s eight-person private detail. Security analysts later pointed to the failure to monitor surrounding rooftops as a critical gap. The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said it had no involvement in the event until after the shooting.3Utah News Dispatch. Who Tyler Robinson Is
Robinson was a 22-year-old electrical apprentice at Dixie Technical College in St. George, Utah. He had briefly attended Utah State University on a presidential scholarship in 2021 and had no prior criminal record. He grew up in a conservative, Republican-voting family in Washington County, and neighbors told reporters the family were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.4St. George News. According to his mother, Robinson’s politics had moved left over the preceding year, and he had become “more pro-gay and trans-rights oriented.” His romantic partner, with whom he lived, is a transgender woman.5The New York Times. His online footprint was harder to characterize. Robinson had engraved his rifle and bullet casings with messages that blended political slogans, internet humor, and gaming references, including “Hey fascist! Catch!” followed by a stratagem code from the video game Helldivers 2, a reference to the antifascist folk song “Bella Ciao,” and the line “If you Read / This, You Are / GAY / lmao.” The New Yorker described the inscriptions as reflecting “deep internet culture” more than coherent ideology.7The New Yorker. After the shooting, Robinson confessed in messages on Discord, first joking that a suspect in FBI surveillance photos was his “doppelganger” before admitting, “It was me.”8The New York Times. The Weapon and the Manhunt
Investigators recovered the weapon wrapped in a dark towel in a wooded area at the edge of the UVU campus. It was a Mauser model 98 bolt-action rifle that had belonged to Robinson’s grandfather, modified to fire .30-06 ammunition. Because of its age, the firearm may have entered the United States before federal laws requiring serial numbers for tracing took effect.10NBC News. Authorities initially detained a person of interest at the scene but released him after he was cleared. A retired Washington County detective with a religious tie to the family helped negotiate the surrender, personally driving Robinson and his parents to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on the evening of September 11, 2025. The retired detective stepped in partly because Robinson was experiencing suicidal thoughts and authorities wanted to avoid a violent confrontation.12Police1. The Criminal Case Against Robinson
Robinson was formally charged on September 16, 2025, in the Fourth Judicial District Court of Utah County. The information lists seven counts:
- Count 1: Aggravated murder, a capital felony.
- Count 2: Felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony.
- Counts 3 and 4: Two counts of obstruction of justice, second-degree felonies, tied to directing his partner to delete messages and not speak to police.
- Counts 5 and 6: Two counts of witness tampering, third-degree felonies.
- Count 7: Commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
The first two counts and the seventh carry a sentencing enhancement under Utah law for selecting the victim based on political expression.13Utah County Attorney. State of Utah v. As of June 2026, Robinson, now 23, has not entered a plea. Fourth District Court Judge Tony Graf Jr. is presiding. A preliminary hearing to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed to trial is scheduled for July 6 through 10, 2026. Graf denied a defense request to close that hearing to the public, finding the defense had not shown a realistic likelihood of prejudice to a fair trial, though he ordered that exhibits introduced at the hearing cannot be copied by the public or media.15Deseret News. Tyler Robinson Case Judge Denied Closed Preliminary Hearing
The pretrial fight has been contentious. Defense attorneys accused Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard of violating a court-imposed gag order by telling TMZ that the state had “ample evidence” to prove Robinson’s guilt. On June 26, 2026, Judge Graf found the prosecution in civil contempt, ruling that “a prosecutor’s opinion of guilt is particularly likely to create prejudice” and that Ballard had knowingly violated the order. The defense asked that the death penalty be removed as a sanction; Graf denied that, calling it “grossly disproportionate” to the misconduct, and instead ordered the state to pay Robinson’s reasonable attorney fees connected to the contempt proceedings.16Deseret News. A separate development has complicated the ballistics case. According to defense filings, the ATF has been unable to match the bullet recovered from Kirk’s body to the rifle linked to Robinson.16Deseret News. The Political Reaction
Condemnations came quickly across both parties. That call was acted on. Teachers, government workers, and a TV pundit lost their jobs after making comments perceived as unsympathetic. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy used social media to identify American Airlines pilots alleged to have celebrated the killing. The Antifa Executive Order
On September 22, 2025, twelve days after the shooting, Trump signed an executive order designating “Antifa” a domestic terrorist organization, fulfilling a promise he made at Kirk’s memorial. A follow-up presidential memorandum, NSPM-7, directed the National Joint Terrorism Task Forces to investigate and prosecute entities linked to political violence and instructed the Treasury Department to disrupt associated financial networks.27White House.
