Chris Moyer Murder: The 911 Call, Victims, and Motive

The Chris Moyer murder case refers to the June 17, 2011 killings of Irina Geller Moyer, 39, and her seven-year-old son Dylan in their Warrington Township, Pennsylvania home. Christopher Moyer, a 44-year-old freelance computer consultant, bludgeoned his wife and son with a baseball bat, called 911 to confess, then drove to Hatboro and killed himself on SEPTA train tracks. Investigators identified financial strain as the only apparent motive but never established a definitive reason for the attack.

The 911 Call

Around 9:40 p.m. on Friday, June 17, Moyer dialed 911 and calmly told the dispatcher he needed to report a murder. Asked what had happened, he said “a mother and son bludgeoned to death.” When the dispatcher asked who he was, Moyer answered, “I am the husband.” Asked directly whether he had done it, he replied, “Yes, I did.” He said he was “positive” the victims were dead and ended the call.¹

What Police Found at the Home

Officers from the Warrington, Warminster, and Warwick departments surrounded 167 Redstone Drive and tried to make contact with anyone inside. At about 11:00 p.m. they entered through the garage.²

Irina was in a second-floor bathroom next to the master bedroom, a towel draped over her face. Dylan was in his bedroom. A bloody baseball bat lay nearby. There were no signs of a struggle anywhere in the house, and investigators believed both victims had been struck while they slept.¹² Bucks County Coroner Dr. Joseph Campbell ruled both deaths homicides caused by blunt force trauma to the head.³

On the front door, Moyer had left a handwritten list of family members’ names and phone numbers for authorities.² A typed note with similar contact information was found inside.¹

How Christopher Moyer Died

After the 911 call, Moyer drove to Hatboro. At 12:56 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, the engineer of a SEPTA Regional Rail train on the Warminster line reported striking a person near the Meadowbrook Avenue crossing between Jacksonville and York roads.⁴ Hatboro police found his body on the tracks, with his dark Toyota Camry parked nearby. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a suicide caused by multiple traumas and ordered toxicology testing.²

Who Irina and Dylan Were

Irina Geller Moyer was a native of Kiev, Ukraine, and married Christopher in 2002 in what was a second marriage for both. She worked from home in the computer industry. Her parents, brother, and sister-in-law lived in Northeast Philadelphia, and the family had been planning to visit them the weekend she was killed.⁵ Neighbors described her as friendly but said she rarely left the house.⁶

Dylan had just completed the first grade at Titus Elementary School in Warrington. His kindergarten teacher, Lynda Costello, recalled his “beautiful smile” and how he always said “thank you” after receiving help. Teacher Theresa Yanny said both parents were deeply involved in his education and clearly “vested in his child’s success.”⁷ Neighbors remembered a boy with a large vocabulary who liked to research topics on the computer.⁶

What Investigators Said About the Motive

Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler said the family “may have been having financial problems,” and investigators identified financial strain as the only potential motive they could find.³⁸ Court records showed the Moyers had narrowly avoided foreclosure in 2006 after paying off a federal lien, and in September 2010 the state filed a $2,228.20 lien against the Redstone Drive home.⁵²

The picture was complicated by other evidence. Court records showed no prior criminal charges and no documented history of domestic violence.⁷ Moyer’s father, Warren Moyer, said he had spoken with Christopher on the morning of June 17 and that his son was in “good spirits,” having just renewed a contract with a computer client.⁵ Family members and neighbors said they did not know “why all this happened.”

Case Closure

Heckler said there was “nothing left for his office to investigate” because the suspect had acted alone and was dead.⁸ The case was classified as a double murder-suicide with no other suspects. Heckler noted at the time that pending toxicology results could indicate whether the victims had been drugged before the attack, but no results from those tests appeared in subsequent reporting.⁹
