Milwaukee’s parking rules start with one that catches almost every newcomer: no vehicle may park on a city street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, without a night parking permit or a temporary permission.1City of Milwaukee. Overnight Street Parking
The 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. restriction applies six nights a week. Sunday mornings are the exception: no permit or permission is needed to park on the street during those hours on Sunday.1City of Milwaukee. The permit is electronic. There is no sticker; enforcement officers verify status by scanning your plate, so the plate number you enter at purchase has to match the vehicle exactly. Permits can be bought online or in person at City Hall, the Zeidler Municipal Building, Milwaukee Police District stations, Parking Violation Bureaus, or the City Tow Lot.3City of Milwaukee. For occasional situations, such as out-of-town guests, the city allows three free temporary night parking permissions per 30-day period through its online portal.4City of Milwaukee. Temporary Night Parking Permission Three nights a month is the cap, so this does not substitute for a permit if you park on the street often.
A state-issued disabled hangtag does not by itself let you park overnight. Hangtag holders need a separate Special Disabled Night Permit, which is free and valid for one year.3City of Milwaukee. Night Parking Permits Permanent disabled plates, on the other hand, need no night permit at all.
Winter Alternate-Side Parking
From December 1 through March 1, an alternate-side rule takes effect for overnight parking. Even with a valid night permit, you must park on the side of the street that matches the calendar date:1City of Milwaukee. Parking Regulations
- Even-numbered dates: park on the side with even-numbered house addresses.
- Odd-numbered dates: park on the side with odd-numbered house addresses.
The detail that generates most winter tickets is the timing of the switch. The date changes at midnight, not in the morning. If tonight is the 14th and you leave the car on the even side, you need to move it before midnight so it is on the odd side for the 15th. Waiting until morning is too late.

Snow Emergencies
A snow emergency is a separate declaration made by the Commissioner of Public Works when a 24-hour snowfall creates a serious hazard. Once declared, it stays in effect up to 72 hours or until plowing is complete.1City of Milwaukee. Daytime Parking, Meters, and Distance Rules
Meter time limits vary by location, and you have to leave the block when your time is up. Milwaukee prohibits re-parking on the same block after your meter expires, so sliding one space over to reset the clock still earns a ticket. - At least 10 feet from a fire hydrant
- At least 15 feet from the nearest edge of a crosswalk
- At least 4 feet from a driveway or alley entrance
Parking within 15 feet of a crosswalk, in an intersection, in a safety zone, double parking, or facing the wrong direction on a street each carries a $40 fine.5City of Milwaukee. Parking Citation Types These are flat-rate; unlike meter tickets, they do not increase over time on their own, but the late-fee clock still runs if you ignore them.
Fines and What Happens If You Don’t Pay
Parking fines run from $30 to $100. Most common violations sit between $35 and $40, while some, like driving an unregistered vehicle, start at $100.5City of Milwaukee. Parking Citation Types
Payment is due within 14 days. After that, the consequences stack:7City of Milwaukee. Parking Citations
- 14 days: many violations add a $5 surcharge.
- 28 days: an additional increase applies to certain violations.
- 58 days: the city can place a hold on your vehicle registration, blocking plate renewal.
- 80 days: the debt is sent to a collection contractor, and the state can intercept your Wisconsin income tax refund.

As of January 1, 2026, Milwaukee also enforces a habitual parking violator ordinance. Any vehicle with five or more citations that are 60 days past due can be towed from a public street, highway, or city-owned lot, whether it is legally parked at the time or not.7City of Milwaukee. Parking Citations To get the vehicle back, you have to pay all tow and storage fees and either pay every outstanding citation or schedule a municipal court appearance.
If Your Car Gets Towed
Milwaukee charges a $150 towing fee plus $25 per calendar day in storage.8City of Milwaukee. Tow Lot The tow lot is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and closed on Sundays. A Friday-night tow can add two days of storage before you can retrieve the vehicle.
To pick up your car, bring a valid driver’s license, proof of liability insurance showing the carrier, insured person, and vehicle including VIN, and enough to cover the full tow and storage bill. Sending someone else? They need a valid driver’s license, a copy of your ID, and a notarized letter from you authorizing the retrieval, identifying the vehicle by color, make, model, VIN, plate number, and tow number.
