Cobos-Martinez Case: Motel Killing, ICE Release, and Prosecution

The Cobos-Martinez case centers on Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, a 37-year-old Cuban national charged with capital murder after allegedly beheading his employer, 50-year-old motel manager Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah, at a Dallas motel on September 10, 2025. The killing drew national attention because Cobos-Martinez was in the United States illegally under a final order of deportation and had been released by ICE eight months earlier on an order of supervision, after Cuba refused to take him back.¹²

What Happened at the Dallas Motel

Cobos-Martinez worked at the Downtown Suites motel on Samuell Boulevard in East Dallas, where Nagamallaiah was the manager. According to an arrest affidavit, the confrontation began when Nagamallaiah told him not to use a broken washing machine, relaying the instruction through a woman who could translate. Cobos-Martinez became angry that Nagamallaiah had not spoken to him directly.³

Video captured what followed. Cobos-Martinez left a room, returned with a machete, and began stabbing and cutting Nagamallaiah. The victim fled toward the motel’s front office, where his wife, Nisha, and 18-year-old son, Gaurav, were present. Both tried to intervene. Cobos-Martinez pushed them aside and continued the attack until he had severed Nagamallaiah’s head. He took the victim’s cellphone and key card, kicked the severed head into the parking lot, and placed it in a dumpster.⁴³

Officers spotted him fleeing and arrested him about a block away. He was carrying the machete and the victim’s belongings, and later admitted to the killing in a detective’s interview.³

Prior Arrests in Three States

Cobos-Martinez had accumulated arrests across at least eight years in Florida, California, and Texas. In February 2017, Brevard County, Florida authorities arrested him for felony grand theft of a motor vehicle over an allegedly stolen Mercedes in Miami-Dade County. That charge was dropped. In June 2017, he was arrested in South Lake Tahoe, California, accused of attempting to carjack a woman while naked.⁵

In 2018, Harris County, Texas, charged him with indecency with a child by sexual contact. Prosecutors dismissed that charge for insufficient evidence, but while in custody he punched a jailer and broke the jailer’s jaw. He pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to a year in jail.⁶

He was later extradited to California for the 2017 carjacking case. A jury acquitted him of carjacking but convicted him of false imprisonment. He was placed on probation in August 2023, credited with nearly five years already served, and then, according to El Dorado County prosecutors, fled probation. In August 2024, DART police arrested him in Texas on a fugitive-from-justice charge tied to the California case.⁶⁵

Why He Was Free: The ICE Release

After that 2024 arrest, Cobos-Martinez was held by ICE at the Bluebonnet Detention Center in Dallas. He was under a final order of deportation, but on January 13, 2025, ICE released him on an order of supervision. The agency stated that Cuba refused to accept him because of his criminal history and that removal flights to Cuba were lacking under the Biden administration.²

After the killing, ICE lodged an immigration detainer for federal arrest and removal, calling him a “depraved criminal illegal alien from Cuba” and saying the “horrible and senseless act of violence could have been prevented” had he not been allowed to remain in the country.⁷

The Political Dispute Over Responsibility

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Cobos-Martinez “should have never been in our Country” and blamed his release on the Biden administration, vowing he would be “charged with murder in the first degree” and “prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law.” He credited the work of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and “Border Czar” Tom Homan.⁸

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the case showed why the administration was “removing criminal illegal aliens to third countries,” adding that “President Trump and Secretary Noem are no longer allowing barbaric criminals to indefinitely remain in America.” The administration pointed to its new policy of deporting nationals of countries without deportation agreements to third countries willing to accept them, naming Guatemala, South Sudan, Eswatini, and Rwanda.⁸¹ Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas said “Joe Biden and every House Democrat who voted against stronger border security have blood on their hands.”⁹

A former Biden administration official pushed back, noting that the supervision order releasing Cobos-Martinez was issued seven days before Biden left office, and asking why the Trump administration had not revoked it during the eight months that followed.¹

Where the Prosecution Stands

Cobos-Martinez was booked into the Dallas County Jail on a capital murder charge and has been held without bond.⁵ A Dallas County grand jury returned an indictment for murder on October 23, 2025.¹⁰

In November 2025, prosecutor Julie Johnson told the court that the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office did not intend to seek the death penalty, though she reserved the right to change course “should anything come up,” and said she would provide a final answer by January 8, 2026. Under Texas law, a capital murder conviction without a death sentence carries mandatory life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. No trial date has been set. Cobos-Martinez remains in the Dallas County Jail under both the capital murder charge and an active ICE immigration detainer.¹¹

Who the Victim Was

Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah, known to many as “Bob,” was originally from the southern Indian state of Karnataka. He attended school and college in Bengaluru before immigrating to the United States in 2018.¹² He had managed the Downtown Suites for two or three years at the time of his death and is survived by his wife, Nisha, and son, Gaurav, both of whom witnessed the attack.¹³
