Colorado Auto Sales Tax: Rates, Trade-Ins, and Ownership Tax

Colorado’s auto sales tax starts at a 2.9% state rate, but the combined bill for most buyers lands somewhere between roughly 3% and over 8% once city, county, and special district taxes are added on top. Your total depends on where you live, not where you buy, and the taxable amount can be reduced by the value of any vehicle you trade in.

The 2.9% State Rate

The statewide sales tax on vehicle purchases is 2.9%, set by C.R.S. § 39-26-106.1FindLaw. Colorado Code 39-26-106 – Schedule of Sales Tax It applies to every vehicle purchase regardless of type or location within the state.

If you buy a car outside Colorado and bring it home, you owe use tax instead of sales tax, at the same 2.9% rate.2Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. Local and District Taxes Stack on Top

The 2.9% is rarely the whole bill. Cities, counties, and special districts add their own rates under C.R.S. § 29-2-105.4Justia Law. Colorado Code 29-2-105 – Contents of Sales Tax Ordinances and Proposals The rate is set by your home address, not the dealership’s, so shopping in a lower-tax town won’t save you anything on tax. You pay the rate for the jurisdiction where the vehicle is registered.

Two regional districts affect the Denver metro area. The Regional Transportation District adds 1.0%, and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District adds 0.1%, both covering portions of Denver, Boulder, Jefferson, Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, and Broomfield counties.5Colorado Department of Revenue. Some cities operate under home-rule charters and collect their own sales tax directly, with their own rules about what’s taxable.7Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. Local Government Sales Tax Denver, Aurora, Colorado Springs, Boulder, and Lakewood are among them. In those cities you may need to deal with the city tax office separately from the county clerk. The Department of Revenue publishes the DR 1002 rate schedule listing every self-collecting jurisdiction.

To find your exact combined rate, use the Department of Revenue’s online tax rate lookup and enter your specific address. Do this before you sign anything so the number on the contract doesn’t surprise you.

Trade-Ins Lower the Taxable Amount

When you trade a vehicle in at a dealership, its fair market value is subtracted from the purchase price before sales tax is calculated. Colorado’s definition of “purchase price” under C.R.S. § 39-26-102(7) excludes the value of exchanged property when the trade-in is a vehicle subject to Colorado licensing or registration.8Justia Law. Colorado Revised Statutes Title 39-26-102 – Definitions

The math is simple. Buy a $35,000 car, trade in a vehicle valued at $10,000, and you pay tax on $25,000. At a combined 7% rate, that saves you $700. The credit applies to the full tax calculation, state and local, not just the 2.9% state portion. Make sure the trade-in value is written into your purchase agreement, because the county clerk needs to see it documented to apply the credit at registration.

Who Collects the Tax

Dealer Purchases

Dealers calculate and collect state, local, and district sales taxes at the point of sale, then file a DR 0024 (Standard Sales Tax Receipt for Vehicle Sales) with the county clerk where you’ll register.9Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. DR 0024 – Standard Sales Tax Receipt for Vehicle Sales You’ll need that receipt at registration.

Confirm the dealer used your home address’s rate, not the dealership’s. Errors happen, and if the wrong rate was collected, you’ll sort it out at the county clerk during registration.

Private Party and Out-of-State Purchases

When no Colorado dealer collects for you, the tax is your responsibility. You pay it at your county clerk and recorder’s office when you title and register the vehicle. Bring the signed title, a bill of sale showing the purchase price, and proof of your Colorado address.10Colorado Department of Revenue. The 60-Day Registration Deadline

You have 60 days from the purchase date to register a newly purchased vehicle.11Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. For 2026, the Department of Revenue charges 8% annual interest on late tax if you pay before receiving a deficiency notice, or 11% if you don’t, accruing from the original due date.13Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. Exemptions

Vehicles gifted between immediate family members are generally exempt from Colorado sales tax. This typically covers transfers between parents, children, spouses, and siblings, provided no money changes hands and you can document the family relationship at the county clerk’s office.

Tax-exempt organizations, including qualifying nonprofits and government entities, can buy vehicles free of sales tax when the vehicle is used for official purposes. A valid exemption certificate must be presented to the seller or clerk; without it, standard tax applies regardless of exempt status.

Leased Vehicles

Lease tax works differently. For leases longer than 36 months, the leasing company collects sales tax from you on each monthly payment rather than taxing the full vehicle price up front. For leases of 36 months or shorter, the default is that the leasing company pays tax on the full acquisition price when it buys the vehicle, though it can apply for permission to collect tax on the monthly payments instead.14Colorado Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Topics – Leases

The rate on each lease payment reflects where the vehicle is primarily located during that payment period. Move mid-lease and the rate adjusts for future payments. A trade-in at the start of a lease is excluded from the taxable amount, just as in a purchase.

Annual Specific Ownership Tax

Beyond the one-time sales tax, Colorado charges an annual Specific Ownership Tax (SOT) each time you renew registration. It’s not a sales tax, but it catches buyers off guard because it can be substantial in the early years. SOT is based on the vehicle’s original taxable value and declines on a fixed schedule.15Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Taxes and Fees

For most passenger vehicles (Tax Class C):

  • Year 1: 2.10% of taxable value
  • Year 2: 1.50%
  • Year 3: 1.20%
  • Year 4: 0.90%
  • Years 5–9: 0.45%
  • Year 10 and beyond: flat $3

On a vehicle with a $40,000 taxable value, first-year SOT is $840. By year five it drops to $180. The taxable value is set when the vehicle is new and does not change with depreciation. For new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, the taxable value is 50% of MSRP rather than the full price, which roughly halves the SOT for those vehicles.16International Registration Plan, Inc. Electric Vehicle Credits and Fees

Colorado offers a state income tax credit for buying or leasing a new electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle. For tax year 2026, the Innovative Motor Vehicle Credit is $750.17Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. Vehicle Exchange Colorado (VXC) offers larger rebates for income-qualified buyers who trade in an older gas or diesel vehicle for an EV. Rebates can reach $9,000 for a new EV and $6,000 for a used one, with eligibility tied to household income below 80% of area median income and surrender of an older high-emitting vehicle. Applications go through the Colorado Energy Office.

EV owners also pay annual fees other vehicles don’t. A $60.05 annual EV registration fee applies to all electric vehicles. A road usage equalization fee phases in on top: for the 2026–2027 fiscal year, it’s $26 for fully electric vehicles and $13 for plug-in hybrids.19Alternative Fuels Data Center.
