Colorado Change of Address: DMV, Voter, and Federal Agencies

A Colorado change of address starts with your driver’s license: state law gives you 30 days from your move to notify the Division of Motor Vehicles, and missing that window is a $30 fine under C.R.S. 42-2-119.¹ The license is only the first stop. Vehicle registration, voter registration, any professional licenses, and several federal agencies each keep their own records, and none of them update automatically when you change one of the others.

Driver’s License and State ID

C.R.S. 42-2-119 covers anyone holding a Colorado driver’s license, minor driver’s license, instruction permit, or state ID card. Your written notice to the DMV has to include your old address, your new address, and the number on the license, permit, or ID.¹

You have three ways to do it:

Online through the myDMV portal, using your license or ID number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. This is the fastest option.²
By mail, using the Change of Address form (DR 2285), sent to the Division of Motor Vehicles at P.O. Box 173350, Denver, CO 80217-3350.³
In person at any driver’s license office, bringing your current license or ID.

Updating the record itself costs nothing. The DR 2285 form instructs you to write your new address on the back of your existing license as an interim solution.³ If you want a replacement card with the new address printed on the front, the duplicate card fee is $12.30.⁴

Missing the 30-day deadline is a class 2 petty offense with a flat $30 fine.¹ The larger risk is the mail you don’t get. Traffic citations and court notices sent to your old address can turn into missed court dates, and missed court dates can turn into bench warrants. An insurer may also push back on a claim if your policy lists an address you no longer live at, because address feeds directly into premium and risk calculations.

Vehicle Registration Is Separate

Changing your driver’s license address does not change your vehicle registration address. The DMV’s online tool says so directly.² Registration is handled by your county, not the state, which is why it lives on a different record.

Update it through the Vehicle Services tab in the myDMV portal, at a county kiosk if your county has one, or in person at your county motor vehicle office.⁵ Leaving it outdated causes two headaches worth avoiding: renewal notices go to the wrong place, and Colorado’s specific ownership tax is calculated by county of residence, so an old address can produce a wrong bill. If a traffic stop turns up a registration address that doesn’t match your license, expect questions.

Voter Registration

Colorado mails a ballot to every registered voter.⁶ If your registration still points to the old place, that’s where the ballot goes.

Update your registration at GoVoteColorado.gov using your Colorado driver’s license or state ID number. Your address also determines your precinct and, with it, which local races and ballot measures appear on your ballot.⁶ So the update isn’t only about getting the envelope; it’s about getting the right one.

Professional Licenses

If you hold a professional license through the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), your board almost certainly has its own address rule. Individual boards write these through administrative regulation. The State Board of Nursing, for example, requires written notice of an address change within 30 days.⁷ Boards covering healthcare providers, real estate agents, and contractors generally impose similar deadlines.

Consequences vary by board and can include disciplinary action, fines, or renewal problems. The practical risk is quieter: a bad address means you miss renewal notices and regulatory updates, and a license can lapse without you knowing. Most boards let you update through your DORA account online, but check your board’s rule, because some still require written notification.

Federal Agencies

USPS Mail Forwarding

Filing a change of address with the United States Postal Service forwards mail from your old address to your new one. Online submission at usps.com carries a $1.25 identity verification fee; filing in person at a post office is free.⁸ Temporary forwarding runs up to a year, which is usually enough time to update senders one by one. Do this first. It catches whatever you forget.

IRS

The IRS needs your current address for refunds, notices, and correspondence. File Form 8822 to report a new home address.⁹ If you file a return with the new address before the IRS processes the form, the return updates your record. If you’re not filing soon, send the form, especially if you’re mid-audit or on a payment plan.

Social Security and Medicare

Your Social Security card itself doesn’t need to be updated for an address change. If you receive Social Security or Medicare benefits, update your address through your my Social Security account online. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, contact your local Social Security office directly instead.¹⁰

Passport

A U.S. passport doesn’t need to be reissued when you move. Write the new address on the personal data page. There’s no requirement to notify the State Department.

Business Owners

If you run a business with an Employer Identification Number, file IRS Form 8822-B for a change in business mailing address or business location. If the move also changes your responsible party, you have to report that to the IRS within 60 days.¹¹

At the state level, update your principal office address and registered agent address through the Colorado Secretary of State’s business filing portal. A stale registered agent address is how businesses miss service of process, and missing service of process is how a manageable lawsuit becomes a default judgment.
