Connecticut PE License Renewal: Fees, Deadlines, and Penalties

A Connecticut PE license renewal is due every year by January 31, costs $285, and requires no continuing education. You renew through the Department of Consumer Protection’s online eLicensing system by confirming your information and paying the fee. Miss the deadline and your license lapses immediately, though you have a 30-day grace period to renew and up to five years to reinstate before you’d have to start the licensure process over.

When Your License Expires and What It Costs

Every Connecticut PE license expires on January 31 of the year following its issuance or most recent renewal.1Cornell Law School. Connecticut Agencies Regulations 20-300-11 – Renewals It’s an annual cycle, not biennial. The Department of Consumer Protection sends a notice before the expiration date, but the obligation to renew on time is yours whether or not the notice reaches you.

The current annual renewal fee for an individual PE is $285.2CT.gov. Professional Engineering Engineering firm registrations are separate and renew at $375 per year. If you also hold a land surveyor license, each credential renews on its own. The statute pegs the fee to the “professional services fee for class G” defined elsewhere in the General Statutes, so the amount can shift without changes to the licensing chapter itself.3Connecticut General Assembly. No Continuing Education Required

Connecticut is one of the few states that does not require any professional development hours, continuing education credits, or ongoing training to renew a PE license.4National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. CPC Board Settings Nothing to submit, nothing to attest to, no PDH log to keep. Renewal is purely administrative.

That surprises engineers used to the 30-PDH-per-biennium standard in other states. If you’re licensed elsewhere, you still have to satisfy those states’ rules for those licenses. Connecticut’s silence on CE covers only your Connecticut credential. And it doesn’t mean competence is unregulated: the Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors can still investigate complaints about incompetent practice.

How to Renew Online

Renewals go through the Department of Consumer Protection’s eLicensing system.2CT.gov. Professional Engineering Log into your account, confirm your personal and professional details, pay the $285 electronically, and you’ll get a confirmation. Because Connecticut doesn’t require CE documentation, there’s no upload step for transcripts or completion certificates. Once processed, the Department issues a renewal card.

If You Were Licensed Late in the Year

Engineers first licensed between November 1 and December 31 don’t expire on the very next January 31. The license carries to the January 31 after that, giving you more than a full year before your first renewal comes due.1Cornell Law School. Connecticut Agencies Regulations 20-300-11 – Renewals

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

Practice becomes illegal the moment your license expires on January 31, not when any grace period ends. If you don’t pay within 30 days after that expiration, the license is considered lapsed.1Cornell Law School. Connecticut Agencies Regulations 20-300-11 – Renewals The 30 days only preserve your ability to renew before the full reinstatement process kicks in; they don’t authorize you to keep working.

Once lapsed, you have five years to reinstate without going through initial licensure again. After five years, reinstatement is off the table and you’d have to file a new application under whatever requirements are in effect then.

Reinstating within the five-year window requires two things:

  • Back fees for every lapsed renewal period plus the current year, with any partial year counting as a full year.
  • A notarized letter documenting your engineering experience since you originally applied for licensure.

The bill adds up. At $285 a year, an engineer who let a license sit lapsed for three years would owe $1,140 for three lapsed years plus the current one before any administrative charges. During the lapse, your name is also removed from the February roster of licensed engineers, which can affect your ability to win contracts or seal documents.

Retired Status at a Reduced Fee

If you’re 65 or older and no longer practicing, you can keep your license on the books at a reduced renewal fee.3Connecticut General Assembly. Connecticut General Statutes Chapter 391 – Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors To qualify, submit a letter with your renewal application stating that you’re retired and accept the practice restriction that comes with it. You can’t perform engineering work or seal documents while holding the retired classification.5Cornell Law School. Connecticut Agencies Regulations 20-300-3b – License Retention for Non-Practicing Licensees

If you later want to come back, you can restore the license to full active status by submitting the appropriate paperwork and paying the fee difference.

Penalties for Practicing on a Lapsed License

Practicing engineering without a valid Connecticut license is a criminal offense. Anyone who knowingly violates any provision of the licensing chapter faces a fine of up to $500, up to three months in jail, or both.3Connecticut General Assembly. Connecticut General Statutes Chapter 391 – Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors That penalty reaches anyone who never had a license, anyone who let one lapse and kept working, and anyone who violated another requirement of the chapter.

The Board of Examiners can also take disciplinary action against a licensee, up to suspension or revocation. The collateral consequences often outweigh the statutory fine. Clients can void contracts, employers can terminate the relationship, and documents you sealed during an unlicensed period can be challenged. Renewing on time avoids all of it.
