You can check your Connecticut tax refund status online through the myconneCT portal or by calling the Department of Revenue Services’ automated phone line, both open 24 hours a day. Have three things ready: your Social Security Number, the tax year, and the exact whole-dollar amount of the refund you claimed. E-filed returns typically process within a few weeks; paper returns can take 10 to 12 weeks during filing season, and nothing will show up in either system until initial processing is done.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check Your Refund Online Through myconneCT
From the myconneCT welcome page, find the “Where’s my Refund?” link under the Individuals panel.2Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. myconneCT You’ll enter:
- Your Social Security Number. On a joint return, use whichever SSN appears first.
- The tax year of the return.
- The refund amount in whole dollars, with cents dropped. A refund of $875.50 is entered as $875.
The system matches all three fields against your filed return. If any one of them is off, the lookup fails, so pull up your actual return and read the refund figure from there instead of guessing.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check the Status of Your Income Tax Refund
Check Your Refund by Phone
The DRS runs an automated phone line around the clock. Call 860-297-5962 from anywhere, or 800-382-9463 if you’re in Connecticut but outside the Greater Hartford calling area. Enter your SSN and the whole-dollar refund amount, then press the pound sign.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check the Status of Your Income Tax Refund
Whether you use the phone or the portal, the same limit applies: neither will return a status until the DRS has finished the initial data entry on your return. Repeated checks won’t move a return through the queue any faster.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check the Status of Your Income Tax Refund
When Your Refund Should Be Ready
How you filed sets the timeline. E-filed returns move through the system substantially faster than paper. The DRS doesn’t publish a guaranteed turnaround, but most people who e-file and choose direct deposit see their refund within a few weeks.
Paper returns take 10 to 12 weeks during filing season because staff have to enter and verify the data by hand.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check the Status of Your Income Tax Refund Checking status before that window closes is pointless; the return simply isn’t in the system yet.
How Your Refund Arrives
You either get a direct deposit or a paper check. Direct deposit is faster, and the DRS recommends it. Once the refund processes, allow at least two business days for the deposit to land in your account.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check the Status of Your Income Tax Refund
A few situations force a paper check regardless of what you asked for:
- First-time Connecticut filers cannot receive a direct deposit. The DRS blocks it as an anti-fraud measure and issues a paper check automatically.3Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Federal/State Electronic Filing Handbook
- Refunds cannot be deposited into foreign bank accounts under federal banking rules, so a paper check is issued instead.
- If a direct deposit fails at your bank for any reason, the DRS generally reissues the refund as a paper check, which adds time to an already frustrating wait. Verify your routing and account numbers before you file.3Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Federal/State Electronic Filing Handbook
The DRS also reserves the right to issue a paper check on any refund, even one where you requested direct deposit. Paper checks go to the mailing address on your return, so update your address with the DRS before filing if you’ve moved.
Why Refunds Get Delayed
Errors on the Return
Simple mistakes are one of the more common causes of a stalled refund. Math errors, the wrong filing status, or missing schedules can trip the DRS’s automated review and route the return for manual examination, which adds time. E-filing through software that catches errors before submission is the best way to avoid this.
Identity Verification
The DRS operates a Refund Protection Program aimed at catching identity theft and fraudulent claims.4Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Refund Protection Program If your return is flagged, the DRS mails a notice asking you to verify your identity online by answering questions only the real taxpayer should know.
You need the actual notice to complete the verification, so don’t ignore DRS mail during tax season. Responding quickly clears the hold. Ignoring the notice freezes the refund indefinitely.4Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Refund Protection Program
When the State Keeps Part of Your Refund
If you owe money to the State of Connecticut, the DRS can apply your refund against that debt. State law lets the DRS credit an overpayment against tax you owe the state, and the same authority extends to unpaid municipal taxes, fines, and utility charges when the municipality has a collection agreement with the DRS.5Justia Law. Connecticut Code Title 12 – Section 12-739 Past-due child support and debts to other state agencies can also trigger an offset.
Connecticut cooperates with other states as well. If you owe income tax to another state or the District of Columbia, that state’s tax authority can ask the DRS to withhold your Connecticut refund to cover the debt.6Justia Law. Connecticut Code Title 12 – Section 12-35f When an offset is applied, the DRS sends you a notice showing which agency received the money and how much.
The DRS can also refer state debts to the federal Treasury Offset Program, which intercepts federal refunds to pay obligations like unpaid Connecticut taxes or past-due child support. Before that happens, the DRS sends a certified Notice of Intent to Offset. You have 60 days from the date of that notice to resolve the debt or contest it.7Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Federal Offset Program After the 60 days, recovering the money becomes much harder.
Interest on a Late Refund
Connecticut does pay interest on refunds that sit too long, but only after a grace period. For an overpayment on an original return, interest starts accruing on the 91st day after the filing deadline or the 91st day after you filed, whichever is later. The rate is two-thirds of one percent per month. For amended returns, the 90-day clock runs from the date you filed the amended return.8Justia Law. Connecticut Code Title 12 – Section 12-227
Talking to a Person at the DRS
The automated systems handle quick status checks well. If your refund is past the normal window, or if you’ve received a notice you don’t understand, you may need to reach a live representative. Call 860-297-5962 or 800-382-9463. TTY, TDD, and text telephone users can reach the DRS at 860-297-4911 through the 711 relay service. Once you have a myconneCT account, you can also submit questions electronically through the portal at portal.ct.gov/DRS.
