A fix-it ticket in California lets you clear a correctable vehicle violation for a $25 court fee instead of paying the full fine, which typically runs $192 to $233 depending on the offense.1California Courts. Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules You fix the problem, get an authorized person to sign a Certificate of Correction, and file it with the court along with the fee before your appearance date. Miss the deadline and the citation converts to a standard infraction with the full bail amount plus a possible civil assessment.
Which Violations Qualify
Vehicle Code Section 40610 covers correctable violations tied to registration, driver’s licenses, all-terrain vehicle safety certificates, and mechanical equipment.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40610 When one of these violations is the reason for the stop, the officer is required to issue a correctable notice unless a disqualifying condition applies. The citation itself will show whether the violation is correctable, usually as a checked box on the form.
An officer can write a standard citation instead if there’s evidence of fraud or persistent neglect, the defect creates an immediate safety hazard, or you’re unable or unwilling to fix it promptly.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40610 Motorcycle exhaust violations under Section 27151(a) are specifically excluded from the correction process.
Typical fix-it tickets fall into two buckets. Equipment problems include burned-out taillights, headlights, and turn signals; missing, damaged, or improperly mounted plates; and exhaust or muffler noise violations on non-motorcycle vehicles. Documentation problems include expired registration, failing to carry a driver’s license under Section 12951, and failing to carry proof of insurance.
Two nuances matter here. For a driver’s license charge, you have to show the court that you actually held a valid license at the time of the stop, not just that you got one afterward, and a court has discretion to deny dismissal on a third or later charge even if you produce a valid license.3California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 12951 Insurance works the same way: you have to prove coverage at the time of the citation, not that you bought a policy after being pulled over.4California Legislative Information. How Long You Have
The correction deadline is printed on the notice and cannot exceed 30 days from the date of the citation. All-terrain vehicle safety certificate violations get up to 90 days.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40610 The officer picks a specific window based on what’s reasonable for the defect. Your appearance date falls inside that window, and everything, signed proof and payment, must reach the court by then.
Getting the Correction Signed Off
Fixing the problem is only half of it. The court also needs a signed Certificate of Correction, which is usually printed on the back of your citation or available as a separate court form.5Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara. Certificate of Correction SC-8020 Without the signature, the court will not accept your proof.
Who can sign depends on what was cited:
- Equipment violations can be signed off by any peace officer, including CHP officers and local police or sheriff’s deputies.5Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara. Certificate of Correction SC-8020
- Brakes, lamps, smog devices, and mufflers must be certified by an inspection station licensed for that type of violation, not by an officer.
- Registration renewal can be verified by a DMV representative or a law enforcement officer.
- Driver’s license and insurance are usually verified when you present the documents to the court clerk with your proof.
Local police stations will generally inspect a repair without an appointment, but don’t leave it for the last day. Showing up close to closing time on the day your paperwork is due leaves no room for anything to go wrong.
Submitting Proof and Paying the Fee
Once the certificate is signed, file it with the court listed on the citation and pay a $25 transaction fee per violation.4California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40611 When valid proof is submitted, no additional bail is collected beyond that fee.1California Courts. Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules
Submission methods vary by court. Most accept proof by mail or at the traffic clerk’s window. Some, including the Los Angeles Superior Court, do not allow online or phone submission for correctable violations.6Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles. How Do I Submit a Proof of Corrections – Traffic Division Others offer an online option for certain vehicle code violations. Check your specific court before assuming. If you mail your proof, the court has to receive it by the due date, not just have it postmarked; send a check or money order for the $25 payable to the court.
What a Missed Deadline Costs
Skip the process and a $25 problem grows fast. The court treats an unresolved citation as a standard infraction and the full bail amount applies. A registration violation runs around $192; a driver’s license offense runs closer to $233.1California Courts. Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules On top of that, the court can add a civil assessment of up to $100 under Penal Code Section 1214.1 for failing to appear or pay.7California Legislative Information. California Penal Code 1214.1
Your license is also exposed. California no longer allows the DMV to suspend a license solely for unpaid tickets, but a willful failure to appear is different. The court can notify the DMV, which will send a pending suspension notice. If you don’t clear the failure to appear within 60 days, your license is suspended until you do.
If You’re From Out of State
Visiting drivers can still use the correction process. The Driver License Compact, the interstate agreement that shares traffic conviction information between states, does not cover non-moving violations like equipment citations, so a fix-it ticket resolved through correction should not be reported to your home state’s DMV.8CSG National Center for Interstate Compacts. Driver License Compact The practical hurdle is getting an authorized person to verify the repair from a distance. If a local officer won’t sign off, call the California court before your appearance date to ask about options rather than letting the deadline slip.
If You Hold a CDL
Federal rules generally bar states from masking or diverting traffic convictions off a commercial driver’s record, but 49 CFR Section 384.226 specifically exempts vehicle defect violations.9eCFR. 49 CFR 384.226 – Prohibition on Masking Convictions A CDL holder can use the fix-it process for equipment violations without conflicting with federal masking rules. The exemption doesn’t extend to moving violations.
Effect on Your Record and Insurance
A correctable violation you properly fix and dismiss does not add points to your California driving record, because the point system applies to moving violations and certain other specified offenses rather than to equipment and documentation issues cleared through correction. Because no points are assessed and the violation is dismissed, a successfully corrected ticket should not affect your insurance rates. Let it convert to a standard infraction and the conviction itself lands on your record, even if most equipment offenses still carry zero points.
One Change to Watch
Section 40610 carries a sunset clause repealing it on January 1, 2027.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40610 The Legislature has extended the provision before, but if you’re dealing with a citation in late 2026, confirm the statute is still in force before counting on the correction process.
