The Courtney Clenney murder case remains unresolved. The Miami OnlyFans model known online as Courtney Tailor has been held without bond in a Miami-Dade County jail since August 2022 on a second-degree murder charge in the stabbing death of her boyfriend, Christian Tobechukwu “Toby” Obumseli. What Happened on April 3, 2022
Obumseli, 27, was fatally stabbed inside the couple’s apartment in Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood. Clenney told investigators she threw the knife at Obumseli from about 10 feet away. Prosecutors dispute that account, saying the depth of the chest wound was inconsistent with a thrown blade.1Fox 13 Memphis. Why She Was Not Arrested for Four Months
No charges were filed at the scene. On the night of the stabbing, Clenney was involuntarily committed for a psychiatric evaluation under Florida’s Baker Act at the recommendation of her attorney and detectives.3CBS News Miami. U.S. Marshals and the Hawai’i Police Department arrested her without incident on August 10, 2022, in Laupahoehoe on the Big Island, on a Miami-Dade warrant for second-degree murder with a deadly weapon.4Hawai’i Police Department. Why She Remains Jailed Without Bond
Every attempt to secure release has failed. At a December 2022 hearing, the judge ordered her held without bond after prosecutors argued she was a flight risk, citing her OnlyFans income of more than $900,000 in 2020 and over $1.8 million in 2021.6CBS News Miami. Bond was denied again in November 2024 and December 2025.8Court TV. The Self-Defense Argument
Defense attorneys Frank Prieto and Sabrina Puglisi say Clenney was a domestic abuse victim who acted to protect herself. Prieto called the couple’s relationship “complicated” and “clearly toxic,” and said Clenney had removed Obumseli from the apartment about a week before his death over abuse allegations.10NBC News. At an October 2024 hearing, the defense played video of a man throwing knives at a pig carcass, and expert witness Dr. John Marraccini testified that the resulting wounds resembled Obumseli’s. Prosecutors have countered the self-defense narrative with a documented history of incidents in the couple’s roughly two-year relationship, which they described as “violent and toxic”:
- In July 2021, Las Vegas police responded to the Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino. Clenney admitted throwing a glass at Obumseli, was arrested for domestic battery, and told officers she “had thrown items at him before.”12NBC Miami. - On April 1–2, 2022, Miami police responded to a domestic disturbance at the apartment. Officers reported Clenney appeared intoxicated and had bruises on her arms and legs, but made no arrests. Obumseli’s family has rejected the self-defense claim. His brother, Jeffrey Obumseli, criticized the pace of the investigation and alleged “white privilege” was shielding Clenney. The Fight Over Privileged Communications
The defense has also alleged serious misconduct by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. In June 2024, Circuit Judge Laura Shearon Cruz ruled that prosecutors violated attorney-client privilege by accessing private communications between Clenney’s parents and their defense attorneys. The materials came from an iCloud warrant executed during a January 2024 raid on the parents’ Austin, Texas home, which yielded more than 4,000 messages, including an outline of the defense’s strategy for the murder case.15Miami Herald. Lead prosecutor Khalil Quinan admitted viewing a privileged document titled “Courtney Checklist of Things to Do—Privileged.docx.” In February 2025, a judge ruled the defense could depose him. Quinan withdrew from the case in March 2025, saying being deposed would make him a witness, and was replaced by original lead prosecutor Shawn Abuhoff.16Miami Herald. The defense has moved to disqualify the entire Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, arguing the office’s exposure to privileged strategy makes a fair trial impossible. Abuhoff and Chief Assistant State Attorney Kathleen Hoague have sworn they did not personally review the privileged communications. Separately, the defense has alleged prosecutors failed to disclose a neighbor witness and that responding officers ordered a civilian at the scene, Danny Del Valle, to delete photos and videos he had taken before police arrived. Charges Against Clenney’s Parents Dropped
Clenney’s parents, Deborah and Kim Clenney, were each charged with one count of unauthorized access to a computer belonging to Obumseli. Investigators alleged Courtney provided the laptop to them between the April 2022 stabbing and her August 2022 arrest.19CBS News Miami. The charges were dropped on July 11, 2024. Judge Cruz ruled that because the parents shared attorney Frank Prieto with their daughter, the text messages prosecutors had obtained were protected by attorney-client privilege and had to be excluded. The Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Alongside the criminal case, Obumseli’s family filed a wrongful death suit naming Clenney, the owner of the One Paraiso condo, the property management company, and the building’s security company. Family attorney Michael Haggard alleged that building management and security were aware of a “documented pattern of violence” by Clenney, citing six prior police calls to the unit, and failed to act.21NBC Miami. Why the Trial Keeps Being Delayed
The trial was first set for December 2025, then postponed after the lead prosecutor withdrew and both sides said they were not ready.22Miami Herald.
