Crystal Rogers Case: Disappearance, Conviction, and Appeals

Crystal Rogers, a 35-year-old mother of five, disappeared from Bardstown, Kentucky on the night of July 3, 2015. A decade later, in July 2025, a jury convicted her boyfriend Brooks Houck of murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison. Two other men connected to Houck were also convicted, but the Crystal Rogers case remains open in one important respect: her body has never been found.¹

The Night She Vanished

Rogers was last seen alive on the evening of July 3, 2015, with Brooks Houck, the father of one of her children. Houck told investigators the two went to his family’s farm on Paschal Ballard Lane that night and that he woke up the next morning to find her gone.²

Two days later, on July 5, her red Chevrolet Impala was found abandoned at the 14-mile marker on the Bluegrass Parkway. The tire was flat. Her keys were in the ignition, and her purse and phone were still inside.³ Her mother, Sherry Ballard, reported her missing that day. Prosecutors would eventually build the case as a “no body homicide.”²

The Nelson County Sheriff named Brooks Houck a suspect in October 2015, three months after Rogers vanished. That same month, his brother Nick Houck, then a Bardstown police officer, was fired for allegedly interfering with the investigation.² The FBI took over the investigation in August 2020. In January 2023, the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office appointed Hardin County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shane Young as special prosecutor.⁴

Who Was Convicted

A Nelson County grand jury returned indictments in September 2023. Brooks Houck was charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence and arrested on September 27, 2023, with bond set at $10 million. Joseph Lawson, one of Houck’s employees, was indicted for conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to tamper with physical evidence. His father, Steve Lawson, also a Houck employee, was charged in December 2023 with conspiracy to commit murder.²

Steve Lawson was tried separately. His trial ran from May 27 to May 30, 2025, and the jury convicted him of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence. Judge Charles Simms III sentenced him on August 6, 2025 to 17 years in prison with no chance of parole, with a concurrent five-year tampering sentence.⁵

Brooks Houck and Joseph Lawson were tried jointly in Warren County, where the case had been moved because of extensive pretrial publicity. The 10-day trial concluded on July 8, 2025. The jury found Houck guilty of murder and tampering with physical evidence, and Joseph Lawson guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and complicity to tampering with physical evidence.⁶

On September 17, 2025, Judge Simms sentenced Houck to life in prison for murder and five years for tampering. The judge noted that although some had requested life without parole, that option was “not permissible under Kentucky law” for the charges Houck faced.⁷ Under Kentucky law, Houck will be eligible for parole after serving 85 percent of his sentence. Joseph Lawson received 20 years for conspiracy and five years for tampering, to be served consecutively, for a total of 25 years.¹

At sentencing, Sherry Ballard addressed Houck directly: “Brooks Houck, you may have received a lifetime of prison; I have received a lifetime of grief and pain. You deserve yours; I don’t deserve mine.”⁶

How Prosecutors Proved a Murder Without a Body

With no body, no weapon, and no identified crime scene, prosecutors built the case from phone records, surveillance footage, witness testimony, and grand jury recordings. Their theory was that Houck killed Rogers at the family farm on the night of July 3, 2015 and enlisted the Lawsons to help dispose of evidence and move her car to the Bluegrass Parkway.

The motive prosecutors presented was that Houck wanted to avoid paying child support for his son with Rogers and to keep sole custody of the child. Unsealed court documents revealed he had begun an affair with another woman about a month before Rogers disappeared.⁸

Phone records showed movement from the Bardstown area toward the stretch of parkway where the Impala was found. Surveillance footage captured Houck’s truck arriving at and leaving the family farm the night of July 3.⁹ Rogers’ daughter, Kyleigh Fenwick, testified that the morning after her mother vanished, she found Houck sleeping alone in the bedroom he shared with Rogers, and he told her Rogers was with a cousin.

Grand jury recordings from 2023 captured Steve Lawson admitting he helped his son Joseph move Rogers’ car around the time she disappeared. Lawson testified that Houck had used a “keyword” and said he wanted Rogers “gone,” and that in exchange Houck promised him all of his drywall work.⁸

Prosecutors also presented evidence that Rosemary Houck, Brooks’ mother, had asked Danny Singleton whether he knew someone who could “get rid of” Rogers. Singleton testified he told her people would do it “for the right amount of money.” The prosecution alleged Rosemary had used a secondary phone during a suspicious gap in activity on her primary phone around the time of the disappearance.⁸ Prosecutors named both Nick Houck and Rosemary Houck as unindicted co-conspirators. Neither has been charged in Rogers’ death.¹⁰

The defense argued the case rested on “assumptions, suspicions, and speculation” and that no physical evidence tied Houck to a crime. Defense attorneys challenged the prosecution’s reading of the phone data, arguing it showed Houck traveling a different route than prosecutors claimed.⁹

The Unsolved Killing of Crystal’s Father

On the morning of November 19, 2016, Rogers’ father Tommy Ballard was shot and killed on family property near the Bluegrass Parkway while preparing for a hunting trip with his 12-year-old grandson. A single shot to the chest killed him instantly.¹¹ Ballard had founded “Team Crystal,” a community group dedicated to finding his daughter, and had pushed publicly for answers.

No one has been charged in his death. During a 2023 hearing in Brooks Houck’s case, special prosecutor Shane Young stated that investigators were examining a rifle Nick Houck had purchased using a fake name. Young said the weapon was in the state’s possession, was the same caliber as the gun used to kill Ballard, and had matched four out of five forensic criteria tested so far.¹² The FBI continues to offer a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.¹¹

Appeals

All three convicted men have challenged their convictions. Brooks Houck filed a 69-page appeal with the Kentucky Supreme Court in January 2026, arguing he should be acquitted for insufficient evidence or granted a new trial. The appeal cited the absence of a murder weapon, a body, or an identified crime scene, and alleged several judicial errors: the judge’s refusal to recuse himself, the decision to try Houck jointly with Joseph Lawson, the failure to strike certain jurors, and the admission of prejudicial hearsay.¹³

In May 2026, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman filed a response brief asking the state supreme court to uphold the conviction. Coleman’s brief stated: “A loving mother of five doesn’t just walk away and vanish. But that is what Brooks Houck would have this Court believe happened. That’s because he killed Crystal.”¹⁴ No oral argument date has been scheduled.

Joseph Lawson filed a separate 88-page appeal arguing his trial was “fundamentally unfair,” chiefly because the judge refused to sever his case from Houck’s. The appeal contends that being tried alongside Houck let the jury hear evidence that would not have been admissible in a standalone trial. Lawson also claims his father Steve provided “ever-shifting” narratives that were fed to him by detectives. Prosecutors had until June 15, 2026 to respond.¹⁵ Steve Lawson has also filed an appeal.¹³

Nick Houck’s Perjury Charge

On June 4, 2026, Nick Houck was arrested on a perjury charge. Kentucky State Police allege he made false statements during a period spanning July 2015 to August 2023. Authorities have not specified whether the charge is directly connected to the Rogers investigation. His arraignment was scheduled for June 18, 2026.¹⁶ Nick Houck was repeatedly identified as an unindicted co-conspirator during his brother’s trial and was fired from the Bardstown Police Department in 2015 for allegedly interfering in the case.¹⁰

Her Body Has Never Been Found

Despite years of searches across multiple properties and three convictions, Crystal Rogers’ remains have not been recovered. The FBI continues to seek information from the public through its Louisville Field Office, asking anyone with knowledge to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit tips online.³
