Crystal Rogers Case: Investigation, Convictions, and Legacy

The Crystal Rogers case is the decade-long Kentucky investigation into the July 2015 disappearance of a 35-year-old Bardstown mother of five, which ended in 2025 with the murder conviction of her boyfriend Brooks Houck and the conspiracy convictions of two other men, even though her body has never been found.

The Night She Disappeared

Crystal Rogers was last seen alive on the evening of July 3, 2015, with Brooks Houck, her boyfriend and the father of her youngest child. Houck told investigators the two had been at his family’s farm with their son that night, and that when he woke up the next morning, she was gone.¹

When friends and family could not reach her on July 3 or 4, her mother, Sherry Ballard, filed a missing person’s report on July 5.² That same day, Rogers’ maroon Chevrolet Impala was found abandoned on the Bluegrass Parkway near the 14-mile marker, with a flat tire and her keys, purse, and cellphone still inside.³ On July 6, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office publicly identified Houck as the last person to have seen her alive.

A Decade of Investigation

The case sat with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police for years before federal agents took over. Retired detective Jon Snow, one of the early investigators, later said a July 8, 2015, interview with Houck was when he began to suspect him. During that interview, Houck made phone calls to Steven Lawson and to his brother, Nick Houck, that Snow described as sounding “scripted.”⁴

Rogers’ father, Tommy Ballard, ran a community search group called “Team Crystal” and became a channel for witnesses who feared talking directly to police. Snow later credited him as a vital “buffer zone” for the investigation.⁴

The FBI officially took over in August 2020. Federal agents searched the homes of Brooks and Nick Houck, the Houck family farm, and a storage facility where Rogers’ vehicle had been kept. In August 2021, the FBI and Nelson County Sheriff searched three properties in the Woodlawn Springs subdivision where Houck had built homes, recovering items described as “potentially relevant.” More searches followed in October 2022 on Houck family land and in September 2024 at a Bardstown house previously sold by Nick Houck.¹

The White Buick and the Circumstantial Case

One of the most significant pieces of physical evidence was a white Buick LeSabre owned by Anna Whitesides, the paternal grandmother of Brooks and Nick Houck. On the night of July 3, 2015, raccoon hunters spotted a similar white car parked on a gravel road near the Houck farm, with a fleece jacket and water bottle inside.⁵ Surveillance video from a nearby home captured an unidentified car arriving around 3:30 a.m. and leaving around 3:45 a.m. on July 4.⁶

In May 2016, a cadaver dog named Ranger alerted to the scent of human remains near the trunk of the Buick during a search at a Louisville police impound lot. Investigators found a hair in the trunk that matched the color and characteristics of Rogers’ hair, but an FBI lab test failed to produce a DNA profile from it.⁷ No blood, bodily fluids, or tissue were found inside the vehicle.⁵

How the family tried to get rid of the car mattered too. On April 28, 2016, Tommy Ballard posted publicly on social media asking about a white Buick. Four days later, Nick Houck and Whitesides brought the vehicle to a Louisville dealership. A sales manager testified that the pair refused to let anyone look inside or hand over the keys before a deal was reached. The dealership declined, but the car was sold to another dealer.⁶ Police later recovered the vehicle from an impound lot after Whitesides claimed she had already sold it when officers arrived with a search warrant.⁵

The Murder of Tommy Ballard

On November 19, 2016, sixteen months after his daughter vanished, Tommy Ballard was shot and killed on family property adjacent to the Bluegrass Parkway while preparing for a hunting trip with his 12-year-old grandson. A single shot struck him in the chest.⁸

No one has been charged. Kentucky State Police continue to investigate, and prosecutors have scrutinized a rifle that Nick Houck allegedly purchased using a fake name. The gun is the same caliber as the weapon used in the killing and matches four of the five criteria investigators use for comparison.⁹ The FBI offers a reward of up to $10,000 for information, and the Ballard family has increased its own reward to $50,000.¹⁰

Who Was Charged and Convicted

Three men were prosecuted for Rogers’ death: Brooks Houck, Joseph Lawson, and Joseph’s father, Steven Lawson.

Steven Lawson

Steven Lawson was tried first. A four-day trial ended on May 30, 2025, with a guilty verdict on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence.¹¹ He was the only defendant to testify, admitting that he and his son helped move Rogers’ car at Brooks Houck’s request and that he adjusted the driver’s seat to make it appear Rogers had been the last person driving. He denied knowing of any plan to kill her.¹² Family members testified he was motivated by money and the promise of drywall jobs from Houck.

On August 6, 2025, Judge Charles Simms III sentenced him to 17 years in prison with no possibility of parole. The sentence consisted of 17 years for conspiracy and 5 years for tampering, served concurrently as the jury recommended.¹¹

Brooks Houck and Joseph Lawson

Houck and Joseph Lawson were tried together in a 10-day trial moved from Nelson County to Bowling Green in Warren County after Judge Simms determined that pretrial publicity had made it impossible to seat an impartial jury locally. The change of venue was ordered on October 7, 2024.¹³ Simms also banned cameras, cellphones, and recording devices from the courtroom, citing a “circuslike atmosphere.”¹⁴

The prosecution, led by special prosecutor Shane Young, built its case entirely on circumstantial evidence. Prosecutors argued that Houck lured Rogers away from her home on the night of July 3 by promising a “romantic, kid-free” evening that never existed. Cell phone records showed her phone was powered off at 9:27 p.m. that night, and prosecutors alleged that after leaving his family farm, Houck spent 15 to 20 minutes at the My Old Kentucky Home State Park campground parking lot.¹⁵ The case also drew on witness testimony about Houck’s controlling behavior toward Rogers, the evidence surrounding the white Buick, and the family’s alleged pattern of obstruction, including the secret recording of grand jury proceedings.¹⁶

Prosecutors traced the origin of the conspiracy to an incident about two weeks before Rogers vanished, when Rosemary Houck, Brooks’ mother and an unindicted co-conspirator, allegedly asked a worker named Danny Singleton if he knew someone who could help her “get rid of Crystal.” A grand jury witness later testified that Rosemary “took pleasure in Rogers’ disappearance” and was overheard saying that “Rogers should have disappeared long before she did, and now that she is gone, the child will be raised right.”¹⁷

Defense attorney Steve Schroering argued the case was built on “assumptions, theories and guesses,” pointing to the absence of a body, a confession, a murder weapon, or an identified crime scene.¹⁵

On July 8, 2025, the jury returned guilty verdicts against both men. Houck was convicted of murder (as a principal or accomplice) and tampering with physical evidence. Joseph Lawson was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence.¹⁸

On September 17, 2025, Simms sentenced Houck to life in prison for murder plus five years for tampering. Joseph Lawson received 20 years for conspiracy and 5 years for tampering, served consecutively for a total of 25 years.¹⁸ Under Kentucky law, Houck is eligible for parole after serving 85 percent of his sentence.¹⁹

At sentencing, Sherry Ballard addressed Houck directly. “Did she beg for her life? Did she feel any pain?” she asked. “Tell me where my daughter is. That’s your forgiveness.”²⁰ She pledged to attend every parole hearing and to “bring an army” to keep him behind bars.²¹

Appeals

In January 2026, Houck filed a 69-page appeal with the Kentucky Supreme Court seeking to overturn his conviction. The appeal argues that Judge Simms should have recused himself over a 2017 comment in an unrelated custody case in which he said he was “astonished” that anyone would want a relationship with Houck, calling him “the prime suspect in the disappearance and presumed death of his previous girlfriend.” It also challenges the joint trial with Joseph Lawson, the admission of hearsay from several witnesses, the failure to strike four jurors who knew of Steven Lawson’s prior conviction, and the sufficiency of the evidence.²²

On May 6, 2026, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman filed a brief urging the Supreme Court to uphold the conviction. “A loving mother of five doesn’t just walk away and vanish,” Coleman wrote. “But that is what Brooks Houck would have this Court believe happened. That’s because he killed Crystal.”²³ Houck has requested oral argument, but no hearing date or ruling timeline has been announced. Joseph Lawson filed his own appeal in April 2026, and Steven Lawson is appealing as well.¹⁹

Nick and Rosemary Houck

Nick Houck, Brooks’ brother and a former Bardstown police officer, was fired from the Bardstown Police Department in 2015 for interfering with the investigation and for failing a polygraph.²⁴ Prosecutors named him an unindicted co-conspirator during the trials, and Snow said investigators “firmly believe that Nick is tied into this and involved in it.”⁴

On June 4, 2026, Kentucky State Police arrested Nick Houck on a charge of first-degree perjury, a Class D felony. A Nelson County grand jury indictment alleges he made false statements under oath between July 15, 2015, and April 2023 during official court proceedings.²⁴ He pleaded not guilty at his June 18, 2026, arraignment and was released on $25,000 bond with a dusk-to-dawn curfew.²⁵

Rosemary Houck, the family farm’s owner, was also designated an unindicted co-conspirator. Prosecutors alleged the conspiracy “started with Rosemary” and pointed to suspicious gaps in her cellphone activity around the time of the disappearance. She has not been charged.¹⁷

The Crystal Rogers Act

The case produced legislation in Kentucky. House Bill 305, named the “Crystal Rogers Act,” was introduced to address the illegal recording of secret grand jury proceedings, a tactic prosecutors said the Houck family had used during the investigation. The bill passed the Kentucky House 93-0 in February 2026 and the Senate 38-0 in March 2026. Governor Andy Beshear signed it into law on April 13, 2026.²⁶

The law prohibits knowingly recording testimony or evidence presented during grand jury proceedings and bars the disclosure or dissemination of such material. Recording is a Class A misdemeanor; disclosure is a Class D felony. Public servants who violate the law face penalties one class more severe.²⁶

Still Missing

Crystal Rogers’ body has never been recovered. The FBI’s Louisville Field Office continues to seek information from the public to help locate her remains and maintains an active tip line.³ Nelson County Sheriff Ramon Pineiroa has said the search continues despite the convictions.²⁷

In November 2023, Sherry Ballard, as administrator of Rogers’ estate, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Brooks Houck in Nelson County, seeking damages for funeral expenses, lost earnings, Rogers’ pain and suffering before her death, and other losses.²⁸ In December 2025, State Farm Fire and Casualty Company intervened, arguing that Houck’s renter’s insurance policy does not cover intentional acts. The court granted State Farm’s motion to participate in discovery.²⁹
