The Pangea Real Estate Connection

Tenant complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau in early 2026 describe CYM Living as a rebrand of Pangea. One April 2026 complaint states that when the company “had a brand switch and started going by CYM Living they launched a new resident portal.” A tenant who moved in during 2021 described reporting maintenance problems to Pangea for years before the name change, then continuing to report the same issues to CYM Living. Another complaint refers to a property manager “employed by CYM Living / Pangea,” treating the names as interchangeable.8BBB. Pangea, founded by Al Goldstein, has a documented history of aggressive eviction practices. A Chicago Reader analysis of Cook County eviction court data from 2007 to 2018 found that Pangea filed more than 9,000 eviction cases against its tenants since 2009, taking as many people to court as the next four largest landlords combined. Between 2013 and 2017, the company filed eviction cases against roughly 17 percent of its tenants each year. In 2018 alone, it filed 1,137 eviction cases, and Cook County records showed that 60 to 70 percent of tenants served with those filings were ultimately evicted.2Chicago Reader. The Metropolitan Tenants Organization reported receiving more calls about Pangea than any other Chicago landlord, with frequent complaints about maintenance disrepair and unexpected water-billing fees.2Chicago Reader. Pangea Has Taken Thousands to Eviction Court A separate class action alleged that Pangea misled tenants into leasing problem apartments, ignored complaints, and threatened those who objected.9Legal Newsline. Of the total, 161 complaints were marked “Answered” by the business but not resolved to the consumer’s satisfaction; only 21 were marked “Resolved.”8BBB. CYM Living LLC BBB Complaints

The habitability complaints are specific. One tenant reported a ceiling collapse that left debris and dripping water. Another described urine leaking from a bathroom ceiling because of a corroded pipe from the upstairs unit. Multiple tenants cited ongoing roach, rodent, and raccoon infestations, with one attributing a roach problem to maintenance staff bringing in an appliance from an already-infested unit.10BBB. If You Rent From CYM Living in Chicago

Many of the conditions tenants have described fall under Chicago’s Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance, the city’s rental housing framework since 1986.12City of Chicago. Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance The ordinance prohibits landlords from retaliating against tenants who report code violations or request repairs. If a tenant engaged in that protected activity within the year before a landlord took adverse action, the law creates a presumption of retaliation. Tenants who prove retaliation can recover up to two months’ rent or double their actual damages, whichever is greater, plus attorney’s fees.13American Legal Publishing. Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 5-12

Illinois law requires at least a five-day notice before an eviction can proceed for unpaid rent, and tenants have “pay and stay” rights in those cases.14Illinois Legal Aid Online. Landlord Tenant Laws City-level enforcement against landlords for building code violations is limited: criminal charges are rare, and Chicago does not license landlords, which restricts officials’ ability to bar problem operators from the market.15Injustice Watch. Code Enforcement Chicago Lackluster One boundary worth flagging: the Coe suit is an employment case, not a tenant case, so its outcome will not directly resolve any rental dispute a resident may have with the company.
