Dial 911 when someone’s life, safety, or property is in immediate danger: crimes in progress, serious injuries, fires, and medical emergencies. DPD’s stated goal is to reach Priority 1 emergency calls within eight minutes, though actual response times run higher in some parts of the city.

Mental Health Crises

Filing a Report Without Calling
Some reports don’t require a phone call at all. DPD’s Citizen Online Reporting System handles crimes like credit card abuse and identity theft. Anything involving violence, a suspect still in the area, or evidence that needs to be collected on scene should be reported by phone or in person.
Information to Have Ready
What you give the dispatcher shapes how fast officers can respond. Before dialing, note the exact street address or the nearest intersection; a business name or landmark works if you can’t find a sign. For vehicles, get the make, model, color, and license plate, or as much of the plate as you can see. For descriptions of people, focus on what a dispatcher can relay right now: clothing, approximate height, and direction of travel.
Once the call is logged, you’ll receive an incident number. Write it down. That number is what you’ll need later to pull the report, check on an investigation, or request documentation.
