Dan Crenshaw Lawsuit Threat Against Shawn Ryan: The Demand Letter

Representative Dan Crenshaw’s lawsuit threat against Shawn Ryan took the form of a December 9, 2025, legal demand letter from Crenshaw’s attorneys accusing the podcast host of defamation and demanding a retraction, a public apology, and that Ryan stop talking about him. Ryan refused all three demands, and as of mid-2026 no lawsuit has been filed in any court.1The National Desk. Podcast Host Shawn Ryan Says Rep. Dan Crenshaw Threatened to Sue Him

What Ryan Said About Crenshaw

Shawn Ryan, a former Navy SEAL and CIA contractor who hosts the Shawn Ryan Show, used his podcast to question how Crenshaw’s personal wealth grew during his years in Congress. Ryan alleged that Crenshaw “trades stocks while having access to classified and non-public information” and said Crenshaw’s net worth had reached “millions” on a congressional salary of $174,000.2Houston Chronicle. The Instagram Message at the Center of the Dispute

Crenshaw replied to Ryan privately through an Instagram direct message. It read: “Hey Shawn, you have the ability to contact your fellow Team Guy if you’ve got a problem with me or have questions about how I’m getting ‘rich.’ Some of my boys at 6 told me about your indirect swipe at me. From the comment you made, it sounds like you have some believes that are based on trendy narratives instead of facts.”4KTXS. Podcast Host Shawn Ryan Says Rep. Dan Crenshaw Threatened to Sue Him

Ryan read “my boys at 6,” an apparent reference to SEAL Team 6, as a physical threat and said so publicly on his show. Crenshaw rejected that interpretation on X: “Sorry Shawn, but it is not believable that a fellow SEAL actually read this message and believed I was threatening to ‘whoop his ass.'”1The National Desk. The Demand Letter and Ryan’s Response

The December 9, 2025, letter from Crenshaw’s attorneys alleged that Ryan had defamed the congressman by characterizing the Instagram message as a threat of assault. It demanded that Ryan remove the content from his show, issue a public apology, and stop discussing Crenshaw.5Happy Scribe. Immediate Release: Rep. The Failed Tennessee Meeting

Crenshaw and Ryan agreed to meet in person in Tennessee on January 2, 2026. The sitdown collapsed. Ryan said Crenshaw refused to sign a waiver. Crenshaw told it the other way, saying Ryan “nixed the interview because he knew it wasn’t going to go well for him” and “got scared.”6Austin American-Statesman. Why Ryan Said He Read the Message as a Threat

Ryan tied his reading of “my boys at 6” to an earlier Crenshaw moment. On February 24, 2025, after a GB News interview in which Crenshaw criticized Tucker Carlson’s opposition to U.S. aid to Ukraine, Crenshaw was recorded on a hot mic saying of Carlson: “If I ever meet him, I’ll fucking kill him.”7Politico. Did Dan Crenshaw Get Rich in Congress Sales were boosted when the National Republican Congressional Committee spent approximately $394,000 to purchase over 25,000 copies shortly after the book’s April 2020 release. Campaign finance experts at the time said the arrangement was likely legal because the Federal Election Commission’s ban on personal use of campaign funds does not apply to party committees, though the Campaign Legal Center noted it effectively routed party money to an individual member.11Dallas Morning News. There are compliance issues on the disclosure side, though not the kind Ryan has alleged. Crenshaw’s 2024 annual report, filed on August 14, 2024, listed two 2023 stock purchases disclosed well past the STOCK Act’s 45-day deadline: a $15,001 to $50,000 purchase of a multi-well oil project on July 1, 2023, and a $1,001 to $15,000 purchase of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF on March 20, 2023, with the longest delay reaching 513 days.12Pelosi Tracker. Where Things Stand

No lawsuit has been filed. Ryan continues to discuss Crenshaw on his show. The dispute is now folded into a larger reversal for Crenshaw: on March 3, 2026, Texas state Representative Steve Toth defeated him in the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District, 57 percent to 39 percent, despite Crenshaw outraising Toth by $1.3 million.14The Texan.
