The Dane County wheel tax is a $28 annual vehicle registration fee charged on most cars and light trucks kept in the county, and it rises to $40 for any registration beginning on or after May 1, 2026.1Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee (Wheel Tax) You pay it to the Wisconsin DMV at the same time you renew your plates, on top of the $85 state registration fee. Every dollar collected must go toward transportation purposes such as road maintenance, bridge repairs, and public transit.2Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Statutes 341.35 – Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee
Who Has to Pay
The fee applies to automobiles, autocycles, and trucks registered at a gross weight of 8,000 pounds or less that are customarily kept in Dane County.1Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee (Wheel Tax) That covers most personal cars and light pickups.
Several categories do not owe the fee: motorcycles, mopeds, buses, motor homes, low-speed vehicles, trailers, trucks over 8,000 pounds, and dual-purpose farm trucks. Certain license plate types are also exempt:
- Antique plates
- Collector plates (though “Collector Special” plates still owe the fee)
- Historic Military Vehicle plates
- Hobbyist plates
- Medal of Honor plates
- Ex-Prisoner of War plates issued without a registration fee
- Any special plate issued to a farm truck, dual-purpose farm truck, or motor home
One rule worth knowing: if you replace a vehicle for which you already paid the current year’s wheel tax, the replacement does not owe the fee again for that registration period.2Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Statutes 341.35 – Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee
The May 2026 Increase
The rate goes from $28 to $40 for any registration beginning on or after May 1, 2026.1Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee (Wheel Tax) If your renewal date falls before May 1, you pay $28. If it falls on or after that date, you pay $40. The registration period is set by the state schedule already assigned to your vehicle, so you cannot renew early to lock in the lower amount.
City Fees That Stack on Top
Wisconsin law lets both a municipality and its county impose a wheel tax on the same vehicle.2Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Statutes 341.35 – Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee Several communities inside Dane County charge their own fee on top of the county’s:
- Madison: $40
- Fitchburg: $40
- Village of Oregon: $40
- Sun Prairie: $30
- Lodi: $20
A Madison resident renewing after May 1, 2026 will owe $40 to the county plus $40 to the city, for $80 in local wheel taxes on top of the $85 state fee.1Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee (Wheel Tax) If your community is not on the list above, you pay only the county portion.
How Your Location Is Determined
The fee is based on where the vehicle is “customarily kept,” not necessarily your mailing address. The DMV uses the municipality or county of domicile listed in its title database; if no municipality is on file, the owner’s post-office address controls.3Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Administrative Code Trans 126 – Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee If you have moved into or out of Dane County, or between a city that charges its own fee and one that doesn’t, update the “kept in” field through the DMV’s online portal so you’re billed correctly.4Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Update or Verify Vehicle Kept In Information
Listing a false address to avoid the fee is a crime. Providing a fictitious name, address, or vehicle location on a registration application is punishable by a fine of up to $200, up to six months in jail, or both.5Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Statutes 341.60 – Fraudulent Application for Registration or License
How You Pay
You do not pay Dane County directly. The wheel tax is collected by the Wisconsin DMV as part of your regular registration renewal, and the full amount is required to issue or renew a plate. There is no partial-year proration. Renewal notices go out at least one month before your plate expires, by mail or electronic notification, and you can renew online, by mail, at a DMV service center, or through an authorized third-party agent.6Wisconsin Department of Transportation. It Isn’t Deductible on Your Federal Return
The IRS allows a personal property tax deduction only when the tax is based on the value of the property and charged annually.7Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes The Dane County wheel tax is a flat amount, the same for every qualifying vehicle regardless of value, so it does not meet the IRS’s ad valorem requirement and cannot be deducted on your federal return.
