Bruck vanished after a Halloween party in Frenchtown Township, Monroe County, on October 26, 2014, and the Daniel Clay and Chelsea Bruck murder case was broken nearly two years later by a DNA match pulled from the handmade Poison Ivy costume she wore the night she was killed.

The Night Chelsea Bruck Disappeared

She wore a Poison Ivy costume she had sewn herself: a purple wig, black leggings, and a leaf-covered top.1People. How a New Michigan DNA Law Identified Daniel Clay

Investigators pulled DNA from inside Bruck’s costume and ran the profile through a national database. For more than a year, nothing came back. The match came from an unrelated arrest.

On May 10, 2016, Daniel Clay was arrested for stealing a backpack containing tattooing equipment. Under a Michigan law that took effect in July 2015, police could collect DNA from anyone arrested on a felony charge at the time of arrest, rather than waiting for a conviction. Clay’s sample went to the Michigan State Police crime lab, which matched it to the profile from Bruck’s costume. Monroe County Prosecutor William Paul Nichols later called the new DNA law the “difference-maker” in the case, noting that Clay had no prior felony convictions and his DNA had never been in the system.4Monroe News. The Trial

The case was tried in Monroe County Circuit Court in May 2017. Chief Assistant Prosecutor Michael Roehrig led the state’s case; defense attorney Russell Smith represented Clay.

Roehrig argued Clay sexually assaulted Bruck and then beat her to death. The state built on three pieces of physical evidence: the blunt force trauma to her face, blood on the inside of her costume, and the torn straps and cut-out crotch panel.10WDIV-TV (ClickOnDetroit). • Insufficient evidence: the panel found “sufficient evidence of record that Chelsea’s injuries were not accidental.”
  • Unlawful DNA retention: the DNA match occurred 55 days after Clay’s prior arrest, within the 60-day legal window for retaining DNA samples, making the evidence admissible.
  • Denial of counsel: after reviewing the interview footage, the court determined Clay never clearly asked for an attorney and wanted to tell his side.
  • Pretrial publicity: rejected.
  • Prejudicial photographs: Clay argued crime-scene photos should have been shown in black and white rather than color; the court rejected that as well.
