Dan Schneider, the former Nickelodeon writer and producer behind iCarly, Victorious, Zoey 101, and other hit children’s shows, has faced years of allegations from former staff and child actors involving verbal abuse, a hostile workplace, unwanted massage requests, and content that critics say sexualized minors. The Dan Schneider allegations first drew wide public attention when a 2000 discrimination claim was settled quietly, resurfaced in Jennette McCurdy’s 2022 memoir, and became a national story in March 2024 with the release of the docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. What He’s Accused Of
The accusations against Schneider fall into three broad categories.
The first is verbal abuse and a hostile work environment. The second involves conduct toward female writers and staff. In 2000, former Amanda Show writer Jenny Kilgen filed a gender discrimination and hostile-workplace claim against Storybook Productions, alleging that Schneider persistently requested massages from female writers and pressured staff to perform embarrassing tasks for money. The third category involves content and conduct around child actors: scenes viewers say sexualized minors, a pattern of foot-related jokes and imagery across his shows, and social media posts from the shows’ accounts soliciting foot photos from young fans. Schneider has called the foot allegations “ridiculous,” saying children find feet “goofy and funny.”8Complex. The Named Accusers
Several former Nickelodeon actors and employees have spoken publicly.
Jennette McCurdy. In her 2022 memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died, the former iCarly and Sam & Cat star described an abusive figure she called “the Creator,” widely reported to be Schneider. McCurdy alleged that the Creator pressured her to drink alcohol while she was underage, offering a whiskey-based drink and saying it would give the “wholesome” iCarly cast “a little edge.” She also described unwanted shoulder massages at work and said he demanded bikinis be included in her wardrobe fittings. McCurdy also alleged that after Sam & Cat was canceled, Nickelodeon offered her $300,000 as a “thank-you gift” on the condition she never speak publicly about her experiences, particularly regarding the Creator. Alexa Nikolas. The former Zoey 101 actor, who joined the show at age 12, has said Schneider insisted on being present during her wardrobe fittings, sitting on a chair outside the curtain while she tried on costumes made up mostly of very short skirts. She alleged he asked the wardrobe artist for the Polaroids taken of her in character and handpicked miniskirts so short that costume designers cut biker shorts to fit underneath.10Page Six. Drake Bell. The former Drake & Josh star appeared in Quiet on Set to identify himself publicly for the first time as the minor abused by Nickelodeon dialogue coach Brian Peck. Bell described the abuse as “extensive” and “brutal” and said it led to years of “self-destruction and self-loathing.”12NBC News. The Brian Peck and Jason Handy Convictions
Two convicted sex offenders worked on Schneider’s Nickelodeon productions. Neither was accused of being aided by Schneider, but their presence on his sets became a central concern of Quiet on Set.
Brian Peck, an acting and dialogue coach on All That and The Amanda Show, pleaded no contest in 2004 to two counts of child abuse. Jason Michael Handy, a production assistant on The Amanda Show and Cousin Skeeter, pleaded no contest in 2004 to lewd acts on a child, distributing sexually explicit material, and child sexual exploitation. Police found more than 1,700 images of children in compromising positions and a personal diary containing admissions of pedophilia at his residence. He was sentenced to six years in prison and arrested again in 2014 in North Carolina on charges of indecent liberties with a child and sex offender registry violations.16Yahoo Entertainment. How Nickelodeon Handled It
Complaints about Schneider surfaced internally well before his 2018 departure. A 2013 investigation into the set of Sam & Cat found Schneider had contributed to “toxicity” on the production. As a result, he was barred from being on set with actors and moved to a separate room, where he watched footage on monitors and relayed notes through an assistant director.3Los Angeles Times. On March 26, 2018, Nickelodeon and Schneider issued a joint statement saying they had “agreed to not extend the current deal,” framing the split as mutual. Reporting at the time indicated multiple staff complaints had been filed and that Schneider had long operated under what Deadline described as “a cloud of suspicion over the treatment of some younger stars.”17Deadline. Schneider’s Response
Two days after Quiet on Set premiered, Schneider posted a roughly 20-minute video conversation with former iCarly actor BooG!e on YouTube. He offered what he called a “pretty strong apology” while pushing back on parts of the documentary.
He admitted asking employees for massages was “wrong” and said he was “embarrassed” to have done it. He acknowledged being aggressive on set, snapping at people under production pressure, and described himself as “cocky,” “over-ambitious,” and “sometimes just straight-up rude and obnoxious.” He said he wished he had hired licensed therapists to support child actors on his sets.18Variety. Schneider denied intentionally sexualizing young performers. He said every joke “was written for a kid audience, because kids thought they were funny,” and that all content, costumes, and dialogue had been “carefully scrutinized by dozens of involved adults, and approved by the network.”18Variety. The Defamation Lawsuit
In March 2024, shortly after the documentary aired, Schneider filed a defamation lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against Warner Bros. Discovery, Maxine Productions, Sony Pictures Television, and Quiet on Set producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz.20Deadline. He called the series a “hit job” that damaged his legacy and reputation.
In his complaint, Schneider stated he “never sexually abused a child, nor has he been charged or convicted with sexually abusing a child.”21BBC. The defendants moved to dismiss under California’s anti-SLAPP statute, which is meant to block lawsuits targeting protected speech. On November 22, 2024, Judge Ashfaq G. Chowdhury denied the motion. The judge wrote that the case was “manifestly not a case brought by Schneider on frivolous grounds, simply to harass defendants,” noting that “defamation can be implied” and that a “reasonable viewer might conclude” the documentary makes “damning implications about his conduct.”22Hollywood Reporter. Where Things Stand
Schneider has not been charged with any crime, and no law enforcement investigation into his personal conduct with minors has been publicly reported. His legal exposure runs the other direction: the defamation suit he brought against the documentary’s producers. His professional footprint since 2018 has been limited to a co-creator credit on the 2020 series Danger Force and writing and producing credits on an upcoming Henry Danger movie.2People.
