Danielle Houchins: 1996 Cold Case Solved by DNA and Suspect ID

The 1996 murder of Danielle Houchins was solved in 2024, when forensic genetic genealogy identified Paul Nathaniel Hutchinson, a 55-year-old fisheries biologist from Dillon, Montana, as the man who raped and killed the 15-year-old girl at a Gallatin River fishing access site. Hutchinson died by suicide hours after being interviewed by investigators, and a post-mortem DNA test confirmed the match at a probability of 10.7 trillion to one.¹

What Happened on September 21, 1996

Danni Houchins left her home in Belgrade, Montana, around 11:00 a.m. and drove to the Cameron Bridge Fishing Access Site, a wooded, marshy stretch of the Gallatin River southwest of Bozeman.²³ When she did not come home, her mother, Sheryl Houchins, drove out looking for her and found Danni’s truck at the access site, unlocked and empty, with the keys and a water bottle lying on a nearby trail. Volunteers found Danni’s body at about 9:30 p.m., face down in a shallow pool in a swampy part of the site.

The autopsy, performed on September 23 by state medical examiner Gary Dale, listed drowning as the cause of death and the manner as “undetermined.”⁴ The findings underneath that ruling pointed elsewhere. Danni had muddy material in her stomach and airways, a recent vaginal laceration, and disturbed clothing: her bra was pushed above her breasts, the edge of her panties was rolled over, and her gold watch was pulled partway over her hand as if she had been dragged.³ A later review turned up bruises on the back of her neck consistent with her head being forcibly held down, and semen on her underwear.¹ The pool of water where she was found was about four inches deep. Danni was five feet five and 130 pounds.

Why the Case Stalled for Decades

Then-Gallatin County Sheriff Bill Slaughter publicly suggested Danni’s death might have been accidental. He told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle that the absence of visible cuts or bruises meant “I think we’ve got to be prepared for the fact that this may have been an accidental drowning.”⁴³¹

Former deputies said later that the department never treated the case as a homicide investigation. Keith Farquhar, a deputy at the time, said he “never felt like that was being pursued in the manner of, ‘somebody killed this girl, and we need to find them.'” He resigned three months after Danni’s death, in part over how the case was handled. Around 2006, detective Cindy Botek tried to reopen the case and reported being stonewalled by former investigators and pushed back on by leadership. She pointed to the mud in Danni’s stomach: “People drown all the time… What’s in their body? There’s water in their lungs. What did we find in Danielle? A stomach full of mud. That doesn’t happen in a drowning.”³

DNA from four rootless arm hairs found on Danni’s body was submitted to the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and returned no matches.⁵ Without a suspect, the file sat.

How the Case Was Reopened

Danni’s younger sister, Stephanie Mollet, never accepted the accidental-drowning story and spent years pressing for a fresh look.⁶ At her request, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office agreed to re-examine the evidence in 2020, and that review is when the family finally learned what the original autopsy had actually documented.⁷

When Sheriff Dan Springer took office in 2021, he made the case a priority. In March 2023 he deputized Tom Elfmont, a retired Los Angeles Police Department captain living in Bozeman, to lead the cold case work.³ Sgt. Court Depweg, a Newport Beach Police Department detective who specialized in DNA-driven homicide cases, was brought in to assist.⁸ In August 2023, based on the semen evidence and the full re-examination, Springer officially reclassified the manner of death from “undetermined” to homicide.

The Forensic Breakthrough

The four hairs collected in 1996 were rootless, meaning they lacked the follicular tissue that standard forensic DNA testing depends on. Standard techniques amplify specific markers from relatively intact DNA, and rootless hair contains only tiny, degraded fragments, often shorter than 75 base pairs.⁹

Investigators sent the evidence to Astrea Forensics, a California laboratory that had adapted methods from paleogenetics, the science used to recover DNA from ancient remains. Rather than target the standard CODIS markers, Astrea used whole genome sequencing to capture billions of ultrashort DNA fragments and convert them into a profile compatible with genealogy databases. From a single hair, they built a usable SNP profile.⁹¹⁰

That profile went to CeCe Moore, the chief genetic genealogist at Parabon NanoLabs. Moore used investigative genetic genealogy to build out a family tree, eventually converging on all four grandparents of a single individual: Paul Nathaniel Hutchinson.¹¹ Hutchinson was identified as a suspect by May 2024.¹

Who Paul Hutchinson Was

Hutchinson was 55 at the time he was identified. In September 1996 he was a graduate student at Montana State University in Bozeman, having moved there on July 1 of that year, and he held a work-study position with the Fish and Wildlife Service.¹ He went on to earn a degree in fisheries wildlife biology and spent 22 years as a fisheries biologist for the Montana Bureau of Land Management in Dillon.¹² He was married, had two adult children, and had no criminal record, not even a traffic violation.⁵

Investigators concluded that Hutchinson and Danni did not know each other and that the attack was a random “crime of opportunity.”¹³

The Interview and Hutchinson’s Death

By the time investigators approached Hutchinson, they had considered him a person of interest for about two months but did not yet have a confirmed DNA match or grounds for an arrest. They did not arrest him or read him his Miranda rights.¹⁴

On the evening of July 23, 2024, Elfmont and Depweg interviewed Hutchinson at his office in Dillon for nearly two hours. According to investigators, he sweated profusely, scratched his face, and chewed on his hand throughout. When shown a photograph of Danni, he slumped in his chair.¹² Bodycam footage later aired on 48 Hours captured him admitting he had trapped in the area where her body was found while denying any involvement in her death.¹

Investigators released Hutchinson after the interview and then observed him driving erratically, which they described as possible counter-surveillance. He went home and retrieved a .38-caliber derringer.¹⁴ At about 4:17 a.m. on July 24, he called the Beaverhead County Sheriff’s Office, said he needed help, and hung up. He was found shortly afterward on the side of a road west of Dillon, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.⁵

DNA Confirmation and Case Closure

After Hutchinson’s death, investigators collected his DNA and compared it against the 1996 evidence. The Montana state crime lab confirmed a match at a probability of 10.7 trillion to one.¹ Sheriff Springer said the result was “100% confirmation” that Hutchinson was responsible.³

On August 8, 2024, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office announced at a press conference that the 28-year-old case was solved.¹⁵ Because Hutchinson was dead, no charges were filed and there will be no trial. Stephanie Mollet spoke alongside Springer: “Even though this man will not face a jury of his peers, I have no doubt he was the one who forcefully and violently sexually assaulted my sister, then held her head down in a marsh until she choked to death on mud.”¹² Of the years she spent pushing for a real investigation, she said: “I was a child in 1996. It shouldn’t have taken my diligence and resolve to solve this case.”⁶
