Dannemora Prison Break: Inside Help, Manhunt, and Aftermath

The Dannemora prison break was the June 2015 escape of convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. The two cut their way out through the steel backs of adjoining cells, moved through catwalks and steam tunnels, and climbed out of a manhole in the village of Dannemora. A 23-day manhunt involving more than 1,100 officers followed. Matt was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent on June 26; Sweat was shot and captured by a state trooper on June 28, about a mile and a half from the Canadian border. A civilian tailor-shop supervisor and a corrections officer were later prosecuted for helping them.

Who Escaped

Richard Matt was 48 and serving 25 years to life for the 1997 kidnapping, torture, and dismemberment of William Rickerson, a 76-year-old Niagara County food broker who had once employed him. Parts of Rickerson’s remains were recovered from the Niagara River in early 1998.¹ Matt fled to Mexico after the killing, was convicted of killing another man outside a bar in Matamoros, and spent nine years in a Mexican prison before being extradited in 2007 and convicted of Rickerson’s murder in 2008.²

David Sweat was 34 and serving life without parole for the July 4, 2002 murder of Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Tarsia. Sweat and two accomplices had burglarized a Pennsylvania fireworks store when Tarsia encountered them at Grange Hall Park in Kirkwood, New York, as they moved stolen weapons between vehicles. Sweat shot the deputy with a stolen Glock and ran him over with his car; his cousin later used Tarsia’s own service weapon to shoot him in the face at point-blank range.³ Sweat pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in July 2003.⁴

How They Got Out

Guards discovered the escape at the 5:30 a.m. standing count on June 6, 2015, when they found two adjoining cells in Clinton’s honor block empty.⁵ Matt and Sweat had used power tools to cut through the steel at the backs of their cells, entered a six-story catwalk behind the cellblock wall, cut through tunnels and a large steam pipe, and pushed up through a manhole cover onto a village street. They left behind a note that read, “Have a nice day.”⁶

The route had taken roughly five weeks to prepare. Investigators later determined Sweat had spent as many as 85 nights working in the tunnels.⁷

The Inside Help

Joyce Mitchell

Joyce Mitchell supervised the prison’s tailor shop as a civilian employee. She admitted sexual encounters with Matt in the tailor shop and exchanged love notes with Sweat.⁸ She smuggled hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch, and a screwdriver bit into the facility by concealing them inside frozen hamburger meat, which was then carried to the inmates’ cells by a corrections officer.⁹

Mitchell had also agreed to serve as the getaway driver, meeting Matt and Sweat outside the prison at midnight with a car, cash, a GPS, camping gear, and a gun. The plan reportedly included killing her husband, Lyle Mitchell, whom Matt called “the glitch.” She didn’t show, later saying she checked herself into a hospital with a panic attack.¹⁰

Arrested on June 12, 2015, Mitchell pleaded guilty in September 2015 to promoting prison contraband in the first degree, a felony, and criminal facilitation in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor. She was sentenced to up to seven years and ordered to pay restitution. Prosecutors acknowledged the plea deal reflected in part the difficulty of proving the alleged conspiracy to murder her husband.⁹ She was released from Bedford Hills Correctional Facility on February 6, 2020, after serving less than five years, and remained under community supervision in Franklin County until June 2022.⁸

Gene Palmer

Gene Palmer, a veteran corrections officer, carried the hamburger meat containing the hidden hacksaw blades into the facility for Mitchell. He also brought a screwdriver and needle-nose pliers inside and allowed Matt access to a catwalk behind the cells, ostensibly to alter an electrical box for cooking. In exchange, he received paintings from Matt, which he later destroyed.¹¹ Palmer pleaded guilty in February 2016 to one felony count of providing tools to prisoners and two misdemeanor counts, was sentenced to six months in jail and fined $5,375, and served four months before being released for good behavior. He retired from the prison.¹²

The 23-Day Manhunt

The search became the largest manhunt in New York State history. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a $100,000 reward the day after the escape, and the U.S. Marshals Service added both men to its 15 Most Wanted list with a $25,000 bounty.⁶ At its peak, more than 1,100 officers from state police, corrections, federal agencies, state forest rangers, and Vermont police were on the ground. Costs ran more than $1 million a day; state police and corrections overtime for June and July 2015 came in $22 million above the same period a year earlier.¹³

For two weeks the fugitives left almost no trace. The break came on June 20. John Stockwell, a corrections officer at nearby Upstate Correctional Facility, drove up to a hunting cabin he leased on Black Cat Mountain, roughly 20 miles west of Clinton, and noticed a jug of water and a jar of peanut butter inside. He drew a handgun, shouted for whoever was in the cabin to come out, and watched at least one person flee out the back.¹⁴ DNA on items left behind matched both men. Major Charles Guess of the state police, the incident commander, later called Stockwell’s alert the “turning point for the entire investigation.”⁵

Richard Matt Shot and Killed

On June 26, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection tactical team heard coughing in a wooded area south of Malone, roughly 10 miles from the Canadian border. Officers tracked Matt into the trees and ordered him to put his hands up. When he did not comply, a Border Patrol agent fired, killing him at about 3:45 p.m. A 20-gauge shotgun was recovered nearby; Matt had not fired it.¹⁵¹⁶

David Sweat Shot and Captured

Two days later, on June 28, State Police Sergeant Jay Cook was on routine patrol near Constable, about a mile and a half from the Canadian border, when he saw a man walking through an alfalfa field along Coveytown Road at roughly 3:20 p.m. When the man pulled back his hood, Cook recognized Sweat. Sweat ran. Cook, a firearms instructor, fired two shots that struck Sweat in the shoulders, then held him at gunpoint until backup arrived. Sweat was unarmed. Cook said Sweat yelled after being shot that “he thought he was going to die” and “just wanted to be free.”¹⁷¹⁸

Sweat was taken to Albany Medical Center in critical condition and discharged on July 5, 2015, to Five Points Correctional Facility, where he was placed in solitary confinement on suicide watch.¹⁹²⁰²¹

What Went Wrong Inside the Prison

On June 6, 2016, exactly a year after the escape, New York State Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott released a 154-page report identifying “chronic complacency” and a “culture of carelessness” at Clinton as the root causes.⁷ Specific findings included:

More than 400 routine bed checks that should have taken place during the 85 nights Sweat worked in the tunnels were done negligently or not at all.
A March 21, 2015 search of Matt’s cell missed an 18½-by-14½-inch hole cut in the wall, and officers failed to run mandatory integrity checks on bars, floors, and vents.
Staff were not searched or screened at the front gate, which is how Mitchell got tools in. Inmates were permitted to walk around magnetometers meant to catch tools moving from workshops to the cell blocks.
Internal affairs never uncovered the sexual relationship between Matt and Mitchell, and supervision in the tailor shop was inadequate.

The inspector general said a number of employees had “committed criminal acts and violated DOCCS’ policies and procedures,” and that many had resigned or been terminated. Several Clinton staff refused to cooperate with investigators even after being granted immunity.²²

What Changed After

Within weeks, 12 Clinton employees were placed on paid administrative leave, including Superintendent Steven Racette, Deputy Superintendent for Security Stephen Brown, and First Deputy Superintendent Donald Quinn. State assistant commissioner James O’Gorman was brought in to oversee the facility.²³ Racette filed for retirement the day after being placed on leave, and 12 officers plus the superintendent filed retirement papers in the weeks that followed.²⁴

More than $500,000 was spent on technology upgrades at Clinton, including sensors in the catwalks. The manhole cover the inmates used was permanently cemented over. Officers received body-temperature devices to verify inmates were physically in their cells during counts, and new rules required items brought into the facility to be in clear bags and subject to inspection.²⁵ Statewide, DOCCS retrained staff on the prohibition of personal relationships with inmates, tightened pat-search requirements, restructured internal affairs, and replaced senior administrative personnel.⁷ Inspector General Lucy Lang noted in 2025 that prison staff are still not universally required to pass through metal detectors or body scanners daily.²⁶

The escape also produced allegations that officers beat inmates trying to extract information about the fugitives. By August 2015, 71 inmates had filed complaints with Prisoners Legal Services of New York. A June 2016 report by the Correctional Association of New York alleged a “culture of violence and abuse” at the facility that “escalated after” the escape. The guards’ union, NYSCOBA, called the report’s findings “biased and focused on baseless accusations.”²⁷²⁸

Where They Are Now

Matt is dead. Sweat, as of 2025, is held at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy, New York, in solitary confinement. He has been in solitary for roughly a decade and has been moved between nine different prisons since the escape.²⁹ Mitchell finished community supervision in June 2022.⁸ Palmer served four months and retired.¹² Sergeant Jay Cook, who shot and captured Sweat, received the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s Officer of the Month award and now serves as Franklin County Sheriff.¹⁷

The Showtime Series

The escape became the subject of Escape at Dannemora, a seven-part Showtime limited series directed by Ben Stiller that premiered on November 18, 2018, with Benicio del Toro as Matt, Paul Dano as Sweat, and Patricia Arquette as Mitchell. Stiller consulted the inspector general’s report and filmed partially on location at Clinton with Governor Cuomo’s support, and said he aimed to “show the reality of what happened.” The production drew 12 Emmy nominations, a Directors Guild award for Stiller, and a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for Arquette.³⁰³¹ Broome County Sheriff David Harder criticized the series, saying it brought “too much glory” to the man who murdered Deputy Tarsia.
