Darren Sharper: NFL Career, Crimes, and Sentencing

Darren Sharper is a former NFL safety who, after a 14-season playing career, became a convicted serial rapist who drugged and sexually assaulted women in Louisiana, California, Arizona, and Nevada between 2013 and 2014. He was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison in August 2016 and received a concurrent 20-year California sentence. In May 2026 he was transferred from federal prison to community confinement in Baltimore, with a projected release date of December 27, 2028.

The Football Career

Sharper was born on November 3, 1975, and played college football at William & Mary before the Green Bay Packers took him in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft with the 60th overall pick. He played for the Packers from 1997 to 2004, the Minnesota Vikings from 2005 to 2008, and the New Orleans Saints from 2009 to 2010, winning a Super Bowl with the Saints. Across 205 games he recorded 63 interceptions and 11 return touchdowns, earned five Pro Bowl selections and two First Team All-Pro honors, and was later named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-2000s Team.¹ After retiring, he worked as an analyst for NFL Network.

The Crimes

According to federal court records, Sharper and co-conspirators slipped controlled substances into women’s alcoholic drinks so they could sexually assault them. The drugs included Ambien, Xanax, Valium, and MDMA, which prosecutors said caused blackouts, memory loss, and an inability to make rational decisions.² Sharper called the mixture a “potion.” Formal charges involved nine victims across four states, though court records indicated as many as 16 women may have been assaulted.³

The earliest known allegation dates to March 2011, when two women reported an assault at Sharper’s Miami Beach condominium. Miami Beach police closed the case three days later as “miscellaneous/non criminal” and destroyed the rape kits.⁴

How He Kept Going

Sharper’s spree continued in part because separate police departments never compared notes. In September 2013, a woman in New Orleans reported an assault, and by November the state lab had confirmed a DNA match. Officials still declined to issue an arrest warrant, with internal communications citing the “high-profile” nature of the suspect.⁴ That same fall, victims in West Hollywood and Tempe reported assaults; investigators in none of these cities contacted their counterparts elsewhere.

A joint ProPublica and NPR investigation later found the New Orleans Sex Crimes Unit had already been cited by the Department of Justice for failing to investigate legitimate cases.⁵ Sharper was not arrested until January 17, 2014, when the LAPD picked him up after a January 14 assault in West Hollywood and another in Las Vegas the night after.⁴

Charges, Pleas, and Sentences

Charges piled up quickly once Sharper was in custody. California prosecutors charged him with drugging and raping two women he met at a West Hollywood bar. New Orleans police finally issued an arrest warrant in February 2014 on two counts of rape. An Arizona grand jury charged him in March 2014 with sexual assault and administering dangerous drugs. In December 2014, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana announced a six-count federal indictment for conspiring to distribute controlled substances with intent to commit rape, and the Orleans Parish District Attorney filed parallel state charges the same day. Nevada added two sexual assault charges in March 2015.⁴

NFL Network suspended Sharper without pay the day after his arrest and terminated him in late February 2014.⁶

In March 2015, Sharper entered a “global” plea deal intended to resolve all four states at once. He pleaded guilty to sexual assault and attempted sexual assault in Arizona and received a nine-year sentence.⁷ He pleaded guilty to one felony count of attempted sexual assault in Nevada.⁸ In California, he pleaded no contest to two counts of rape by use of a drug and four counts of furnishing a controlled substance.⁹ In Louisiana, he pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and drug distribution counts and entered a conditional plea to three counts of rape in state court.¹⁰

The original plea envisioned a nine-year federal sentence. U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo rejected it, saying it “doesn’t reflect the seriousness of his alleged crimes.”¹¹ Federal sentencing guidelines recommended roughly 15 to 20 years.¹² Sharper declined the option to withdraw his plea, and in March 2016 Milazzo accepted a revised agreement.

On August 18, 2016, Milazzo sentenced Sharper to 220 months in federal prison, or just over 18 years, plus three years of supervised release and a $20,000 fine.¹⁰⁹¹³ The Fifth Circuit dismissed his federal appeal in May 2017.¹⁴

The Co-Conspirators

Two Louisiana men were charged as federal co-conspirators. Brandon Licciardi, a former St. Bernard Parish sheriff’s deputy, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances with intent to commit rape, as well as state sex trafficking and forcible rape charges. He was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and lifetime sex offender registration. At his sentencing, Licciardi told a victim, “I made a terrible decision to leave you in the hands of a monster.”¹⁵ Erik Nunez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances with intent to commit sexual battery and received 10 years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and 15 years of sex offender registration.¹⁶ Sharper agreed to testify against them as part of his plea.

Civil Suits

Several victims sued Sharper. Alicia Lucchetti filed suit in Clark County, Nevada, in January 2016, alleging Sharper drugged, assaulted, and battered her in Las Vegas in January 2014, and sought damages for medical expenses, lost earnings, emotional distress, and punitive damages.¹⁷ Three other women who said Sharper drugged and assaulted them in January 2014 sued in December 2015 and reached a tentative settlement with him in June 2022; the financial terms were not disclosed.¹⁸

Where He Is Now

On May 27, 2026, the Bureau of Prisons transferred Sharper from a federal correctional institution near Elkton, Ohio, to community confinement overseen by its residential re-entry management office in Baltimore.¹⁹ Community confinement can mean a halfway house or home confinement, and the Bureau declined to specify Sharper’s placement, citing privacy and safety. Residents in such programs are generally required to find work and may be allowed to drive or use a cellphone for work.

The move followed an August 2025 ruling from Judge Milazzo denying a defense request for a sentence reduction. Sharper’s attorneys had argued he was a “model inmate” who had completed educational courses and needed treatment for potential chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The judge was not persuaded.¹⁹

His projected federal release date is December 27, 2028.²⁰ Once released, Sharper faces three years of federal supervised release, lifetime sex offender registration, a permanent ban on alcohol, and a prohibition on using the internet to contact women.
