How to Decide Between Documented Loss and Flat Payment
Most of these settlements offer two paths. Documented out-of-pocket losses pay more but require proof — receipts, bank statements, or records tying specific expenses to the breach. The flat alternative payment, sometimes called a pro rata cash payment, requires no documentation but is usually modest. The Comcast settlement estimates roughly $50 per person on that path, for example, and the actual amount depends on how many people file and how much is left after fees.11Telecom Data Settlement. AT&T Data Incident Settlement
One point worth checking before you skip filing: credit monitoring or identity restoration services included in these settlements are often automatic for class members and cost nothing. Even if a cash payment is not worth your time, enrolling in the monitoring usually is. Payments arrive only after a judge grants final approval and any appeals are resolved, which can take months or years from the claim deadline.
If you received a breach notification letter from any of the companies above, the mailing itself is often the simplest proof of class membership, and the claim site will typically ask for a notice ID or claim number printed on it. Keep the letter until payment arrives.
