Dave Navarro Lawsuit: The $10M Case, Farrell’s Countersuit, and Outcome

The lawsuit Dave Navarro filed against Perry Farrell sought at least $10 million in damages after Farrell punched him onstage during a Jane’s Addiction concert in Boston on September 13, 2024. Navarro was joined as a plaintiff by bandmates Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins, and the case, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on July 16, 2025, was settled and formally dismissed on December 22, 2025. The band announced its permanent breakup at the same time.¹

The Boston Punch That Started It

Jane’s Addiction was playing the Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston, well into a reunion tour with the band’s original lineup. During the eleventh song of the set, “Ocean Size,” Farrell walked over to Navarro and shoved him. Navarro backed away. Farrell then threw a punch that landed on Navarro’s upper body. Avery and crew members restrained Farrell and pulled him offstage, house lights came up, and the show was cut short.²³

The next show, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, was scrapped. Then the remaining 15 tour dates were called off entirely.⁴

What Navarro and the Bandmates Claimed

The complaint listed six causes of action: assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract. It alleged that Farrell threw a second punch at Navarro backstage after the show, connecting with the left side of his face.⁵

The three plaintiffs described Farrell’s conduct throughout the tour as ranging from “erratic to out-of-control.” They claimed he missed all seven pre-tour rehearsals, took the stage intoxicated, forgot lyrics to songs he had performed since the 1980s, and delivered rambling monologues while drinking wine onstage.⁶

The $10 Million Demand

The trio sought at least $10 million, tied to what the group lost when the tour was canceled and all band activities were suspended.⁷ They also asked Farrell to cover outstanding tour bills, including $240,000 in unpaid commissions to management and legal teams. Each member had been projected to earn $210,000 from the North American leg alone. The complaint added that the band could face liability to ADA, a Warner Music Group subsidiary, for failing to deliver a required 12 songs under a recording agreement.⁵

What Navarro Said He Personally Lost

Navarro had been sidelined since 2022 with long COVID and was collecting $25,000 a month from a disability insurance policy. He terminated those payments to rejoin the band, and the complaint said he likely would have continued receiving them for years. He spent months preparing with doctors, nutritionists, and therapists, and was still dealing with the effects of long COVID during the Boston show.⁵ He also postponed his wedding and lost $50,000 in vendor deposits.⁸

Farrell’s Countersuit

Farrell filed his own 30-page complaint the same day, in the same court. His wife, Etty Lau Farrell, and the band’s touring company, Wilton Hilton, Inc., were named as co-plaintiffs.⁹

Farrell alleged that his three bandmates had run a “years-long bullying campaign” against him, including deliberately playing their instruments at volumes so loud he couldn’t hear himself sing. That, he claimed, forced him to push his in-ear monitors to unsafe levels and caused significant hearing damage.⁷ On the Boston altercation itself, he acknowledged the body-check but said Navarro and Avery escalated things, alleging Navarro pressed a forearm into his neck and that Avery put him in a headlock and punched him in the kidneys and stomach.¹⁰ He also claimed Navarro charged at him and Etty backstage after the show while shouting expletives. The countersuit sought damages for assault and battery, intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, and breach of contract.

One of the sharpest allegations was that the other members had used his mental health as a “scapegoat” to justify collecting on tour cancellation insurance. Shortly after Boston, Navarro had posted a statement blaming the cancellation on Farrell’s “continuing pattern of behavior” and “mental health difficulties.” Farrell called those statements defamatory and said the final 15 dates were canceled without consulting or voting him, in violation of the bylaws of Wilton Hilton, Inc.⁷¹⁰

How the Case Ended

On December 17, 2025, all four members issued coordinated statements ending the fight and the band. Farrell posted a public apology on Instagram: “I’ve reflected on it and know I didn’t handle myself the way I should have. I apologize to our patrons and my bandmates for losing my temper and for disrupting the show.”¹

Navarro, Avery, and Perkins said they had “unilaterally determined it would be best to not continue the tour and made inaccurate statements about Perry’s mental health which we regret.” They added that the band had “come together one last time to resolve our differences, so that the legacy of Jane’s Addiction will remain the work the four of us created together.”¹¹

On December 22, 2025, the Los Angeles County Superior Court formally dismissed both lawsuits. The financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The members confirmed Jane’s Addiction would not reunite, closing their joint statement: “We now look forward to the future as we embark on our separate musical and creative endeavors.”¹¹²
